Life’s Too Short.

#

Started by Squall

So the new Ricky Gervais / Stephen Merchant comedy started.

Episode 2 was last night and almost all the characters are talking in Ricky Gervais’ voice.

It’s just a rehash of old sketches and jokes from previous stand up / series.

Warwick Davis might as well be David Brent.

Not impressed so far.

I didn’t like The Office and didn’t watch Extras. I’m not going to bother with this one either. He was pretty good on the Eleven O’Clock Show though.

People were raving about the Liam Neeson bit (before and after it aired) from Episode 1, so I went and watched it.

Indeed that was the only funny bit out of what is basically as has been stated, a rework of everything passed.

I am enjoying it, but agree that it is Ricky Gervais’ voice and mannerisms that are prevelant in every scene. Certainly nothing new on show, but I liked their previous shows. Unlike their previous stuff, though, I’m unlikely to watch the repeats.

I gave the 1st episode the benefit of the doubt since the 1st episode of Extras wasn’t all that either but it soon improved dramatically.

This just seems tired and uninspired and they’re repeating themselves too much with the constant aids and cancer jokes in a “oooh aren’t we naughty” kind of a way.

And as for the Liam Neeson scene - I can’t have been the only one who saw that punchline coming a mile off ? Furthermore - that scene was described by gervais as the funniest thing they’d ever written. So it really does not bode well for the rest of it…

Finally - Gervais has tweeted that next weeks episode will have the most hate due to it’s controversial nature.

Sigh…

Gervais excuse is always ” It’s freedom of speech ” or ” my audience know i don’t really think like that “.

Well if make fun of terminal illness and handicapped people is all you ever do in your tv / stand up then where do you draw the line between tongue-in-cheek /self parody / and genuine offensive behaviour ?

Wow - Episode 4 was REALLY bad :-o.

It’s what I imagine The Office would be like if it was currently on it’s 7th series.

Yeah I agree, and lets face it, a dwarf stood in a toilet, in a bin and dressed as a teddy bear, isn’t exactly going to make small people feel better about themselves is it? I suppose the arguement is that they can laugh at themselves just like everyone else, but it’s not very progressive really.

I caught a few mins of this, its either really off the wall or just a bit crap. My understanding is that Warwick Davis can be a bit of a nobber sometimes though. Took me ages to get my head around both The Office and Father Ted, so maybe I’m just a bit slow.:

It’s just embarrassingly bad now - trying to be controversial but just coming across as totally pathetic.

It’s like they had no original ideas at all - made every single character talk like Brent and tried to make it like Office & Extras at the same time.

Plus Ricky has written most of these characters before. Crap Accountant = Crap Agent. Stupid Best Friend ( lifes too short / extras / The Office )

If this was Gervais & Merchant’s first show - It would be their last.

He is. :)

Apparently his next “sitcom” focuses on Downs Syndrome… *facepalm*

After seeing the Office (and loving it), I’ve never watched anything else Ricky Gervais has done. He IS David Brent. End of. Even his small part in Night At The Museum was “played” exactly the same. He doesn’t act. It’s just how he is.

I’ve quite enjoyed it so far, I think some of the reviews of this have been more personal attacks on Gervais rather than critiques. I do think Warren does act a bit too ‘David Brent’ in some parts but on the whole it’s been one of the better UK comedys this year.

Nothing worse than knowing you’re about to get tested in some way for instantly forgetting people’s names the moment you’re told them.

So Gervais tweeted that Life’s Too Short has been granted a second series - despite absolutely embarrassing viewing figures.

Embarrassing to the tune of less than 1m viewers a week.

Hopefully Ricky will take on board all the criticism. But being the arrogant one-trick-pony that he is - it’ll probably be series 1 again.

i gave up on this after the first 2 episodes. it was shockingly bad. the annoying thing is that gervais can do really good comedy when he gets it right. or he could do anyway. i’m surprised it’s got a 2nd series. the problem is that by “being” david brent all the time, which as already mentioned, he essentially is, he’s kind of shot himself in the foot. he seems like such an incredibly unlikeable person. although the christmas episodes of both the office and extras were brilliant.

honestly, hand on hearts here, had ANYBODY ever actually liked ricky gervais?
