On the positive side, I like the short sharp shock (sorry) of a 10 track 40 minute album, and I love that Therapy? have still not done 2 albums the same. Also the production is great. But I still don’t ‘get it;’ after multiple listens, I just don’t enjoy listening to it, The Buzzing in particular is a horrible noise. I prefer the great sing-a-along, fist pumping, rock tunes you get in the likes of NANE, I’m really not interested in listening to their interpretation of paranoia via the medium of an album release. It’s not pleasurable to me. I’ll still listen to it a fair amount because they will always be my favourite band, but I’m looking forward to a another album in a few years which will thankfully sound completely different.

It’s not paranoia, in fact the earlier albums were closer to that, it’s (as all T? albums have to a greater or lesser extent been) about the human condition and how no matter what and who we have around us we are essentially isolated and have to find our own way to deal with the concept of our existence. That and getting drunk and head banging :-)
Or maybe that’s just my take on it.

I read in some interview that some of the music on this album was supposed to represent some kind of paranoia, and the Buzzing certainly fits that bill to me. I want it to be more like getting drunk and headbanging, at least as far as the music goes, the lyrical themes can go in any direction the writers want obviously, but for me I need to enjoy the music, and I’m not right now.

The responses sound encouraging! But it’s gonna take a while for it to get to the States, I spose. Global says it’s on the way, at least.

Ordered lp and cd on Monday and arrived via global Tuesday. First couple of listens and still not sure. Certainly an album of 2 halves. Very heavy first half will lots of bass and classic t? Drumming. Dont feel the lyrics are that strong on the album with a couple of exceptions. Get your dead hand and Before you and Living in the shadow are the stand out tracks for me.

My copy arrived yesterday (USA). My random thoughts: It gets better with each listen just like crooked timber. I could do without the instrumental though. I immediately thought of Fugazi when I heard Before You, With You, After You the first time. Then the buzzing reminded me of some of the old Nation Of Ulysees. So a different direction for T? IMO. Overall, I like it. :)

Really impressed with this album.

It’s quite dark, and quite stark in some places too, so might be a “difficult” album to come back to a lot…but I think it’s great that a band that has been going so long can push forwards into different areas and still retain what it is that makes them what they are.

Liking the sense of space in this album, as much as anything else - some really stripped down moments.

Different enough from CT to be worth making, similar enough to not be a let down (CT was effin’ ace, after all!)

Yes, I like.

The album is great, really like it… loved Living In, Marlow, Ghost trio, Get Your Dead Hand, immediately. Before you, Why Turbulence and Ecclesiastes took a few listens at first but love em. The Buzzing is growing on me… Stark Raving is the only track I currently have any struggle with… I really think this is a great confident album from men who know they know what they are doing…

Overall all I am a very happy camper and looking forward to Dublin, Brixton, and Cork..

Class band, pure class…

You’re confusing Dub and Dubstep mate, and despite the name Dubstep didn’t evolve from dub, it’s (well was back in 98 when the term first came about) a sort of combination of the darker elements of drum and bass and 2-step (a form of garage (not garage rock though) which is even shitter than most garage) before it evolved into what you hear today, DUB on the other hand is the forerunner to remixes (in fact a lot of the early dub pioneers were soundsystem engineers, King Tubby was an electrician and soundsystem operator), it’s a subset of reggae and often involves just the rhythm section of a track (sometimes cut up and re-dubbed) with loops of other instruments and sometimes snippets of vocals dropped in and out with a heavy use of reverb , echo and delay. It quickly became very popular within reggae so you got bands and producers making dub albums without using a vocal track as the starting point (the fact Jamaica didn’t have any copyright laws at the time helped a lot initially).
Basically Reggae has always had very very deep and heavy bass, dub took this a bit further and that’s why dubstep with it’s heavy heavy basslines got dub in its name.

If I’m ever stuck in a music round in a pub quiz I’m getting hold of you!

Definately a grower. I love it, very dense and complex in places. Into my 5th listen now but the first proper one without any real distractions. Still one of my favourite bands and I feel they are better when they stretch themselves and get out of their comfort zone.

Love the fact that T? sound like they’ve really pushed for something new on this album.
I’m a big fan of albums that you can find something different on each listen. Really think ABCOL works overall as an album experience.
Cheers guys!

Great sort of hallucinating bridge part in it , would probably even sound even better after a spliff. :)

Great flow to the album as well , the tracks complement each other in that order and it makes the album as a whole better than just the sum of the individual tracks.

Just some random ratings I wrote down for each track. This could change any time, but after a lot of listens I would rate the songs as below. I think this is one of T?’s strongest albums in year. I really wasn’t as generous for CT and especially not for OCFA. This one really has some strong material, good songs and I like the new direction they’ve taken.

Living In The Shadow Of The Terrible Thing 3,5/5
Plague Bell 3,5/5
Marlow 2,5/5
Before You, With You, After You 4,5/5
The Buzzing 4/5
Get Your Dead Hand Off My Shoulder 4/5
Ghost Trio 4/5
Why Turbulence? 4/5
Stark Raving Sane 3/5
Ecclesiastes 3,5/5
