My opinion…

#

Started by Charlie

In My opinion, the Ark 21 years were the worst therapy albums.

Nurse
Troublegum
Infernal Love
Semi Detached

( all great albums )

Suicide Pact
Shameless
Ten year Plan

( hmmmmmmmm… )

High Anxiety

( We’re Back :D )

I know a lot of you like SP:YF but I cant really get into it…And shameless is only half a good album…

I’m really looking forward to the next one

i still fail to see the massive differences between shameless and HA. ok HA is more consistent and a bit more in-your-face but there isn’t really a huge progession from shameless.

unlike some people am a fan of both shameless and HA but i think t? need to throw another one of their trademark curveballs for the next album - 3 albums of straightforward punked up rock n’ roll in a row would just be tedious.

i tend to agree with mooney, Shameless and HA are pretty similar — although i do think HA is better front-to-back. with more listens, i found myself getting bored with about half of Shameless. who knows, HA is still pretty fresh to me, the same thing might happen with it. i’d also like to see another “curveball” with the next album. one of T?’s greatest strengths, to me, has been their ability to change up their sound while always making great music. another album in the Shameless/HA vein and i’d be close to advocating retirement…

Suicide Pact took me a loooooooong time to really appreciate. couldn’t stand it at first, but i persevered and over time each song grew on me. there’s a lot more going on there than appears at first, and it’s all pretty excellent.

edit — i’m an idiot.

If yer ask me (and no-one did, since I’m new and isolated from the group dynamic ;)), SP-YF is one of Therapy?’s finest hours. It’s a corker of an album.

When it comes to Shameless and High Anxiety…
Well, I have to agree with the folks in this thread. HA seems to be just more of the same kind of stuf from the Shameless album. I like both albums a lot… but, and I may be alone on this, I actually think Shameless is a better LP all round, when compared to HA.

I think people are still on the high from having a new T? LP to bang their heads to. Once they’ve calmed down and really listen to it, and see how it sqaures up to the band’s illustrious discography, they’ll see that it’s very good yes, but not as good as the last few records.

Don’t get me wrong… I love High Anxiety… I just don’t rate it above anything from the Ark21 years. For all those who don’t rate Shameless, I advise several more listens. It’s a great wee record, in my humble opinion.

this is where i’m torn on the Shameless/HA thing. i think there was a greater disparity between the good songs and the clunkers on Shameless, while HA is more consistent throughout: none of the good tracks reach the same heights as the good ones from Shameless, but the low points aren’t as low, either.

the songs on Shameless that are good are very, very good. but the bad ones are almost unlistenable…

Title: My two cents…

I think tomorrow I will spend the day listening to Shameless and then talk more. I have it in my head that it’s crap (I use crap in the comparative sense to other T? albums) but I think that it was more the disappointment that it wasn’t how I wanted that put me off it.

This is a guess, after tomorrow I may come back and say no, I was right, it’s bollocks. But we’ll see. It’s the only album I’ve ever been disappointed with and not instantly liked though.

Semi-Detached is the only record that’s really disappointed me from Therapy?
I got very nearly expelled from school for mitching off on the day it was released, to go and buy a copy in Belfast then go home and spend the day listening to it. I hated it for a long time, but over the last five or so years, it’s definitely grown on me.

I remember hearing Church of Noise for the first time, and being convinced it was some kind of terrible joke… then the album came out, and it in itself was even worse on the whole.

I met Michael McKeegan at an Ash gig in Belfast the year of Semi-Detached… I talked to him for a bit, and said as nicely as I could that I didn’t think much of Semi-Detached, and he himself sort of gave me a funny knowing look and said “Yeah, I know… not our best”, or something along those lines. That was only a few months after it came out.

But like I say, once it’s had time to work it’s way into your head, it’s a pretty good LP.

I think Shameless has brilliant songs on it, but it might be the case rather than listening in one whole go, maybe a few tracks at a time, songs like Joey and Wicked Man are up there but the album does tail off a bit towards the end. Same with Semi Detached, tightrope walker, don’t expect roses, lonly cryin.. and the boys asleep are great but over the course of the album they don’t sound they’re best.Suicide Pact is immense, a real two fingers to all record execs, and i admit it took ages for it all to sink in, though i’m glad it did.
High Anxiety is brilliant I think, the hooks are there, my favourite changes daily which can only be a good thing - only crap thing is it got me done for speeding on the M2 as i was enjoying myself too much and forgot to look at the speedo! I really love Limbo and Last Blast at the minute, but ask me tommorow and it’ll have changed no doubt!

Title: inconsistency

One of the things I like most about T? is their inconsistency.

Because they don’t appear to have been ‘trained’ and are pretty much making it up as they go along, they can hit highs that no other band (for me) can reach. On the other hand the lows are pretty fucking awful. It’s this that makes them so endearing (or infuriating, you decide!)

My opinion is that all of their albums have one (or more) absolute stormer, a few ok’s, and a handful of stinkers.

On the Shameless/HA thing, I think the first half of Shameless is fantastic, but the second half unlistenable. I’d say HA is the better album because there are fewer ‘oh shit, better skip this one’ moment.

Isn’t it good when you can say, about a band who’ve been around this long, that their latest is one of their best?

HA and Shameless are very different. HA is sorta like more teenagey (it ain’t really, but that’s the only word I got for it), shameless is pure rock n’ roll and nothing else. Shameless is a better album since all songs have huge melodies and great riffs. The opening track on Shameless is a real killer and those who don’t like it don’t like the true Therapy?. shameless is better than HA.

as I stated somewhere else, opinions are like assholes [some stink and some don’t] the reason why I like this band so much is, that they never recorded the same album again. they never had the same sound again. they never had the same producing style again (despite of chris sheldon). I’m always surprised of what they put out.
Me, beeing a fan (what a terrible word to say) since more than 10 years for now, is asking you: what makes the true t?
if you can tell me, I’ll invite you over to my place and buy you a beer.

cheers ‘I’ve run out of beer’ tom

True Therapy? exists only in your mind. Like you said, I was just stating my opinions and I respect yours :) .

Personally, for me true Therapy? is pure rock n’ roll, here are some songs to help you understand what I mean (these are 100% rocknroll tracks):

He’s Not That Kind Of Girl
Accelerator
Teethgrinder
Opal Mantra (can’t forget that one)
Gimme Back My Brain
Knives (despite the lyrics, lol)
+++++++++++

Basicly, for me it seems that Therapy? has one thing to them. Every one of their albums opens up with a real killer monster track. And that’s what I like, gives you a good feeling when you put the album on play.

Further blessings,
Sparlatacus
