Couldn’t agree more. Doves make the Smiths look weedy. Never really ‘got’ Carter, but can’t deny they were one of the hardest working bands around. They played so often at one particular toilet in Sheffield, that people thought Carter USM was a club night!

Is trancers the film where heads explode, or was that scanners? [that’s probably a no then]
Saw CArter twice at the Octogon, they were past their prime by then and would have been better at a smaller venue (like your toilet), but 30-Something and 1992 were both fantastic albums. I mention them now as when I first went to Sheffield, the 2 albums that all the students had were Nevermind and 30-Something

Exploding heads, yes that’s scanners -great movie.
Can’t remember the name of the legendary Sheffield toilet, but it was out in Attercliffe. Carter must have played there dozens of times before the made it big. A couple of my mate’s bands supported them more than once. If you were in Sheffield at the time you might remember them - The Glass Hammers?

Vertical Limit tonight - well, the woman at the gym (where they do ‘free’ rentals) said it was good.

Oops, this really isn’t about Nirvana any more is it. Perhaps I’ll start a new thread.

Heh, my mum’s a big Killing Joke fan so I was into them long before I ever heard of Nirvana and you’re right - it was such blatant thievery!
Despite that, I don’t think that they were overrated at the time at all. Since Kurt killed himself (I for one am not buying into the conspiricy theory) then they have been hyped and completely sold out by everyone, which wouldn’t be the case if he were alive. I’d say exactly the same about The Beatles.

Changed the way people listen to music? Come on now, very few artists do that. I’ve hummed along to ‘teen spirit’ in my time but here’s my list of those i think really HAVE changed the face of music.
Elvis. The beatles. The stones (maybe). The sex pistols (definitely)The sugarhill gang (for better - public enemy or for worse - run dmc)and most recently the aphex twin.
oh and the ‘live aid’ phenomenon changed the face of music too. Destroyed it for nearly 10 years!

have you ever read the lyrics?. its not just dumb lyrics
over macho catchy music. kurt cobain was one of the most genuine
and resistant people to the industry policy.
he was also one of the worst guitarists.that was what
made them more important. simple guitar riffs together
with some of the best lyrics written help to bring about
a groundbreaking sound back then. nothing before made
the mainstream garbage sound so minor and ridiculous.it was a musical revolution. want it or not.
nirvana shouldered the heavy burden of bringing rock music to the foreground.
and they were manipulated to the bone. a stereotype
of a crazy, weirdo, narcoleptic troubled young man is
created.his death sold even more.
but have in mind that without nirvana you wouldnt be
listening to the same music today.
it was a movement that marked a whole generation.

Shall I spell it out? Everything you claim for Nirvana had already been done - that’s why they’re overrated.Oh, and I felt that in 1993 too!

Finally someone else sees it. Nirvana didn’t start anything, they wasn’t revolutionary. Everything they get credit for, better bands in the past had done it before. I was overjoyed when I heard that Cobain sucked on a shotgun.

Which bit didn’t you like -‘average’ or ‘yank’?
Nirvana are obviously one of your favourites, but i really don’t get it - not even the lyrics, I’m afraid.
It is the word Yank that I have a problem with. Nirvana are one of my favourites, but that has nothing to do with it. Average is your opinion and since opinions differ, I respect that. It is just the bashing that I can’t stand. DROP THE NEGATIVITY PEOPLE! I don’t like Korn,so I don’t listen to them. I used to be a participating member of the GUITAR.COM board, but when a poll “Kurt Cobain VS Justin Timberlake” was won by the latter, just because of Cobain hatred, I drew my conclusions. A bit like this:

nirvana … over-rated? … maybe, but so what?
the press have a habit of hyping, unduly slating, skewing, mis-informing, exagerating etc
‘heart-shaped-box’ is my favourite songs ever. it means something to me. i don’t care if half of nirvana’s songs were rip-offs, it didn’t stop me from enjoying them!
i would much rather be buying and listening to Nirvana and Therapy? albums, than a majority of the synthetic pop music that is being fed to the masses
on the subject of rip offs, most bands are heavily influenced by other bands, and it doesn’t take much listening to realise that.
surely it’s more important that a band are passionate about what they do, reflect that in their performance, and that they produce something that is entertaining and meaningful to someone?

Ok I’m big enough to admit that the “shotgun” thing was too much. You can call me names all you want, but I have no sympathy for anyone who takes the coward’s way out and commits suicide. One of my best friends did and I’ll never forgive him. No one is affected by death more emotionally than your loved ones. It is a selfish choice that a loser makes. My life is stressfull with moments of overwhelming sadness, but also with moments of unexpected joy. That is what life is.
Kurt Cobain was an unhappy man who could’ve slipped away from the spotlight. He could still be doing what he loved, making music, in his basement without an audience. Now because of his choice, his daughter will never get a chance to know her father, except through soundclips and other’s memories.

Well, almost everything is ripped from something else. Just compare Budgie’s “Wildfire” to Iron Maidens “2 Minutes To Midnight” or “O Sole Mio” to Elvis’ “It’s now or Never”. Besides, Nirvana didn’t steal sth called “Sheepdip” (I don’t think ANYBODY besides you ever heard that song), they admitted they tried to sound like The Pixies.
PS: Last thing I heard some Irish rock band copied almost the whole 70’s punk-catalog and was so proud of doing that, they proudly called that album Shameless… THOSE BASTARDS!

I do think Nirvana changed the music business. Nothing better to illustrate that than a quote from metalsludge.com (metal heads will know what I’m talking about). It’s an excerpt from the Metallica-Icon show review:

Rob Zombie says, “Think back to a time before Metallica. Everything sucked. Everybody was a pretty boy. Things were desperate. Everybody had teased hair, spandex, it was horrible. But then one band came along. Four regular guys, T-shirts, jeans…” blah blah blah. Sorry Rob, I think you went to the Sebastian Bach School Of Misinformation. Metallica started in 1981, before Poison, Ratt, and the entire hair band thing took off. It’s not like Metallica came along and wiped out the hairbands or were even an answer to the hairbands. I think that band was called Nirvana.

The riff to teen spirit is exactly the same to the hair rock 1979 classic Scinse youve been gone by Rainbow.
But “ooh cricky…its lawnmover deth” is an amazing album tital!
So good it should have been mine for the amazing prog rock band “Zane and the Lowes”, formally “Uni Versial”
