Piracy

It really is a plague. It seems to me the bigger bands are still able to pull through but it really makes it hard for smaller bands to survive. Example:

Recently Dushan Petrossi, the songwriter of one of my favourite bands Iron Mask published this on his Facebook:

‘With a heavy heart, I’m forced to sell a few of my guitars, interested guitarists; mail me here. How the f. can we stop those illegal downloadings and all this internet free sharings? You won’t get any music soon, at least not from me…’

I’m pretty sure he’s not alone, this is bad for music in general if artists can’t survive if they don’t go mainstream. I’m not saying they should all be rich be but a guy who is quite widely praised for his guitar-playing skills should at least be able to get by with his music… I think it’s pretty sad.

Yeah, piracy is a problem. Once an artist is rich, I don’t have any sympathy for them, but I think when people are ripping off small, independent musicians they’re either total c*nts or just too stupid to realise what they’re doing.

I think it is just plain stupidity and greed.

There are plenty of ways of hearing music by new bands online, but if you like it, buy an original copy and help them on their way.

Music piracy is a weird thing, people were copying tapes years ago but the real issues seem to have arisen with the internet - without which many bands wouldn’t have got as much popularity as they have, I’ve heard bands on the net (myspace before it went to shit, soundcloud etc) and as a result bought music and gig tickets, so it’s a bit of a double edged sword. This is the first I’ve heard of someone who isn’t either a mainstream and already well off artist or a record company exec / spokesperson complain about lost revenue from piracy for several years, smaller bands / artists have just done what smaller bands allways did to earn a living and toured relentlessly, not to sure many musicians who weren’t massive ever made a lot of money through record sales. But is it all just downloading? Who has never had a copied cd from a friend? And if that means the band gets listened to and means future revenue through a new fan who wouldn’t have got into the band without it is that a gain or a loss? Complicated issue, although just downloading every album you want because you can and don’t have to pay for it is the mark of a bawbag. Personally I like to buy vinyl or a cd if that’s the only option as if I’m paying for something I want something I can hold, but when I’m in the kitchen I’ll just use Bandcamp or Soundcloud and stream music through my laptop, all legal and I’ve heard lots of good new music that way.

In my experience the people who only download generally have a few songs of many bands but few bands they have a lot of music of or listen to a lot, and are also not the kind of persons that go to anything but the bigger festivals (where smaller bands won’t play). I think this explains itself both ways; if you’re not ready to spend money on music you’re probably not that serious about it, and the other way around…

I could be wrong, but aren’t good album sales also a bit of a requirement for getting (good) spots at bigger festivals?

@MisterHoppy - I agree about it working both ways. When I was a teenager my main source of hearing new music was Napster (I’d search for a band I already liked, then look what else those people had and download some of it to try it out). I’m a big music lover, so this worked well for those bands as I then went out and bought the CDs - I have hundreds of albums that I’m sure I wouldn’t have even heard of if it wasn’t for Napster.

It’s a shame that some people (I don’t know if it really is a large amount or whether that’s just what record companies want us to believe) are happily just ripping off musicians that they like. I also can’t understand the mentality of just downloading a few songs by a band either though, so they clearly have a very different view on music than I do.

I do listen and occasionally download music from the internet, but while it may be technically piracy, I think it’s the attitude or the purpose of the people who are downloading. For me I use the internet in place of the radio or MTV (both of which seem shit these days) to find new music and then go out and buy what I like on cd. I still buy a couple of cds a month (not as much as I used to, but I now have more mouths to feed) It’s probably my age though, if I were younger it’d be just a fact of life that you search for and download music for free. The worst I heard was two employees in HMV discussing a new release that they had in their hands and one telling the other how good the album was and where he could download it for free.

I think a lot of major labels have more piracy problems than smaller ones, but they caused a lot of the problems themselves, they loved it when CDs came out as they cost fuck all to produce and the labels were selling them for £15+ in a lot of cases and their attitude to this was screw you all as there isn’t any alternative for you, now there’s an alternative people haven’t forgotten that attitude. Also the fact is that the only people who really made a lot of money from music sales were the labels and maybe the top 5% of artists, that revenue stream is gone, the labels have dug their heels in and refused to recognise this and change and all they seem to do in response to the changing music marketplace is bleat about piracy. Fuck em, they’ve not bothered trying to find and nurture decent musicians and opted to go with the x-factor style instant stars, if all you’ve got to sell is shite you’re income is going to end up being shite. Also many bands now sell their music (dgitally) direct via services like bandcamp, and using small labels to handle cd / vinyl release, or set up their own label and go down that road, and that’s a good model for the music industry - there’s plenty of great music out there, and a band doesn’t have to be picked up by a major label in order to be noticed nowadays which is a good thing.

The only problem nowadays is with MySpace (or Facebook if you must) and other sites for streaming music, there are so many bands out there that music fans are going to be spread out a lot more. Not saying that it’s a bad thing, but I would expect there to be much fewer HUGE bands in future but lots more bands with a small group of followers.

Yep, what he said. Piracy won’t go away EVER. Get used to it. Bands are making up their money by charging more for a gig ticket instead and giving away the albums. Thats where its going to go so bands had better be F%^KING AWESOME at what they do!! Hopefully it will rid the world of mediocre music but i doubt it. I think the world will fill with music sold to us by the tastemakers more and more and real music will eventually die. Rock will be ruled by bands like My Passion and other soulless, personailty-less shit and in 12 years someone good will come along blow them all away and it will all be rediscovered again like they did with punk! have faith - it will all come back!! Dont let yourselves get disheartened just because the rock world is currently awful and the only bands selling records in England right now are Foo Fighters, Muse, and Bullet For My Valentine. Like i said - shit ha ha!
