Best MP3 Player?

#

Started by Bad Karma

Hi guys,

My old Phillips 8GB GoGear is about to bite the dust, the battery no matter how long I leave it charging only lasts an hour or so. So I was wondering if someone could reccommend me a new MP3 player, i’m looking for something with at least 8GB or more and a big enough screen to watch some videos.

I personally have an Archos 605 (160gb) - its got a 4.5 inch screen.

Its the biggest music player I could find. I have had my share of problems with it though. Its my second one (first one died after 18 months, total hard drive failure and Archos wouldn’t replace it, they wouldn’t transfer my licences for the video codecs that I purchased for my first one either).

Pros:
I can fit all my music on it and there is still probably 25% of the drive free
Vids are nice on it.
You can probably pick it up for about £100 - £120 (I paid £300+ for my first one :( )
Its not an apple, so no fucking iTunes

Cons:
It does crash quite a bit, actually quite a lot.
Archos expect you to shell out a further £20 for each plug in (That only unlock features already on the device)
After sales service is fucking shocking. Bunch of cunts the lot of em.

There are new devices out by them, I’m in two minds as to whether to ever buy their stuff again.

I don’t like the sound of purchasing licenses for the features already on an MP3 player but i’ll google Archos. I’ve had my Phillips MP3 player for nearly 3 years now and this is the first time i’ve had any real trouble with it.

For all MP3 players do you have to convert the files before you can watch them? Because I had to do that with my Phillips and the software that came with it was very slow.

Nah - I just drag and drop .avi, .mpeg, .divx straight onto it and it works 9/10 times (The other 1 time it needs the codec pack that I used to have)

The real pisser is that the codec pack is £19.99, €19.99 or $19.99 depending on where you live.

so if you are buying in pounds, you are well and truly bummed.

I’ve had a Creative Zen in the past - reliable little player, dont know what their recent models are like though,

I used to have a 40gig one, but last time I looked they didn’t seem to be doing any hard drive / high capacity models.

My mate has a Zen x-fi, which he says is pretty darn cool. His is 32 GB, but it has an SD slot on it too, which takes up to 16GB. I think they have a 64GB version now too. I think it does wifi too.

I currently have an 80GB iPod, no problems with it. I had a 40GB one before that. I’m waiting for something to come out with at least 96GB using flash memory rather than a hard drive (for longer battery life and less likely to break). If anyone knows of any such player on the market, let me know, but I don’t think any exist yet.

@Steve either as a personal stereo with headphones, or attached to a docking station to use like a home stereo.

Don’t really know enough to make recommends on models, but HMV were very good when my ipod screen went funny, and replaced it on the spot.

These are meant to be very good, I’ve always heard good things about Cowon, see a touch pricey on some models though

i’ve had a 32gig creative zen for a year now & it’s brilliant, you can add up to 32gig more via an sd card. before that i had a 2gig creative mp3 player which is still going now but too small for my needs. if you want something that has a great sound then creative is the way to go…and it’s not a bl**dy ipod!!!
if you spend an extra 20 quid on some decent creative in-ear earphones you’ll not be dissappointed

I haven’t seen any of the 32 GB Zen MP3 players on sale they must have stopped making them. Do you have to convert .AVI files when you want to play videos on it?

It’s a bit out of my price range because I have car insurance to pay this month but i’m tempted by the option to add another 32GB with a memory card.

Are you in Ireland or the UK? cause I saw a post on hotukdeals.com that said Currys were getting rid of a load of archos 5’s for cheap, cheap! some of those have 500gb storage!

Might be worth giving em a bell first. Quite a lot of the time these deals can be local to a handfull of stores - I couldn’t be arsed reading through all the comments to see if it was nationwide, but give em a tinkle before you do a 40 mile round trip ;)
