The bass is well up in the mix on both albums for one thing, and Michael uses a vaguely ‘dubby’ style on both, like on Deep Sleep/Exiles. Also Neil’s 2nd snare (or whicher drum it is) is very prominent as was Fyffe’s on Nurse, in fact there is a slight similarity between the drum parts of Teethgrinder and Clowns Galore in my mind. I think the main similarity between the two albums is they both use ‘space’ almost as another instrument, there is a big emptiness running through or behind a lot of the songs, if that makes any sense, and the guitar is often quite sparse. Though I think in the case of Nurse, it was partly because they were trying to avoid sounding like a grunge band, and in the case of Crooked Timber, Andy had been reading a lot of Beckett!
