How influential is / was Therapy? ?

Something I wondered and thought would be an interesting thing to talk about on the boards. Though I like them I have the feeling they’ve maybe not been as influential despite always going their own way because they didn’t catch the big screens all the time? I don’t think being influential has been on their mind much either for the past 20 years. I may be mistaken though? Help? I certainly think they inspired riffs here and there because they’ve always been original with their riffs though, but not any bands I can name directly, though I’m prone to believe bands I don’t know of may have derived something from their style. I heard Andy say in an interview that they get their inspiration from listening to stuff you wouldn’t exactly think of directly when someone would ask you to make a guess.

Therapy? seem to me to be one of those bands that seem to exist in their own space - not hugely acknowledged in the media or by other bands but they keep plugging away and doing their own thing and fair play to them for that.

Anything fashionable is, by definition, bound to be unfashionable - so thank god Therapy? have never been fashionable!

I think you are right in a way - I love the style of their music and there are plenty of musicians out there who have admitted to liking them, but I have not really heard many where you could tell that they have been influenced by T? or use elements of their style in their music.

Have to admit though that I follow Metal more than the Alternative scene (maybe this is where you would find such bands).

No band out there quite like them…

they cross many genres and are truly original
perhaps they have inspired other bands to be original if nothing else?!?

Give it time when newer bands start breaking through and have T? as a major influence.

I’ve name dropped them in a novel i’ve been writing, which I’m currently waiting feedback from.

I think people will look back and take something from T? Be it the dark humour in their lyrics, their ‘do as you please’ attitude, the drum sound or whatever.
What smeghead said basically!

Yeah, that somehow sounds right when you put it that way and think about it. :D

I’m intrigued…what’s it about?

I’m not going to give away the whole plot just yet (though no doubt I’ll end up plugging the thing here, should it ever see the light of day), but I will mention that it involves two tattooists who first meet each other at a Therapy? in Aberystwyth and one of them has a Gemil tattoo on his neck.

I’m A HUGE T? fan, have been for a long time and they’ve certainly influenced my music especially Infernal Love, Babyteeth and Nurse. My band The Phoenix Prestige (based in China) is just about to release a CD and T?’s ghost can be felt throughout the record.
Have a listen to ‘The bullet catch’ (song 4) it borrows heavily from fyfe’s offsnare drumming techniques (teethgrinder). The feel of other songs such as ‘Antarctica’ (song 5) are heavily influenced by the atmospherics and sound effects found on Infernal Love.

well, i must say that i am directly influenced by therapy?. and i think at least one other member of my band would say the same.
i don’t know if it comes through in the music, maybe in some tiny bits and pieces here and there. on the lyrics side, we made two shameless nods to them. :-)
but even more than the music it’s their attitude that’s inspiring me every day.

when it comes to “only” the music, i’d say that t? signatures were always the “unusual” drumming and andy’s voice. that’s what i’ve heard non-musicians say at least. for me it’s also the sound of michael’s bass and the way it works together with andy’s guitar. and as much as i liked the music from the martin/graham-era, they lost a bit of that on the albums from that time. live it was still a blast (maybe even some of the best shows ever, during the suicide pact - tour).

so even though for me they are very influental on the musical side, i guess the really big influence they can have on other musicians is the way they tackle things. they’ve got attitude. still way more attitude than lots of the young bands. they do it for the right reasons and you can feel the difference to other bands. and also their approach to slightly changing with every new album, i think that’s great. it makes it harder for the mainstream-audience, but I wouldn’t have them any other way.

Yeah, we’d be better off if more people shared their attitude - but of course it’s great it makes them stand out at the same time.

Currently the attitude pressed on musicians by the media is really sad. Just lately I saw an article that titled (it was originally in Dutch) ‘Musicians shouldn’t make music. They should make internet.’

… which means as much as ‘they can get popular and famous way faster through internet’. But that’s not what it’s about when you make music for the reasons Andy mentions on the Scophobia gig. Just the fact someone can proclaim something like that in big letters and with a big picture of himself on it without being stoned (kind of) should be unbelievable, but it’s accepted as if someone said ‘tomorrow it’ll be raining in Scotland’.

Of course, I’m kinda saying this to people who already know it all I guess :D

On our new E.P ‘The Ivory Skull’ the theme and title track were inspired by an interview with Mr Cairns where he quotes a writer describing the mind as “existing inside an ivory skull”.

Also the lead at the end of the song is a tribute to the solo on Die laughing.

Bit of a shameless plug but have a listen for yourselves at http://thephoenixprestige.bandcamp.com/
