A Brief CracK Of Light

Thoughts & opinions? It’s a great album but some of it is going to have to grow on me, but so did Crooked Timber - took a while to fully appreciate all the subtle nuances of what is an absolute belter of an album and I’m finding that with ABCOL, each listen brings something new!

The songs are as standard structure as past albums, but are more about feel and space. I love, ghost trio and get your dead hand are so far my two personal favourites. :)

I’m so pleased the push themselves with nearly every release these days… Shows how stale other artists let themselves get.

You listen to a fair bit of dub Simon, do you hear these dub elements people have mentioned? Cos I don’t really and I listen to lots of dub, might just be my bass isn’t set high enough though. I’m enjoying the use of space in this one as well, given that aside from reggae / dub I mostly listen to what’s termed post rock nowadays I hear it used a lot, nice to hear it within a more aggressive rock sound again, as I felt CT employed it as well.

I hear some more reggae inspired bass lines going on, and the use of space has more in common with dub than a rock record. GYDHOMS I felt had those traits more than other songs. :) it’s kind of dub but T? Style ;-)

And some of us can’t play what we’ve got - vinyl has a massive scratch across GYDHOMS and Ghost Trio, straight out of the shrink it’s like that, not acceptable and I’ll be contacting Global to have it replaced! <PISSED!>

Most of the reviews seem to suggest the album works it’s way after repeated listens and it’s a grower.

Those albums usually have longevity and the albums you love instantly - you get tired of quickly.

pre orders tend to ship early, especially from Global (although We’re Here To The End didn’t annoyingly enough) so everybody who ordered from them seems to have got theirs now.

I have Premium and it’s not available yet. If you already have the album on your hard drive - Spotify will play it from there and get the info online.

But it definitely isn’t available on there to listen to in full yet.

It’s not on my Spotify (Premium) either (only the single). Still, I have the album and I must say it’s pretty good. I’ve listened to it about three or four times. “Before You, With You, After You” is one of my current favorites. “The Buzzing” is pretty cool as well. The band indeed seems to include some dub effects/influences and on The Buzzing it’s most prominent. It’s maybe a bit similar to the band Dub Trio. These guys combine rock/metal with dub, which is pretty noisy. So far my impression is pretty good. The albums is heading towards better than Crooked Timber and it is already better than One Cure Fits All (but that’s one of my least favourite T? albums). We’ll see how well it will grow on me in the coming days.

Did I get sent a different album to the one the reviewers, and you all got? I really don’t like it. I can’t find anything about it I like yet. Granted I’ve only listened twice, but I never felt this way about a new T? album before. They’ve been my favourite band since ‘94, and can do no wrong in my eyes, but this does nothing for me. Some of it sounds like the sort of music you’d hear at a bad modern art performance, out of tune solos, random impact words being shouted out. I guess I simply don’t get it. In particular Plague Bell and The Buzzing, I’m finding almost unlistenable. Had to turn it off in the car because I think people were thinking what are these noises. I’m really sad about it. I’m defo gonna keep listening, because I really hope I’m wrong, but I just want some good rock tunes. I guess T? aren’t that band anymore. Am I on my own here?

Joel when I first heard Plague Bell I skipped it for the next 4 or 5 times I played the album! Now I enjoy it, but The Buzzing and Before You, With You, After You still have some way to go to grow on me, the shouting bits remind me of bits of SP-YF and several of the songs feel like they could slot into OCFA or NANE quite easily, BUT - this is definitely a grower, give it time, I can really recommend headphones as well, never really been into them but have found them excellent for this album. Marlowe is just beautiful though! (Saying that I’m not too fond of the ending to it but5 you can’t have everything)

Should also say that OCFA took a long time for me to appreciate and I still don’t bother listening to half of NANE but the other half makes it one of my favourite T? albums, and even CT, which for me is the only thing that gets close to Babyteeth took a little while to fully appreciate and enjoy.

Well, so far I am digging it, will however admit it is very different (can imagine there will be very divided opinions here…).

Not mad about Marlow (although it is kind of growing on me) and Ghost Trio is deffo the weakest track for me (seems to go nowhere).

Otherwise am really liking it - favs would be Get your dead hand… and before you, with you… - last track is also kind of epic and trippy.

My main criticism would be that the album is way too short - for all the material they didn’t use, surely they could have put another 3-4 tracks on the album?

Anyways, will keep listening in heavy rotation :-)

Ghost trio is the stand out track on the album for me so far.
One note hypnotic guitar, powerful bass groove, and great rattling snare work.
Kinda like mildred pierce by sonic youth in that you get hypnotized and don’t want it to end.
Immense.

I got the vinyl delivered on Saturday…love The Buzzing and Get Your Dead Hand Off My Shoulder. Yes, there are lots of different influences in there. Yes, play it on a decent sound system or you lose the bass. I wouldn’t suggest to play it in the car!
One of the things I love about T? is that they don’t just rehash the same formula time and time again.
Can’t wait hear some of the new stuff played live in April…roll on Leeds!

Yeah I think Ghost Trio is one of the better tracks as well. Marlow is okay, but I don’t think it really fits in with the rest of the album. The last track is kinda weird for T?, but I dig it. Overall I like how the band tried some different things without going totally overboard or turn to arena rock. I like it how the album invites me for repeated listens. I haven’t had that in a long time with a Therapy? album.
