HA lyrics

#

Started by mooneycult

so i think most people agree that the album rocks (and how!)
so what do people think of the lyrics on the album?

personaly i was a bit dissapointed at times (as i was with shameless), not that they are bad but i feel that andy/the band could have pushed it harder sometimes. like on not in any name, starts out with a great line “my grandfather was cannonfodder”, but then just ends up going nowhere really. i was hoping for more god kicks style lyrical genius.

also rust and stand in line might have had a bit more to them, i guess its just hard to beat semi-detached and suicide pact for great lyrics!

Personally I’d go back even further, ie Nurse etc, maybe I’m just an old fart though…:)

Lyrically I think it’s the weakest album in terms of saying something maaaaaaaaaaaaaan, but I don’t think the music suffers from the lack of poetry, plus it’ll be easier to remember all the words.

it’s a different styled album in many respects and just coz Andy hasn’t put such an obvious message in doesnt mean the lyrics aren’t good… I think there’s some great lines in this album.

i never said there wasn’t great lines on the album, my fav being: “its a festering fucked up sign of the times when they look at the teeth but not at the eyes”.

i’m not looking for “wooah dude, that really spoke to my angst ridden heart” style messages, just MORE lyrics would have been enough on certain songs. they proved on songs like “if i kills me” and “who knows” that just because its a 2 and a half min up tempo punk song doesn’t mean that the lyrics can’t be great.

I may be getting the wrong end of the stick, but the sentiment on ” if it kills me “…

“If i just do one thing with my life. i’ll find the truth for you tonight.if it kills me…”

Either that’s a really nice sentiment or its really sarcastic and not meant in that way at all…

But the way ” If it kills me ” comes in with those chords and that vocal melody is superb anyhow…

Anybody know what ” the truth ” is that Andy wishes to find out ?

Assumed that IIKM is, at least, not as sarcastic as, say, Stories, quite liked that line.

The thing with the lyrics that gets me is that they can make an album sound more cohesive (which certainly worked on Troublegum), rather than ‘here’s 12 songs we did, in no real order’. That said, Shameless did have some abyssmal lyrics (can you guess which particular song I have in mind?), so the brevity here is at least, an improvement on that.

i don’t really see any sarcasm in if it kills me, if anything andy seems to be trying his best to be sincere!

the lyrical style on HA is quite similar to shameless IMO, stalk and slash could have been on HA (great song, shite lyrics). but at least there’s no “welcome to fuckland” on HA!

IMO the lyrics on Stand In Line are exactly what the song needs to put across its mood. This is my favourite track on HA, partly because of the lyrics!

For me it’s ‘Who knows’, love lyrics like

Yeah, I’d have to agree with that.

Agreed. I also hated that line.
My favourite lyrics are on Semi-Detached and Troublegum. Infernal Love & Suicide Pact were good, too.

HA doesn’t impress me much.

Yeah, I think its the best tune on the album… that really kinda laid back lead guitar bit in the chorus is amazing :)

Title: [HA] Love it, but…

I’ve been listening to HA for about two weeks now and I realy love it. But there’s something missing… I love the music, totally do.

But the lyrics… I miss that typicall creative, almost poetic, use of words. Or is it just me? I’m afraid that I’m gonna have enough of this album sooner than it deserves :(

well I started a thread about HA lyrics the other week, would agree that on certain songs there is something missing, not that there isn’t plenty of great lyrics on offer also.

certain things like the repeating of verses I find a bit lazy too.

overall I think in the next few weeks we’ll realise whether t? have delivered another classic or whether the album will be turned upon in the same way shameless was.

I have to agree, the lyrics on High Anxiety aren’t the best Andy ever wrote but there still are some highlights (“my grandfather was canonfudder” for instance).

I also noticed that I’m starting to get a little tired of HA by now. Usually I can listen to T? albums for years and still enjy them like it was the first time.

Just stop listening to it for a week and then try it again!

I did so, and it still sounds great.

Concerning the lyrics: Well, I´m not very impressed by them, but there are still some good, clever lines!

 Oops, I didn’t see it.

Sometimes the lyrics seem like Quick & Dirty B-Sides, but on other moments they’re okay, but not impressive… not yet anyway…

At one point it almost felt like it wasn’t a Therapy? album or maybe like we went back into time and this was the successor to Troublegum.

The albums following Troublegum are a significant contribution to the sound of the band and sometimes it feels like that is gone or hard to find…

The music is great and I think the singing is better than the last 2 albums. I’m not sure, it’s just that Therapy? signature that I seem to miss here…

I felt the lyrics had a different feel as well. They dont seem as dark and twisted as usual, but on some songs they are very good or even amusing ‘Hey Satan - You Rock’ being a prime example of a funny song. However, i do feel Andy has probably out grown some of those more angsty type lyrics of the troublegum and infernal love era.

On the subject of repeating coruses etc this seems to be something that is quite in vogue at the minute, with the Wildhearts doing it on their ‘Riff After Motherfucking Riff’ mini-album.

Shame rerally cos the lyrics were one of the hihglights of both bands.

HA is a great album. The first time I played it in my discman when leaving the recordstore I had this “Why did I buy this piece of crap, the guys are almost dead anyway”-feeling:eek:, but now I love it. I agree on the lyric-issue, but what the hell. As a dane I normally don’t listen to the lyrics as words but more as a part of the melody.
