Half Way Up The Stairs

#

Started by FNYANKEZ

Anyone know what that little opening bit Andy sings prior to Unbeliever from the MTV Brixton Academy show?

Half way up the stairs there’s a stair where I sit
There isn’t any other stair quite like it
it’s not at the bottom
it’s not at the top
so this is the step where I always stop

halfway up the stairs
is it up or is it down
it isn’t in the nursury
it isn’t in the town

And all sorts of funny thoughts
go racin’ round my head
it isn’t really anywhere

it’s somewhere else instead.

I did that from memory because ever since I heard it I can’t get it out of my @$#@$@#$ head.

Is it a nursury rhyme..a song lyric?

It’s a poem by AA Milne, the same author who wrote the Winnie the Pooh stories and it goes like this:

Halfway down the stairs
Is a stair
Where I sit.
There isn’t any
Other stair
Quite like
It.
I’m not at the bottom
I’m not at the top;
So this is the stair
Where
I always
Stop.

Halfway up the stairs
Isn’t up
And isn’t down.
It isn’t in the nursery,
It isn’t in the town.
And all sorts of funny thoughts
Run round my head:
“It isn’t really
Anywhere!
It’s somewhere else
Instead!”

Isaw it once on tv being cited by Robin, Kermit the frog’s nephew: awesome!

this poem really took something from me apart. if andy did use the lyrics of this poem in unbeliever its affect would have doubled at that time.
especially i liked this passage:

it’s not at the top
so this is the step where I always stop”

I just downloaded a T? appearance from a 1993 German TV show, and Andy recited it before Turn, so it must have been a bit of a favorite of his and not just a spur of the moment thing.

It was sung by Andy during a lot of the 1994 shows before Unbeliever. A noteable expection was Donington, where Andy performed “I’m singing in the rain”. :)

That’s because it was raining. I remember hearing it when Radio 1 did a live broadcast. They won’t do that now, would they?

Obviously Andy likes children songs as in Klubben last wednesday before Knives he sang a tune that goes something like this;

If you’re feelin’ sad and weary and you’re down in the dumps
There’s something you can do
And it’s don’t be grumpy, don’t spoil all the fun
And don’t be grumpy, so for on and on.

Or maybe he’s been singing lullabies to his song via phone and this one got stuck in his mind… :p

Can anyone say what it is?
I tried to Google it but all I found was some news article where bunch of school kids were singing it in some event.

Of course it rained - why else would he sing it? :P Andy did it also during one of the shows at the Bizarre festival I think.

The substitute/lost highway intro to Trigger Inside which is found on the dead laughing bootleg is also wonderful (that’s however not voice only)

Audacity will do it, think it’s still free. You can load the file as a waveform then cut out the bit you want and save it.

MP3 Direct Cut is really good. It lets you edit MP3s directly, with no loss of quality. Presuming it’s MP3s you’re dealing with, that is.
