Apologies if there’s another thread for this.

I’m assuming that most of you good good people have seen it - good, bad or otherwise, do you think that it is suitable for a fairly robust 9 year-old to watch? He loved Wolverine, but hasn’t seen The Dark Knight (which was too violent) or Transformers 2 (which had a bit too much innuendo/fnar fnar moments, and was crap).

Thoughts? Am I being hideouls out of touch and over-protective here?

I had absolutely no interest in seeing this film what so ever having seen numerous trailers, but a friend dragged me along to the iMax in Cardiff on Saturday where we saw it in 3D - I was completely blown away to be honest.

The story/plot is pretty wank, and it’s your usual ‘good versus bad’ underlying plot with the typical love story element. I’d say a 9 year old would love it, although be warned it’s 163mins run time so hopefully your 9 year (son/daughter) would be mesmerised by the special effects and the stunning landscapes.

If you can, go and see it in 3D - as I say I was completely blown away by the visual effects and the fact the 3D really worked very well.

Fully agree with Auto-Surgery.
Storyline thin but great special effects in 3D ( saw it last Sunday ).
Not too good with heights and when your one flew down off that big tree riding that bird-yoke thing I actually got that feeling in my belly.

As for kids , most 9 year olds these days have seen worse and are used to playing the likes of Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 on the XboX they got from Santa. If they can monster that then this movie’s great and they will love it.

Yeah. Agreed. Old fashioned yarn with never seen before effects. Not only suitable for a nine year old, but a nine year old’s dream-movie in many ways.

don’t really get why EVERYONE goes on about how the story is clichéd, shallow, whatever. I think the story was okay, but the whole thing was too long and overblown.

the whole movie was solid, but the long production and the movie’s ultimate success blows everything out of proportion. this holds no candle to Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens and even Titanic. I really don’t want this to be the most successful of all time, dammit.

Thats why I can forgive him for shit like Titanic. I’ve not seen Avatar, sounds a load of old balls but I’d like to see the 3d stuff work.

I think we’ll (nephew, who’s 9 today) go see it on Sat (girlfriend is doing too many hours, and only other person that has shown interest is the pretty girl at wrk, so g/f would rather I didn’t go with her) . I’m suprised its done quite so well so fast but the ‘inflation adjusted’ figures show a different figure.

2nd films often do better than 1st ones, so expect Avatar 2 to top this one.

Saw Emmanuelle 4 in 3D about twenty years ago (or more) when you were still able to smoke in London cinemas. Soft porn and 3D do NOT work together…

Aliens is one my favs as well Gav. I take it you’ve heard about the prequel that Ridley Scott is doing?

“In July 2009, it was confirmed that Ridley Scott would be returning to direct an Alien prequel, with Jon Spaihts writing the script.[18][19]

In October 2009, Ridley Scott said that he was “looking forward” to directing the prequel, and that it was “kind of interesting”. He also briefly talked about the time period of the film, saying:

“It’s a brand new box of tricks. We know what the road map is, and the screenplay is now being put on paper. The prequel will be a while ago. It’s very difficult to put a year on Alien, but [for example] if Alien was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place thirty years prior.[20]”

In the UK the film is rated as a 12A which means that a child under twelve can see the film when accompanied by an adult. This of course means it is up to the responsible adult whether their child sees the film.

I am not a parent, but having noted the certification of the film, I was surprised by a couple of the expletives used - they weren’t essential to the dialogue and could have been replaced with “softer” words. Also, I am all for a lack of censorship, except when it comes to kids. I believe (to a small degree) it does influence the behaviour of kids. A 9 year old may well know the word “shit” from the playground, but seeing it on the silver screen can only enforce the use of that word upon them, and personally, I don’t think that is a good thing.

If you can cope with the expletives, then, absolutely, yes, do take your child to see the film! :)

Have you ever seen the directors cut of Alien 3? I think it is a much better version (some scenes are completely different).

I read that David Fincher became so sick of the studio’s over involvement that he no longer includes it on his bio, and washed his hands of it.

He informs me that he knows all the swear words although I suspect he’s wrong on that, but yes, certainly the minor ones aren’t new on him, but I’d agree with your point on reinforcement. My main worry though, is more the level of violence - he’s seen the likes of Spider-man, Pirates, Lords of the Rings and X-Men/Wolverine and loved them but hasn’t seen The Dark Knight, mainly because I thought both the violence (and I know the pencil scene was ‘off-screen’, but it was very strongly implied) and the unrelently dark tone (that’s a pretty bleak ending) should have justified a 15.

The violence in the film is pretty much what you would expect from a swashbuckling blockbluster / cartoon hero type thing. It’s certainly not disturbing, so he should be fine, I’d imagine.

Yeah, the alternative cut is not even technically the director’s cut. Definitely a much better version, though.

I have to put my hand up and say that I actually quite like AvP2. Not a patch on the originals, of course, but so much better than avP1.
Talking of which, I’m also really looking forward to the new AvP game (from the makers of the origanal game; it’s not based on the films at all).

His mum liked it, so no-one’s in trouble. I think he found it a bit intense and was a bit quiet afterwards but said he enjoyed it when he perked up later, and no bad dreams or anything later. I thought the big fight at the end went on a bit too long and there was a bit too much blatant suffering in it (compared to, say, Star Wars).

He did giggle at every ‘shit’ though

We had pizza afterwards - that’s a lot of cheese for one evening!

Low expectation was definitely a factor the first time I watched it. Mind you, after enjoying it the first time, I fully expected to hate it on a second viewing, so maybe expectations played a part there, too? Hehe.
Preordered the game today (for pc). :)

Mr Cameron really should of made T3 tho - cuz that WAS awful :(
And I have to agree with Divers on the movie-making point. I mean I watched ‘The Jerk’ the other day and that was a low budget Steve Martin comedy - and I still find that more entertaining (not to mention hilarious!) than this CGI poop they’re pumping these days.
Sounding like a old man now :D
