Isis

I’m just listening to their new album Panopticon on repeat. It’s such an awesome piece of music. everyone into Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Aereogramme (I know that’s nearly only me here :) ), Oceansize or even Amplifier (am I the only one who finally appreciates them during this tour though they’re nothing compared to the other bands mentioned) should check them out.

Been wondering about Isis for a while, as a big fan of the Godspeed boys and their various side projects. I get the impression - rightly or wrongly - that Isis are rather heavier, though?

They are, an impression you mostly get through the heavy vocals. But the music is as airy and droning as it can be.
They could also be compared to Earth, an old instrumental band on Sub Pop (one of the guys gave the rifle to Kurt Cobain with which he left this place…).

Which Neurosis album do you recommend? The only song I’ve heard is “Locust Star” (which I loved), so I’m interested in anything similar to that! I just love that fuckin’ dense heavy crushing sound! :)

Not only have we just heard that a fourth album is in the process, but Aereogramme will also be teaming up with the brilliant Isis for an In The Fishtank session. These sessions are run by the Dutch label Konkurrent and will see the band recording over a couple of days to produce a record (which will no doubt have a cool fishy or some other aquatic feature on the cover). So will we get epic slow-burners juxtaposing Aaron Turner’s satanic growl and Craig’s angelic, soaring vocals? We will have to wait and see…

If you have a look at the Konkurrent site you’ll see that Isis and the ‘Gramme are going to stand in a line with such great bands as Sonic Youth, Tortoise, Motorpsycho, Nomeansno or Snuff.

I have Oceanic and Panopticon and they’re both really good but i think Oceanic might be a good starting point.

Still haven’t got around to getting any Isis albums, due to listening to Neurosis’ back catalogue constantly for the last 6 months or so… superb stuff!

Anyone interested in checking out Neurosis should go for;
Times of Grace, Eye of Every Storm, Sun That Never Sets - in that order, their last three albums as it happens.

Can anyone recommend the “Tribes Of Neurot” side-project/experiment stuff that they’re doing? Or the collaboration album with Jarboe? I’m interested in getting some of that stuff but have no idea really what to expect.

dissapointed too, but still, it kind of makes sense. that niche of postrock is slowly running out of ideas and possibilities to grow.
i mean, by now, there are so many bands out there trying to sound like ISIS.
and while i always enjoy those bands live, there’s often no point in bying a record cause they bring nothing new to the table.

Well, they did say they had done all they wanted to do, and I suppose that’s fair enough. But I thought the idea behind post-rock/metal was to be experimental, in which case there shouldn’t really be a limit to what new stuff you can do.

Minsk are a good example - loosely categorised in the post-metal genre, but very different from Isis and maybe even better.

I wonder if the Isis guys will start new bands…

So, as Isis have gone caputski and there seems to be a few fans on here, maybe now is a good time for everyone interested in Isis to list some similar (ish) bands that they also like, so maybe we can all find a couple of new ones to help fill the void :-)
So here’s some others that I listen to…

Most similar:
Bossk (only did 2 EPs, but a great UK post-metal band)
Irreversible (great EP Age and album Sins, then a crap album called Light)
Mouth of the Architect (gone a bit more metal on their last couple of releases, but their first two were in the post-metal mould)
Rosetta (Isis, if they were blasted into space)

Similar(ish):
Minsk - absolutely amazing, I can’t say enough about how great this band is. Tribal sounding, psychedelic post-metal.
Shrinebuilder
Zodiak
*Shels (not really the same, but they do have some similarities at times)
Ancestors
Crippled Black Phoenix (much more mellow)
The Ascent of Everest (also very mellow, post-rock-ish. Very different from Isis really, but whatever)
No Made Sense (more prog-metal than post-metal, but what’s in a genre)

more mellow:
jakob (from new zealand, toured with isis some year ago, instrumental)
mogwai (still great)
thrice (ok, they have a totally different background, but that last album “beggars” kind of went a little bit into the post-rock world, brilliant songs)
the butterfly effect (also from new zealand, a bit more “pop-ish” but not really, just great melodies)
kashmir (from denmark, they really are pop-ish, but in a good way, good songs)
the gathering (they should be legends!)

more metal:
kylesa (they play with two drummers, also laura pleasants kicks major ass)
and the classics: mastodon, neurosis
also been checking out baroness, torche and high on fire lately and quite like them all.

I was going to mention Mogwai, but forgot. I think a dude from Mogwai is also in Crippled Black Phoenix.

I know Kylesa, Mastodon, Baroness, Torche, High on Fire and Neurosis. Didn’t quite make the grade for me. I’ll check out some of those others you mentioned though, thanks :-)

You also reminded me of a few others - ones I don’t have albums by, but have been considering getting into:
Ganon (very Isisy - I dismissed them at the time as being a bit too similar, so not worth bothering with, but now I guess I might get their stuff - plus, I’ve only heard what’s on their MySpace, so a bit harsh to totally judge them from that. Definitely good musicians anyway.)
Intronaut

Crap… I had thought of a few, but in the seconds it took to type that I forgot some of them again :-S

Just checked out The Gathering, Butterfly Effect and Jakob. All pretty good, though none of them quite grabbed me. Not too keen on the vocals for The Butterfly Effect. If you’re into the mellower side of things, you might like The Ascent of Everest and Crippled Black Phoenix.
