Mentally ill British man is to be executed on Tuesday. Please read.

Please read the whole story to this on the link below. Basically, this guy was caught smuggling drugs which were quite obviously planted on him by somebody else exploiting the fact that he has a mental health problem. He has bi-polar disorder and is delusional. He thought he was in China to become a pop star (which he is not) and has suffered from other delusions in the past. He has 5 kids. China has not allowed him to be assessed for mental health issues, which would mean a lighter sentence, so he faces death by firing squad at 10.30am on Tuesday.

The link provides details of how we can ask Gordon Brown to, once again, use his powers to plead for clemency here.

URGENT: Akmal Shaikh, a mentally ill British man is facing execution in China on 29 Dec. Act now http://bit.ly/4l9xMB

I would imagine that the PM has already spoken to the Chinese, I doubt he needs the public to tell him. That’s not to take anything away from what you are trying to do Anna.

The Chinese don’t have to listen to us if they don’t want to and there lies the problem. No matter what we do, China has it’s own backward way of operations.

He has written a letter but more influence is needed at this urgent time. Whether public influence works or not we need to put pressure on our government to help, after all it COULD help! It only takes a minute and could, or could not, save a man’s life. It could work. Please do not dismiss!
China is a member of the UN. Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The death penalty is a violation of two fundamental human rights, as laid down in Articles 3 and 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
the right to life, and
the right not to be tortured or subject to any cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment

We cannot sit back and do nothing! The government have secured clemency before for other Brits facing the death penalty so there is hope.

Sorry for getting all political, I don’t do it very often, but I feel very strongly about this.

Thanks to those who have signed the petition.

Of course he will have done, but there is a bit of a difference between saying “I’m Gordon Brown and I’d like you to do something” and saying “The British people are outraged and I have received several million requests to intervene”.

You say that China has always had it’s own way of doing things, of course it has - so has every nation, but they have gone through a major cultural revolution and there are many millions of young chinese people still quietly fighting for the same basic human rights that the western world take for granted. The Chinese have an appalling record, and if the British can’t be arsed to make their feelings known even when we are talking about the life of one of our own citizens then we are missing a valuable opportunity to, at the very least, embarrass the hell out of the Chinese government. The young people of China need this to be publicised and condemned just as much as we do.

I wouldn’t be in the least bit surprised if the Chinese have absolutely no intention of carrying out this execution - they are far more likely hoping for an opportunity to show how beneficient they are capable of being. I think they are just after the chance to be seen across the world to have made a humane decision, which will reap them far more political benefits for them than just quietly not executing a British citizen.

On top of all that I think you are misguided if you are prepared to put your faith in Gordon Brown. If you don’t make your opinions known then you have only yourself to blame when you don’t get what you want.

Maybe it’s a joke and they haven’t really shot him, that way they can appear beneficient and like they’ve got a sense of humour

I have to say as well, I wish the British government expressed such concern over every citizen unjustly in trouble with foreign countries…the name Gary McKinnon springs to mind

lol :D How brilliant would that be? Banzai!!!

Couldn’t agree more about Gary McKinnon. Perhaps if we were to launch a full scale nuclear assault on China then America might take us a bit more seriously?

Total joke that he was executed and what’s worse is that his family will not be able to take him home to bury him!

The Chinese are now stating that British criticism of the case will hurt our relations with them. No more plastic tatty shit for a while then.

I know I’ll be making some more enemies with this post…

17’000 kids die on an average day due to starvation, and I bet most countries where these children live in are members of the UN. And what do WE do?

I’m sorry for this bloke, but we live in a sick world - always have - and this fact will never change as long as humans live. We will never be part of a so-called better world as it will never exist.

And for Sam: politicians lie, always!

To be fair, I think we do quite a lot. Obviously not enough but all these celebs that promote these charities could get together and donate their own fucking money and the problem would be solved.

Also, capitalism thrives on the basis of keeping those African countries fucked.

LMAO :D

I don’t get it though - why on earth would they think that we wouldn’t publicly criticise them when we have been doing that for years over their appalling human rights record. We’ve never pretended it doesn’t matter have we? If someone tells me Tony Blair has been over there behind our backs telling them not to worry about it I am quite literally going to freak.

There are plenty of other cases that charities such as Amnesty and Reprieve fight for and these are on the websites if you are interested in getting involved.
As for all the other causes in the world, well we ain’t going to solve them. However, as Edmund Burke said
‘All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.’
We should do all we can so our grandchildren don’t look back in the same way as we look back at our recent history and think ‘why the fuck did they let them get away with that?’
Sermon over (!!!!!!!!!!!)
WIshing you all a fantastic new year!

Non excuse whatsoever for the death penalty but if he was as mentally ill as people claim he was , he shouldn’t have been travelling to the likes of China or Singapore where it’s common knowledge that drug traffickers do everything possible to get others to mule their stash through the customs because the penalties are so severe if you get caught.
