on the subject of metallica selling out around the time of load, i always find it kinda of amusing when people say this as its usually the same people who wanked themselves silly over “enter sandman” “and “nothing else matters”. nearly 80 mins of folk rocky tunes and an country style ballad are hardly selling out to the masses IMO. of course, whether the album is any good or not is another story…
back on topic, am probably going to buy the new album as i’m going to see them in the RDS, dublin in august. anyone else going to that??

Damn I missed out that one :( But I didn’t missed out the one in peer. It was organised by Creeping Belgium, an official local chapter from the metclub. I don’t think they still exist right now. Now I’m a member of the Belgian Devildancers, a great local tour chapter with only one intention: to see Metallica live as many times as possible!

You mean when they back-stabbed Maiden (who were the real headliners)?

Personally, I wasn’t overly impressed with Maiden’s performance (and I like Maiden so it was a real disappointment for me).
But considering Metallica played on a different day to Maiden, I can’t see how them being there should upset anyone. Upstaging the bands that were due to play on Sunday, that’s true. It’s the poor sods who were on the main stage at the time I feel sorry for. Can’t have been fun watching half the crowd disappear on you.

I’ve just seen the new video and I have to say, boy, seldomly has anything sucked so hard!
I was a fool to think the rumours could be true and “St. Anger” would really be back to Metallica’s roots. It’s not. Not at all. This has nothing to do with the genius from “Kill ‘Em All” to “…And Justice For All” and it’s not good heavy rock like on “Metallica”, either. “St. Anger” sounds just like anything from “Load” and “Reload”, as if Metallica had never rocked, like they were only wannabes. The riff is totally uninspired and old, Hetfields vocals are annoying and the drums are produced way to loud (once again - Lars Ulrich has an ego problem, I guess.)
Well, maybe the rest of the album is better (yeah, right) but I think it’s time to finally write Metallica off the list of good bands. Bunch of old and satisfied sell-outs.

I got St Anger out of curiosity more than anything else. I used to love Metallica and then they broke! St Anger is nothing special - to be honest it’s disappointing. The songs are too long, lack any structure, James’s vocals are pretty poor and the drums sound like someone thumping a cake tin.
Reassuring to see that the old Metallica spin machine had us believing their lies again ;) This sounds nothing like their old stuff, it’s Load and Re-Load all over again with the volume turned up.
Biggest disappointment of the year? Probably not as by now we should have realised that Metallica are a spent force. Yes they’ll shift millions and sell out stadiums but on reputation alone as musically they just don’t cut it any more :(

does anyone else who got st anger think that the dvd with it is far better than the album itself, the sound is better, lars dosen’t sound like he’s hitting a piece of tin instead of a snare like he does on the album, and robert trujillo is the man! Was just a like disappointed hearing the album but then the dvd kind of made up for it.

hm, I don’t know. I always liked Robert Trujillo. He played with the Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, Ozzy’s band, Jerry Cantrell. He has done some cool things.

when you’ve got a guitarist of Kirk Hammet’s ability, why not use it? I’m an old skool Metallica fan, and while I’m glad to hear the crunch has returned, I can’t help but wonder that the album would have more flavour with the inclusion of some killer K. Hamster solos. Some of the songs coulda been cut down a bit too - some drag a little too long for me.
Aside from those little gripes, it’s definitely the best album since Master Of Puppets.

Title: Ignore my previous comment on this album…
…as it was based on a first listen. I’m now slowly coming to the conclusion that this a superb album. Once you get past the new drum sound, the lack of solo’s and the fact that it sounds nothing like Old Metallica it starts to sound better and better.
If this was a new album by a new band I’d be blown away. Once I managed to put aside certain feelings I think I am :)
It’s been quite a while since I had a U-Turn like this over an album I hated on first listen. Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning was the last.

i admit that i’ve heard nothing from the new album yet, but i think i read somewhere that it is 75 mins long? if this is true then metallica are BADLY in need of an editor in the studio, the last time a tallica album clocked in at under an hour was master of puppets (i think).
also, “st. anger”, a truely terrible name for an album, it must be said…

I was very impressed by the Rock Am Ring gig (saw it on MTV)! Loads of pre-Black Album stuff, which is a good thing, and I believe nothing of Load and Reload. St. Anger is a killer track as well. I can’t wait until Sunday, when I will see them at Fields of Rock!!

I saw them three times this weekend and I must say I was impressed!!! My expectations were high, but it even was beter. James’s voice was awesome…and no songs from load and reload!!! Their best setlists in MANY years and above all: they changed it for every gig!!!!!!!!! Rock am ring was the least of the three shows because the sound really sucked, it was like I was listening to a crappy audience bootleg…But Rock im park and Berlin were awesome!!!!! Especially Berlin, which was a real Metallica show and no festival. I even was lucky enough to meet the band in Rock im park!!! Pics of that meeting are up at the metontour site.
Now I’m heading for part two of the adventure: Paris (2 times), Italy and Fields of rock.
I’m tired…must…sleep…zzzzzzzzzzzz
