Glyder? Bought their album after a gig in Clonmel a few months ago. Good band but a little heavy with the Thin Lizzy thing, I think.

Including the Republic makes this a lot easier.
Pretty much all I keep up with now are bands from Ireland! North and South.
The local underground scene has been churning out some great mucic over the last few years.

You’re right there. But it can be so underground and secretive, it’s hard to find at times. There’s a band from Clonmel (my own town) called ‘Thoughts of Ruin’ that I only just heard, even though they’ve been going about 5 years and both guitarists work for the same company I do. I was amazed when I heard the following song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yho5PZU5t5Y

Have to agree with you on both counts above, Alan.

‘Glyder’ are quality. I have the first 2 albums and last E.P.
New album on the way which should be deadly from the clips I’ve heard.

I picked up the ‘Thoughts Of Ruin’ album a good while back. Excellent melodic death metal.
Check out the LAST LIGHT album from Cork band ‘For Ruin’ also. Available free to download from “www.forruin.com”.
The songwriting, playing and production for both bands are fuckin’ ACE.

While we’re on the subject of Irish metal bands and RUINS…! Another Irish band I automatically think of when talking about TOR or FR is ‘Ground Of Ruin’. Much more in the death metal vein, but their last release was killer.

‘Overoth’ from the North are another killer death metal band with an album ready to go.
And sticking with the North, a promo copy of the new ‘Visceral Attack’ album, QUICK AND SEVERE, just landed on my desk from Mr. Posty.
Half way through it now. Excellent 80’s thrash homage. Done the right way.

‘I’ll Eat Your Face’ have there latest album available for free download also!
Excellent Grind with a slight jazzy twist. They plough through the tracks quicker than a dodgy curry does your hole.

I have plenty more local metal recommendations if anyone’s interested.

alabaster suns, ghost of a thousand, rolo tomassi, firebird, Hexes, mirimar disaster, shels, ramesses, abominable iron sloth, the longcut, working for a nuclear free city, 3 stages of pain, litmus, the subways, the rakes

looking forward to the new Glyder album saw them live a few years ago and was blown away…i think the lizzy comparisons are what makes them so good.
agree with the other posts on Electric wizard, the cult, leatherface and paradise lost.
Paradise lost new album is killer stuff.
add a few more- the mission, Gaye bykers on acid, cathedral. mogwai, teenage fanclub, cardiacs

New to swervedriver try Mezcal head or raise, best two albums by far.

Great to see ‘Glyder’ geting a good few mentions on here.

For fans of guitar driven hard rock/metal!
I can’t recommend Northern Ireland band ‘A Little Bitter’ enough.
Their whole second and latest album is available to listen to at “http://www.myspace.com/alittlebittermusic”.

And their 2 albums can be bought for a paltry £5 at “http://alittlebitter.bigcartel.com”.
Excellent music, production and playing all round. And the CD inlays are top notch too.
One of the few unsigned bands doing everything to a really high standard, all by themselves.

The tunes are catchy as hell and you’ll find yourself singing them to yourself for ages after. Always a good sign.
They are tight as fuck! and remind me a lot of T? in their ‘Troublegum/Infernal Love’ days.
Only a lot more focused on the hard rock and metal side of things. But that’s just my opinion.

Eureka Machines.

I think they’re really good, and they’re as independent as it gets, so check them out.
