Can’t Stop The ROCK

#

Started by Epitome (Dave)

There always seemed to be a consensus that as people get older they mellow out. That heavy rock music is for angsty teenagers. I’m 30 now and I still rock pretty hard. When I was a teenager 99% of what I listened to was punk, metal or “alternative rock” and I admit my musical horizons have broadened a lot since then… but I still listen to most of those same punk and metal bands that I did back then, plus a bunch more, some of which are possibly even heavier/faster than what I listened to back then.

I don’t know exactly where I was going with this topic, but there it is… You can’t stop the ROCK!

I still listen to heavy music (am 33) and don’t seem myself stopping anytime soon. I do however also appreciate a lot of rock music from the 70s - wont’ catch me watching X-Factor anytime soon. Pop music has gone to shit.

I used to only listen to rock punk up until I was 17 or so, then got really into dance music (got involved with techno & drum and bass free party soundsystems) for quite a few years, now I listen to a whole mixture of stuff but a lot is still guitar based (and fairly heavy) - nomeansno, T?, 20 Bulls Each, Mogwai, Trippy Wicked, Latitudes etc. That and lots of Dub/Reggae. Must admit a lot of the local bands I see who are into the metal end of things are fairly shit sadly.

Yes! While I like seeing people of around / below my age at gigs because it’s good for the future of rock / the bands themselves I have great respect for ‘older people’ I see around as well because those who listen to stuff or don’t hang on to their ‘style’ are quite often people who just got into something for reasons other than the music itself, imo and if you’re still rocking at a later age it kinda proves you’re not like that because I believe ‘your style’ matters less to yourself as well as your peers as you grow up.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I think a lot of the younger crowd who listen to heavy music do so because they like the scene rather than the music itself, and that is why they abandon it as they get into their mid-20s. It’s people like us who really loved the music all along who stick with it :-)

when your an old bastard like me you realise fads and fashions dont mean a fuck ,older fans are harder to please because theyv seen it all before ,and therefor appreciate raw talent and hard graft when they see it ,bands like THERAPY?

My musical tastes have definitely changed over the years, despite the fact that stuff that roughly falls under Rock accounts for about 50% of my listening I’ve bought 8 records over the last 2 days and only 10cc are guitar based, 2 classical, 1 Hip Hop, 2 Soundtracks and 2 electronic / beats / breaks.

Big fan of the 80s thrash bands and still play them a lot , even though I class as someone in his 40s now.

Having said that , you can’t beat a bit of jazz over a spliff and a bottle of Pinot Noir either.
