Should Andy play more solos?

#

Should he?

I’m hoping Andy will do his best to push himself to his limit on the next album, if that includes playing more solos, I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to T?’s music but it would be cool for a change.

Some of the best T? guitar playing (imo) can be found on Suicide Pact - You First and I wouldn’t mind if that returned (like the intro to Jam Jar Jail). I’m wondering if that was Martin’s doing though; he also seemed to be doing most of the work on the live DVD.

But (!) I have faith in Andy. He can kick serious can when he’s in his day.

Thoughts? : )

If it’s functional and adds something to the album surely.
Not if it’s just for the sake of showing he has the ability. Leave that to other bands.

Ha, great question! I love andy’s solos! Die Laughing, 6 Mile Water, Knives, Stories, Loose are excellent. I even love the way he can’t do Page Hamiltons solo on Unbeliever properly and just makes up a load of noise. I think his solos are always really interesting, rather than doing traditional kirk hammett style blues wah pentatonic flurries he is more noisy and off the wall.

The odd solo would be good to brighten it up a bit (look at st anger with no solos - really one dimensional and drab) but what T? do best is those big melodic mid sections like on Dead. More of that please! sorry to waffle on but im in a good mood today : )

Lol, these replies made me laugh, starting up this thread was already worthwhile xD

I agree, the melodic parts are indeed the best thing they do along with their monstrous riffs.

A solo should fit the song and not be overly ‘notey’ or widdly just to show off.

I very rarely like overly long twiddly solos.

An exception is the guitar solo from As I Am by Dream Theater just because it is actually awesome and goes with the music.

Yeah solo’s should fit in, I do think there’s a good deal of guitarists out there who can make that happen. Tears Of The World by Uriah Heep would be an example.

Andy brings many great things to Therapy?, but a knack with a great guitar solo is not one of them - and I think he’d be the first to admit that, no?

Even as a guitar geek myself, I don’t miss guitar solos from Therapy? - the music doesn’t need them, there’s more interesting stuff going on between the vocal parts anyway.

Besides, if they wanna play these new songs live we all now how shit a solo sounds in a three piece environment with only bass to back it up.

To be fair - they are one of the few 3 pieces that can get away with it - Michael uses a good amount of distortion on the bass and him and Neil are tight as fuck as far as rhythm sections go.

I think thats why crooked timber works so well - cause the guitar can go off and do something a little different… if that makes sense?

Yeah i know what you mean Gav, as it stands it works fine, but by asking yer man to start going off on longer solos i think its going to make the live interpretations suffer.

aye and no. I’m more in favour of interesting melodic guitar workings - like the harmonies played with the chords in Opal Mantra. To be honest, Andy kicks ass…aye, he’s no a kirk / slash kinda guy, but, hey, do we no just love him the way he is? rock on andy!

Andys solos are like a soundtrack to a mental patient’s brain.
I think it will show something if he made a song starting with some random solo.
But did he do that with “Nowhere”, or would you say thats more of a riff than some sort of solo/lead guitar work…??? Hmm.

Exactly - his solo’s are interesting to say the least : ) And when he’s in his day, he CAN kick ass. Like that one time at Crammerock (beste time ever seeing T? for me), the solo on the alternative version of Diane (and another I can’t recall) just rocked the way he played it (gotta admit they totally exceeded themselves on that day though). I just think it’d be an interesting if he did even if just like 2 solo’s on the new album (doesn’t have to be a longer one or in a different other-guitarist-something-we’ve-already-heard style, just Andy-style ^^) it would be an interesting ‘innovation’ and would add to a live performance.

Does the feedbacky bit in the new album video count as a solo of some sort then? It’d be cool to see him mess about with that live.
