Local Music (For Local People)

#

Started by MisterHoppy

Been really enjoying my local music scene over the last few years and especially the last few weeks. So i wondered what local / unsigned bands the Wombles go and see / listen to. Hoping this will give me lots of new music to listen to that i wouldn’t have heard otherwise (Cheers for Firewater Hooch, they sound great).
So please post all your favourites (links would be nice).

Hey MisterHoppy, I’m from North Wales/Chester, and all there seems to be is either metal or indie bands doing the rounds (most of them not that good either, however my mates are in a cracking metal band called Apollyon who are on this month’s Metal Hammer))

We’re a bit more rock based, see what you think!

Well I’m not aware of there being an amazing amount of great local music in Canterbury but here are a couple of things that spring to mind:

This band is from neighbouring Deal. They’re called Cocos Lovers & I go to see them fairly often in Canters. Not sure what you’re into but I think their music’s lovely & their sound’s fairly unique. They seem to be doing pretty well; good reviews wherever they go, playing festivals. I’m hoping they’ll make it someday:

This band, Stone Thrower, have recently split much to my disappointment as I really enjoyed going to see them, thought I’d put the link up anyway though since the tracks are still good, in my humble opinion:

If I think of anything else I’ll post it.

Hmm, not sure if I’ve ever mentioned THE BLACKLISTERS before. Jesus Lizardesque action of uber joy. Can also highly recommend The Uprights, garage rock kinda feel which I like. This is my favourite video of theirs, recorded in the local Poverty Aid :D Erm, not really local to me as they’re French but unsigned so I’m still recommending Le Singe Blancwho I saw a while back… not sure how to explain them but if you like Mr Bungle you’d probably enjoy it :)

Well, just goes to show that there’s lots of great music out there even if the music execs think we should all be listening to Muse / N Dubz / Lady Gaga etc.
Havn’t managed to get through all the bands yet, but Cocos Lover are my favourite so far, beautiful sound (reminds me of Graceland by P Simon), it’s not surprising they’re getting good reviews, they deserve them (am going to point the people who do the world music festival in my town in their direction).
Sinocence i’ve been enjoying as well, and Carl Hellacious are great classic rock, keep that wheel rolling.
Hope everyone else has found something they enjoy here to. Here’s a few of mine.
The Otters : Fun sounds, fronted by Mark Astronaut (of the Astronauts funnily enough)
Latitudes : No vocals metal, massive sound.
Trippy Wicked : Rock Blues Sludge Doom, about pirates, beards, aliens, love and more.
Stu O’Connor : Modern Folk, sounds amazing.
The Mavis Krank : 3 Piece, no vocals noise, excellent, excellent, bloody excellent.
3 Daft Monkeys : OK, not local to me and no longer that small (BBC R2, support for Levellers, Hawkwind etc) but a great festival band (world music style, check out the song Faces).

Think that’ll do for now. Would love to hear from people outside of the UK (havn’t heard a belgian band since i was at the Ghent Festival 3 years ago).

Seeing as there’s a taste for metal out there thought i’d post these:

Aghast
Black Polaris
Imicus

Hope somebody enjoys em.

Cheers all who’ve posted, anybody got anything else they’d recommend?

Damm Concerto for Costantine are good, i don’t even like the vocals and i’m still loving it. Also been enjoying 20 Bulls Each, Kaplin, The Black Lights, The Uprights, Le Singe Blanc and Stonethrower. Still got to give the Minions and White Boys for Gay Jesus a proper listen, then go back and go through all the bands in the previous local band threads.

The Smoking Hearts : Thrash, and very good live.
Susie Ro & Ayla : Beautiful sounding, in complete contrast to The Smoking Hearts.

did anyone check out taint http://www.myspace.com/taintuk

only band i can think of from swansea that are any good, only time i’ve ever been near a gig of theres was at bulldog bash once my tent was right by the mainstage so i spent one morning sleeping whilst listening to them. i should go see them when they next gig locally(which is quite a rare thing), think the next one anywhere close is supporting sepultura in cardiff.

Been trying to work out who Concerto for Constantine remind me of all day, just realised it’s Muse, who i can’t stand, but it still sounds good to me (alright, not the vocals, be better without but i think that about a lot of stuff).

All right, despite thinking this is a pile of shite 20 seconds into Gang Ape Sex Tape by White Boys for Gay Jesus i rather like them (just finished listening to everything on their myspace for the 2nd time), bet they sound good live (and LOUD). Have they got any CDs out Hooch? (bet the cd inlay would be interesting)

Yeah, they did three EPs. White Boys for Brothel Med Clinics is ace, though WBF Black Lizzy does have Baby Needs Its Needle Changed on it, which is my favourite song. All cardboard sleeves though so no inlay to speak of. You can get all three for a tenner on the myspace should you be tempted :)

And yes, they are awesome live, though the last while I saw them at Milo’s they managed to cause two power cuts which kinda ruined their flow.
