Fucking awesome story!

I know where you’re coming from. I used to do work experience in McDonalds and it was the pits. Hated every moment of it and had to do it because of the college course I was doing at the time. Now on the subject of that college course, I wished I had dropped out and done a YTS instead, but like most who go/went down that route, you end/ed up on the dole anyway.
But on the subject of voluntry work, I’d say go for it. I was with the Citizens Advice Bureau for a while and chairty work doesn’t mean work in a charity shop either (not that I have anything against charity shops, I must add).

I agree. I worked in the CAB for a couple of years when Hooch started nursery school and it was great. You get loads of really good training, it benefits you in that you learn about your own rights and responsibilities, the work is ridiculously diverse and gives you tons of skills which employers really value, and also voluntary work looks great on your cv. I only left because I was expecting a new addition to the Lobster family :) My partner volunteered there a couple of years after I did and he got a paid job out of it, and he’s been in paid work in the voluntary sector ever since. Go for it! :)

when i was 15, 2 weeks before my 16th birthday, i worked in a chippy in Bangor on saturdays for 2 weeks, all i did from 11-6 was washing dishes, i hated it, it was packed and never got any help, i was struggling like hell, there were quite a few staff i didnt get on with and a few i did get on with, so at the end of my final shift everyone was closing up, and so i made a joke to someone and they took it seriously. so 2 days later i got a call from the manager, who is a complete bitch by the way, accused me of calling a colleague an arsehole, i said smart-arse as a joke, so she’s sacked me and i was gobsmacked, im glad i didnt have to do that job anymore, in a way its a compliment.

I worked in a cafe/chip shop myself, nearly 18 years ago. The job was simple enough, getting the black bits out of potatos and put them through this cutter for chips. Lasted about two weeks if I remember rightly, the owners were up there own arses. Thankfully a newsagent that I was doing a morning paper round for asked me back to do an evening round. Though the money wasn’t as much, it was a relaxing job and got on with the people who I delievered too. The Christmas tips were cool too.
Oh what did I do as a teenager for money aye.

My worst job was my first one – when I was 16 I worked as a glass collector / glass washer at a nightclub in Bangor. Apart from the constant abuse I got for having long hair, the worst part was that I had to run around the whole hotel at the end of the night taking orders from staff for the chippy. I was never given enough money for the 20 or so orders, and because I was only paid £2.50 / hr, I ended up making *minus* money every shift :-/ I only lasted a month or so, but it gave me the work experience I needed to get a job with Dunnes
