Memorable Journeys

Started by chr1s (I can't remember my own name)

Inspired by the talk in a travel thread I saw on another forum, I thought I would open up a post for any journeys of note, be they good or bad, that you may have made.

I’ll need to have a good think before i add mine tho!!! :)

never ever ever get on the intercountry European train between Czech Republic and Hungary without booking a seat. If you do, expect to spend 6 1/2 hours either a) stood up, b) sat in some angry German’s seat or c) sat outside the bog.

Once when I went to Canada, it took 3 days due to heavy snow - had to spend 2 nights in airport hotels (which I never got any compensation for!)

I’ve travelled from Prague to Budapest on train before… we did have a seat booked tho.

The most memorable journey I’ve made was honeymoon in California - drove from San Francisco to LA over a two week period, stopping off for a few nights at Big Sur and Santa Barbara on the way. Amazing.

Leaving Belfast for uni in september 2009.

Travelled on the Belfast - Birkenhead boat (8 HOURS OF HELL) with my dad, then stayed at my gran’s before heading down to Preston where I haven’t really looked back since.

Loved travelling to South Africa too - Cape Town is beautiful.

Spending 3 weeks driving through North and South Islands in New Zealand - amazing scenery, lots of vineyards, funky wee pubs in the middle of nowhere, lovely grub, odd attempts at ‘supermarkets’ and sheep…everywhere lol

My mum and dad were caught out by that ash cloud thing last year when they were staying in Naples. They ended up having to get a bus from Naples to Calais (1000 miles), a boat from Calais to Dover, bus from Dover to London, bus from London to Stranraer (400 miles), boat from Stranraer to Belfast, then my Dad had to get a bus from Belfast to Dublin (100 miles) to pick his car up and drive back to Belfast (they’d originally flown out of Dublin). They’re in their 60s as well. Nightmare!

Bloody hell!! Reminds me of when I was about 15 or so and we went to Yugoslavia (think the place we went is now Croatia) by coach. Took 2 and a half days travelling through France, Switzerland and Italy on the way. The journey home took a bit longer cos we had to spend around 8 hrs in Italy until a replacement coach could be sent to us after a breakdown.

Been in South Africa numerous times and the stuff that goes on in that country is unreal. It’s pretty lawless to say the least.
Crashed a quad bike over a cliff there once , luckily escaped with only minor injuries.

Other time I was in a bar near Stellenbosch where a bloke in his mid 20s , very scruffy looking and absolutely hammered was chatting up some girls in my company that he was a pilot.
I didn’t quite believe him ( who would ) so we bet on it…
Next morning he’s at my door and an hour later we’re flying over the vineyards in a Cessna.
The joker than says he wants to sleep off his hangover for a bit and before I know it I have the steering rod in my hand and he’s pretending to be sleeping. The jammy bastard , I was bricking it.

Got over to Mauritius as well and had the scariest ever insect flying in my hotel room.
It was huge , looked very weird , it was fluorescent and stuck to windows with some sort of sucker things on the end of his legs that you normally only see on an octopus.
Had to get the missus off the beach and catch it before I dared to go in the room again.

on holiday ,on the island of poros, rather than spend the last day of the holiday mopin around dreading going back to work in a dirty sheet metal shop in birkenhead ,me and the wife decided to book a day trip to athens on a hydrofoil ,the trip included a look around plaka market ,a lazer and light show at the acropolis, followed by a four course meal at a taverna and then taken to athens airport in time for our flight ,the whole day had been wonderful until we left the taverna to board one of the two buses to the airport, where to our horror and that of the courier, we found out from a cop that while we were in the taverna the two bus drivers had engaged in a massive street fight and had been taken away and locked up ,so there were around a 100 people stranded on the streets of athens with little or no cash, luggage and passports in the hold of the coach and our flight due to leave in 90 mins ,reluctantly the cops took pity on us and let the drivers(who were very bloodied) out just to take us to the airport (with police escort)
