Memorable Andy Quotes

He does say a lot of interesting / funny stuff, I think it would be good to have a thread for quotes from the man >:-)

I wish I could remember the exact words from his little speech last time at the AB, that was truly the greatest but I don’t wanna quote him wrongly.

I remember on the HA tour he said something about how all Irish folk music was really made for tourists and should fuck off or something like that which was well funny at the time. You probably had to be there…

I remember hearing him say (on a couple of occasions) “The Jim MacDonald years… Cocaine and sticky on moustaches” when about to play something from Infernal Love. Class :D

He called someone a Clampett for requested a song that had already been played earlier in the set. Made me laugh but was perobably more the sense of unimpressedness (is there a proper word for that?) with the guy for not paying attention that made it funny.

And there was the trousers joke at te Water Rats last year…

The best I saw was actually a fan to Andy and having to watch him recover…from the HA tour FabChannel Show (Paradiso) - When introducing Straight Life he goes into a bit about the song being about consumerism and buying too much stuff, and quotes Chuck Pahlinuik “Things you own, end up owning you” …and a fan said “Like your albums” Andy turned red faced laughed and said “Yes, thank you for buying our albums…” and pretty much said “shit… you got me”
Great “Gotcha” moment. Martin and Mikehell even laughed.

So am I right in thinking that you started the “Memorable Andy Quotes” topic whilst being unable to remember any Andy quotes yourself? :-D

(from the Wiki page, really made me laugh) “I’m one of these people who’s probably played every type of Les Paul ever made and they all sound shite. And James from the Manics, who’s a mate of mine, is one of these lucky bastards; he told me “I just walked into the shop and there it was!” I was, like, “no you didn’t, you spent hours in shops searching for that, you specky little twerp!”

A more funny one was that talk he did during the Crooked Tour before they played Diane (I think) about Riverside or something, and they proceeded to play a silly tune and then busting into the song. Anyone remember how that went?

@ soul doubt: well my memory’s really vague and as I said I don’t want to put wrong words in his mouth, but at the time it seemed to me at least like he was comparing Ireland to Belgium for a bit and basically saying politicians put us up with a lot of crap and make it seem like this crap is very important to our everyday lives while it actually isn’t at all ‘cos it’s just part of their political agenda, and that proof for this is how music brings people together and they can have fun together regardless of all that political shite. He said it way better and not very explicitly, but I believe that’s what it came down to. Though I don’t remember the exact words I do remember I was impressed at the time, even by Andy’s standards =) The AB gig was filmed but this was a cut part :(

didn’t martin temporarily leave the band before he actually left? i remember being at a show in london when andy said “the reason martin’s not playing with us is because the evil priest fucked him in the ear*”

*yes ear, not rear - he had an ear infection apparently

the “Ireland is made up of 2 different places, I think Belgium is made up of 2 different places, but music doesn’t give a fuck”-quote right before Exiles?

I think he had a burst ear drum - I saw them on the High Anxiety tour in Preston and they played as a trio

Maybe it was the whole talk he did where I do remember a part of, starting out with ‘We’ve been coming to your country for so many years, and we fuckin’ love it. You guys have always been there…’ *memory fades* It was a little bit ‘extra’ on that day from the normal ‘we love your country!’ talk, probably because Andy was in a really good mood, because it was the anniversary and stuff. Anyway this one’s great as well, if there’s one thing Andy is genuinely the best at it would be stage-talk, he could deserve a spot in any band doing just that >:-)

Ah…I wish I could remember them all but a time does stand out in the mid-late 90s (maybe ‘96? Can anyone help?!) when some of the crowd shouted ‘you fat bastard’ at him and he went backstage only to return with a multi-pack of crisps (I think cheese Doritos…), threw them into the pit and said ‘I may be fat but I’m as happy as fuck’.
There was also a time in Manchester around the same era (maybe even the same gig, who knows…) when the barrier collapsed and Andy asked us all to take a step back whilst they played ‘a little lift music’ as the security guys tried to fix it. I seem to remember it collapsed again and everyone got up on the stage.
And then there’s the customary ‘fuck George Bush’ before ‘Rock you Monkeys’. Saw/heard that one a few times. Loved it.
I wish I could remember more!!!!
