Funny lyrics

Gotta love the occassional humour in Therapy?’s lyrics. Music that cracks me up from time to time always gets a plus (hence why The Fun Lovin’ Criminals are probably my next favourite band right after Therapy?). Which of Andy’s quirks still make you laugh even after all this time?

‘My grandfather… was cannon fodder’ still gets me every time =)

Not 100% entirely sure Andy meant that as a joke so much as a war reference…

I thought that to CE, seeing as that’s what the rest of the song is about.

Andy’s grandfather was killed in WW2 and is buried in Belgium. So yeah, the lyric probably wasn’t intended to be funny.

Really? I didn’t know that. My grandfather fought in the resistance and was almost killed a few times too, I just smirk at that line because I can relate to it and can imagine saying it to certain people (read: parasites). I think that’s what Andy intended as well because he’s very good (imo) in writing lyrics people can relate to in many different ways, which is one of T?’s prime strengths.

I always loved the line ‘A pocket full of change when it comes to pay’ from Last Blast. Although if I wrote that lyric it would be ‘A pocket full of change when it’s time to pay’ because that makes more sense. But I know what he means!

“My heart is broken. And you did it!” From This Ship Is Sinking is so straight to the point and cheesy, it’s funny. But it suits the record well, especially since its title is Never Apologize Never Explain. lol

I’ve always found a ton of humour in Therapy? songs, which I sometimes wonder if I’m reading into them. Andy has been clear in a number of interviews that various songs (Hey Satan - You Rock, Knives, etc.) are intended to be either ironic or outright satirical. I’ve always approached even stuff like Screamager as being as much a satire of “teenage anthems” as an actual teenage anthem.

IMO, this is one of the major reasons they’ve never been that popular in North America (where I live) - North American audiences just don’t understand satire and irony in music. They want either hyper-earnest emo/confessional/Linkin Park lyrics or obvious winking jokes, like with Cake and Ween songs. Give them anything in between and they get confused and defensive, like they’re afraid of being tricked. Alice Cooper only managed to make it big in the States when he realized that he could distract the audience with a ridiculously over-the-top stage show, which kept most of them from realizing they were completely missing the satirical aspects. Even the mighty Pitchfork, in reviewing So Much for the Ten Year Plan (http://www.pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/7988-so-much-for-the-ten- … 1990-2000/) (the only T? album they ever reviewed), can’t quite figure out that the material is not all meant to be taken seriously.

In reference to the original post, I always smirk when I hear “I’m in waste management / I cover shit up / I cover shit up / Forget it ever happened”

Very interesting take coldstar. It also makes so much sense. Especially after reading the pitchfork review.
I always found Therapy? to be very funny and weird.

Great post coldstar! Sometimes I have an opinion, and someone else manages to express it better than I could. That’s exactly what I meant.

That pitchfork review is just a bad review… I don’t mind negative reviews but surely the reader wants to know about the album, not this fucking wannabe journalists mindset in his early teens or whatever… any dick with dialup connection can dump half a sidesworth of A4 garbage up on the net and call themselves a ‘music journalist’

for irony/satire i dont think you can beat “stop it your killing me” a very well construced lyric ,which i think really shows of the bands acid sense of humor ,cairns is just genius ,and is obviously an intelligent guy as his choice of reading material shows ,he,s also very compassionate with it
