Re-Releases, Cd industry.

Ok Guys and Galls,

With this worldwide Crisis, we all know prices are going up the roof,
and alltho the music industry is pushing for i-tunes to prevent illegal downloads,
cd sales are 75% of the stores around here that sell cd’s/dvd’s/games.
Now, there’s a huge crisis in musicland but am i the only one who’s noticing that
there are more cd’s being brought out than before the music industry crisis, re-releases are just so damn rediculous,
you can buy boxsets, deluxe, vinyls and the prices aren’t low either, for example U2’s Achtung baby Uber Delux pushes 589 euro’s here (490Bpounds in uk stores) so i’m not really believing that the industry is suffering so much.
But i wouldn’t spread my opinion to much, i’ve been a cd collector since 1996, and always will buy original’s.

What your thoughts on it ppl?

Yeah, I’m loving all the special editions and stuff that are being released these days.

Right now, in fact, I’m listening to Sun Dial’s album Other Way Out, which has tons of really good bonus material with it :-)

I’m not into downloads, really, whether legal or otherwise. CDs all the way for me.

I think all the special editions and stuff is probably a way to encourage people to buy the CDs, rather than downloading illegally. I don’t need the incentive, but it’s a nice bonus.

Well Agree Epitome, the special editions are great, and there is allot of options, and some have good bonus material too..

But i’m also noticing that if your a cd collector it’s almost impossible to follow up, in the late 90’s when dvd’s included as a fan bonus,
the difference wasn’t much, now we are talking about up to 10 british pounds, and you have all the superdeluxe, uber deluxe editions..
Basically, it’s becomming a shitload of money and i’m noticing not many bands do like T?

They still release a cd every 2 years…

It’s good to do some stuff against illegal download but making the prices unpayable for the collectors (or in my case fan of ALLOT of bands) ?

Yeah, I’ve bought deluxe editions of Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson albums for about £50-60 each. But there are very few bands I’ll do that for, to be honest. Most I’ll make do with the regular editions, or special editions that only cost a couple of quid more.

But I do agree, it is expensive. I listen to over 200 active bands, I think, so probably buy at least 40 new releases each year, plus old albums by bands I’ve only just got into etc. It’s pretty crazy really.

Exactly, like for example King’s X cd/dvd box is pricey but worth it…

But you say it all man, i listen to almost every style of music and to see the prices of the special editions..

I think it’s about time, the industry focusses on bands in the now..
I don’t want a new black sabbath, i want to know who replaces black sabbath for the future…

You think you’ve got it bad Dave? I buy nearly all my music on vinyl nowadays (cd if the vinyl doesn’t exist) and that means any new album is around £15, well until recently when the music industry seems to have decided the premium for vinyl isn’t high enough - so they’ve upped it, Empros by Russian Circles was £22 and it’s not even a double LP (luckily it’s fantastic) and most of the Music On Vinyl / Back To Black / Simply Vinyl re-issues are £20+! I think it’s aimed at people who buy the vinyl but only listen to the free (HA!) mp3s they get with it rather than play the record (buying into the experience of vinyl as one industry wanker put it to me a while ago). All getting a bit silly, I can deal with paying a bit extra as vinyl costs a fair bit more than a CD to produce but when it’s got to the point where a record costs upward of £20…I end up buying from HMV online who’s prices are incredibly cheap but then I’m contributing to the demise of my only local music shop - awkward choices.

I buy pretty much all my CDs online. To be fair, that’s because there aren’t really any local music stores, certainly not any that stock most of the albums I buy. And even if they did, they would be much more expensive. I can barely afford all the music I buy as it is, even for the usually reasonable prices online.

They never did. There’s a small HMV and a small independent store. Neither much good unless you want to buy Abba’s greatest hits.

You’re remembering that I was going to go to see Dodgy in Clitheroe (although in the end, I didn’t). I do live relatively close to Clitheroe, but I haven’t actually been there for years.

I still love CD’s and was surprised when I saw The Ethereal Mirror by Cathedral had a re-release with bonus stuff so I got that. I’m not sure why all this bonus stuff is getting released, if the labels are doing it to entice people back to CD’s then they are fighting a losing battle I fear. If they are doing it out of the good of their hearts for people who like collectors stuff then Im all for that esp. as Cathedral are one of my favourite ever bands! I don’t think CD’#s will disappear for a good few years yet.

Something else interesting i noticed recently T? reckon they sold 30,000 of Crooked Timber right? I just read an interview with Anthrax who were stoked that their new album did really well in the American charts for selling…30,000 in North America! Surely this must put T? in a very good position to do well as it seems 30,000 is a lot these days. Anyway, I hope so!!

Well, when CDs came out people thought it was the end of vinly, but vinyl’s still going. I think CDs will stick around for a long time yet, as there is demand for them. At least, I hope the stick around for a long time…

Same here, chris. I have bought a few MP3s, but only because that was the only way they were available and I really wanted to hear them. I hate when that happens, to be honest.

Well before the Music industry ‘Crisis’ there was less available,
meaning now each bigger band new release is also available on deluxe, vinyl, some even cassette’s !!!

I think it’s crisis for the musicians, but not the labels,
and who has to pay for that? The cd/vinyl buyers…

I’m a big fan of CD’s and always try to buy Delux one (Special Edition) at the beginning. But you know, there will be another special special edition take place after six month later of the proper release. And don’t forget 25th edition or even 30th edition discs (London Calling 25th edition far better than 30th, ironic right?) and it goes on like this. I have got two “British Steel”, two “Goddamnit”, two “Crooked Timber” two…

The whole re-issue/deluxe editions etc… do seem to target music fans of a certain age, mainly the hardcore music fan who bought the album the first time round. It’s bit of a cash cow re packaging to music collectors. I tend not to buy re issues of albums I already have, but will always opt for the option with the most music when I’m initially buying an album. I did buy Crooked Timber twice, though. There are some bands I’d probably buy deluxe re issues of, such as Therapy? and Faith No More, but to date, bar Crooked Timber, they’ve not been re issued.

I really hate it when an album is released as just a regular album and then maybe six months later there’s a special edition with a bonus disc of out-takes etc. It’s the band’s hardcore fans who are going to be most interested in the bonus material and they’ll already own the previous version of the album, so it’s clearly just a ploy to get them to buy the same album twice.

What I hate more though is iTunes exclusive bonus songs. I want the physical copy of the album, so I buy the CD. I don’t then want to pay for the whole album again just for one or two songs I don’t have. Fuckers. :-)

Good point Epitome,

Allot of artists release something and usually a few months later the limeted boxes happen.
It’s always been a mess with the bonus songs, it used to be a limted or japan for the bons songs.
Meanwhile the big company’s are aiming for Flacs.

Sales of all the boxsets aren’t going to well, so what i can see happening is that indie labels will rise, bands have to work again,
all i can say is that if this evolution keeps up, underground will rise :)
