John Sicolo, Newports godfather of the underground passed way today

#

Started by Floyd

Many of you will have been to T? Shows in Newport TJ’s over the years so it’s with much sadness that I learned today that the owner John Sicolo passed away this morning. John was one of those people that you could meet once and he’d always remember you, I was lucky enough to have 15 years of good times thanks to John and TJ’s.
There are a few tribute pages on Facebook and BBC music have requested any memories you may have for a special tribute recording.

Sent a message to Rene earlier asking him to forward the news to the band. Like most of us who saw those incredibly early Therapy gigs at TJ’s John was an instant fan and looked forward to them returning just as much as anyone else. To say he helped put Newport on the map for those brilliant, if brief, moments way back in the day is an understatement to say the least. I grew up in TJ’s and saw him lose Trilby and thought he’d be indestructable after he came through that.

He’ll be missed and remembered by many.

its going to be strange going to tj’s and john not being around. alot of fond memories of tjs and john. impressive thing was he seemed to be at the venue no matter what, never been to a gig there that he hasnt shown his face at, and that is pretty fucking impressive. he always seemed to have quite a laid back and chilled out approach to alot of things and treated his customers as if they were friends or families, something i’ve never really seen at any venue of its size/status before and doubt i ever will again.

Everyone had a huge amount of respect for him and you knew you’d crossed the line if you got one of his legendary clips round the earhole! A very warm and funny man who will be greatly missed

Though I’ve never been to TJ’s, I’m shocked and saddned to hear of his gentleman’s passing, though he had been ill for some time and struggled to keep the venue going. I was aware that T? played there supporting Hole before I got into them (T?, that is) and have played there on their last UK tour.

If there’s something to keep this man’s memory alive and that’s to have fund raisers to keep TJ’s doors open, and perhaps I will make an overdue visit.

Alright Fatboy,

Yeah, Therapy played there a few times before the Hole gig (the famous one where Kurt turned up and John insisted he pay the £3 to get in) and loads of times since. There were things in the pipeline anyway to try and raise some cash before this happened and I believe they may still go ahead, if only to keep the club out of the hands of those who wouldn’t understand that sometimes it isn’t about making pots of dosh, it might just really and truthfully be about the music.

Keep your ears out and I’ll post anything that occurs on here and hope to see you there sometime in the near future.

Would be kinda fitting it’s one of the older Newport bands that see everything off it that’s what happens.

There is now a bit of bother regarding arsehole jobsworths in the council. It appears that because John is now dead his licensce is now invalid. Many people are trying many things, including asking our local politicians, to overlook certain conditions, which obviously they cannot. Turn up anyway and let’s see if we cannot get by this nonesense somehow. May be a dry gig though.

If the place doesn’t have a license to serve alcohol - can you not just take your own?

That is one possibilty yes and one that’s been suggested but there are a few people in office who couldn’t care less about the place so if they can find an infraction then they’ll shout it from the rooftops. I shall find out more today and post it here.

Seems a real shame - didn’t really know anything about the place until now, but it sounds like the guy loved what he did and loved the club.

There is too little of that about any more.

It will be a sad day when they turn it into a fucking Labatts Apollo, or worse - shut it down.

Yep, that’s what seems to be happening although Dean was sure it was in TJ’S. This is getting a tad confusing to say the least.

Don’t be, I was just around the corner and as I thought, it just wasn’t big enough for the numbers as mates were coming out drenched and they hadn’t even made it to the bar. Great gig though apparently, if you were in early :-)

That was some gig! Reminiscent of TJ’s sweatbox shows of old with the whole place going off! We were queueing by 7.30 and in by about 8.30 so we got a decent spot where it wasn’t too rammed. You missed a good one tonight hopefully I got some decent pics too :-)

Yeah, cheers Hooch, I posted a link to this on John’s tribute page on bookface. 5000 people joined this group in under a second or something along those amazing lines. I should have passed back messages from people grateful for Therapy’s thoughts but I know a few have emailed the band anyway.

Now that’s a nice touch, using the TJ’s backdrop. I’m amazed they managed to peel it off the wall mind the amount of beer that’s been soaked into it.
