Tony Blair - A Journey

#

Started by CS (Colin S)

Anyone else bought / considering about buying this book?
I bought it today as I’m extremely interrested some of the events which happened in the UK and further afield during Blair’s time in office, some of which he (and Bush) instigated.
I’ve only started reading the first chapter, but through reading the introduction, and some of the snippets that have been reported on BBC News, it doesn’t look like he holds back on some of the issues that he faced, such as Gordon Brown and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Some of you may hate him, for various reasons such as the two wars, although I actually quite liked the guy. Very charismatic and I feel that he kept Brown under control until he left. Interresting to read who politically different Tony and his dad were.

At my place, he is one of the most hated persons, along with his best mate, George W. Bush.

Cheers Tony & George for making peace with the rest of the world.

In a word, no; I wouldn’t even buy when its on sale at the local discount book shop in Swansea.

He went into No.10 with good intensions but he fucked that up, and don’t get me started on his pal Bush.

He did some good stuff like the minimum wage & abolishing fox hunting. His government also made the education and health system better (although not perfect by a long shot) than the tories had left it. It’s just a shame that he buddied up to Bush. Unfortunately, that’s going to be his legacy. Plus the guy is delusional. He said on Andrew Marr last night that the majority of Britons supported the war in Iraq.
Will I buy the book?
Will I smeg.

I understand his unpopularity re. the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Is that the biggest reason that people have such a hatred for him or are there other reasons?

Gotta agree with that! Most who enter the office have already corrupted their way there. The very few to manage to get to that high level without being ‘got at’, and have the best of intentions, soon get the fuck out of there or simply surrender their morals and play the game.

Case in point being George Lee in Ireland - top economist who worked for the national broadcaster for years. Last year to decided to join one of the leading political parties with the aim of shaking everything up for the better. He left after 6 months when he realised that nobody gave a fuck, not even his own party.

I imagine Blair was similar, but didn’t have the balls to quit and instead simply went along with it, selling his soul and now forever being remembered as a war collaborator (to Bush’s war monger).

The status quo will always exist.

Too true, reminds me of a great quote:

”It doesn’t matter who you vote for the government get in (and fuck your country up)” (Salv Alessi, S*M*A*S*H & (ex) Carter USM bassist)

Politics is the art of people and control, it’ll always attract wankers.

Surely being responsible for the deaths of over 100,000 innocent people has to be the biggest possible reason? But seeing as you ask the fact that he pretended to be part of the labour party and then suddenly turned into a Tory when he got into power and shat all over the people that voted for him didn’t help.

Civilian deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq have been reported to be somewhere in the region of 2,000,000

Watch it if you’re interested in politics but it’s nothing new, though. It made me shout stuff at the telly. They talk quite a lot about Iraq and then about Gordon Brown. It’s the same old Blair though; a mad grinning puppet.

I think Iraq and Afghanistan and his happiness to go against the UN and follow Bush are the main reasons. I also thought he fucked up the tuition fees business.

What worries me is who they will elect next to lead the Labour party. Another Tory-boy? Hope not, can’t cope with any more Condem as it is…

Absolultely no interest in giving any money to money-grabber Blair, there’s something really quite dislikable about him, possibly the way he let us all down, possibly just the way he’s chased every penny going since he stepped down. Am sure from a certain perspective the book will be interesing but I’d rather have a library copy (yes, I know he gets something from the PLR even then). Have you thoguht about just standing in Waterstones and reading it?

Loved Steve Bells’ IF strips about Blair, pure fuckin classic, i’ve got one that’s just one picture with Bush’s head open at the top with Tony popping out the top jack in the box style uttering the phrase: ”We have 45 minutes to save civillisation, don’t ask me how i know” . That sums Blair up for me. Totally worth checking the IF strips out if you can.

Apologies, missed a zero!! You’re right, it’s supposed to be 1.3 million in Iraq. It’s beyond belief when you think of the outrage at Maggie over about 1000 deaths in the Falklands, and that was legal and we knew what we were fighting for! I’m not defending her, but Tony should have learned a lesson from that.
