US street team

#

Started by darragh

Well well high anxiety out in the US with not a blink of a flyer or sticker in sight, not even a prominent placing in the record store. this is what i wrote to spitfire.

Dear Scott.
Dara here, just a quick note to say im not too thrilled about posting flyers stickers etc all around the boston area and today find the Therapy? high anxiety album in my local store with absolutely no fanfare whatsoever. I agreed to promote other bands on your label but i signed up for the Therapy? street team and have not heard anything. Please do not repeat the ark21 stance of zero promotion (correction they had stickers in the stores at least) in the US as it didnt help anyone. I trust you will clarify this matter.
regards
Dara

Title: Agreed. Please promo the band!!!!

Dara,

True. I am on the street team, and I will tell you this:

I got a stack of maybe 25 1/4 page flyers in single color to promote the new album. That’s it. I ended up making my own 8 1/2 by 11 color flyers for the record stores. Passed out probably 200-300 of them in my city, but I saw no other promotion of any kind.

Furthermore, the metal station in my city swears they have not gotten any sort of single promo to play. WTF????

:( Very disturbing. Very disturbing indeed…You know it has to be pretty bad to disturb a Therapy? fan.

I was actually about to send some stuff out between being swamped, doing a million other things, and working with a very LOW budget for Therepy. But since now, I can see your a complete impatient asshole, how about, you get JACK SHIT now.

This is the mail i sent to the VP just now
Dear Dennis,

My name is Dara Guiney, and I have been a member of your street team for quite some months now. This involved me passing out flyers, putting posters in record stores and at shows I attended. The promotional meterial I issued on behalf of spitfire was not for the band who I signed up for to promote but I thought in fair decency of a decent record label, I would be happy to distribute this material.
The band I signed on to promote was Therapy?, so I was concerned when I seen the album available in the Boston area, but with no promotion. I sent an email (which I have included) to Scott Meyer asking him of his awareness of this and hoping that I could be involved in promoting the new album.
I sent this email on the 5/22/03 and recieved no reply, so today I sent another mail (which I have included) which was more abrupt and displayed my disheartenment at not recieving a reply. I almost recieved an instant reply from Scott Meyer (which I have included) explaining how he was just getting ready to send a pack out to me but seeing as I’m a “complete impatient asshole i get jack shit”.
I am to understand form this that I have been removed from the street team for the reason of being concerned about my band and that Mr Meyer assumes I am just looking for free swag and nothing more. Granted i’m not one to refuse free swag but my whole point on being on the street team was to promote a band whom I have believed in and whom I believe will do well in the US market. So basically Dennis what I’m asking of you is some clarification or understanding of this matter. As I dont deem myself to be labelled an asshole out of concern for a band.Nor do I wish to be removed form the street team
Regards

Dara

Im a bit confused at the moment was I being an asshole for wanting the label to promote the band?

I dont get it. Any input would be helpful

Man, that’s enough to piss off the pope. Ok, maybe that’s pushing it a bit, but in all honesty it’s amazing that Mr. Meyer works PUBLIC RELATIONS and speaks so poorly to people who help do his job for next to nothing. Kinda sad really.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d love to know how this pans out. I understand the budget restraints the man is under, but it doesn’t excuse his unprofessional behavior elicited in his response. Pretty sad really, to learn that this is the kind of guy we are counting on to help get the word out on such a great band. Just proves this is neither a perfect nor just world, I suppose.

Speaking of what a ‘great job’ spitfire is doing of getting the word out…
my friend K runs an indie record shop, and I had her order copies of High Anxiety and the If It Kills Me single directly from Spitfire. Two of these copies were for a friend at a local college radio station, that had also contacted Spitfire about doing promotions, and had gotten no reply. A week after High Anxiety was released in the US, K still hadn’t received the order. When one of her employees called Spitfire to find out why, she was told that both High Anxiety and the single were OUT OF PRINT.
Now, I can understand someone making that mistake once.
But K tried to order copies of High Anxiety twice after that and got the same answer.
The order finally came in yesterday. But I am curious about this. Has anyone else been told that High Anxiety was not released in the U.S./is out of print/or unavailable for other reasons?

Well.. I know the distribution is utter
shit in comparison to even Ark21. I’ve
checked 5 stores that stocked 10yplan
and spyf and even shameless.. mind you
not a bunch of copies!, but usually 2
or 3… none had it.

Sadly it seems spitfire, promo and
distribution wise in the States… are
making Ark21 look good..

Well.. if I had some real data beyond
just “It’s not in this shop”, I might..
but the problem there being is it could
be more a business situation.. ie the
various stores don’t have a relationship
w/ the label // label’s distribution..

anyone know (don’t have the case
near me) who is spitfire’s distribution?
i’d like to hope it’s something like that,
but i’m sure BWS gets decent distribution,
but that might just be because they’re
scared of Zakk Wylde..

Title: Street Teamers..

Great work. I hope you get some sort of note from the higher ups. At least T? will be made aware that their record is not a priority..which can cause ripples too.

As you noted you are not in it for the swag..you love the band and you (like me) feel if they’d get some press/promotion they might actually get somewhere in the USA.

Nice work again, you worded it well mannered etc..

Good luck

Hey guys, how does one sign up for the street team? I’m also in the U.S. and want to spread some word about T? to the masses.

Thanks for any info!

P.S. “If it Kills Me” really needs to be on the radio here in Spokane, WA. All the airtime for the local radio station seems to be going to the new Metallica lately, and it SUCKS!

Notes from the past:
4/10 Sent package today
3/18 sent package of fliers, BLS stickers and overkill posters to test, those who don’t send pics or prove thier work one way or another will be cut.
I have seen no pictures of fliers, posters, stickers that you have “helped” in any way shape or form.
These are some Street Team stipulations:

1. When I mail out POP, posters etc, I need pictures of it. Even examples of you handing out fliers etc…

Street Team Champ,

Scott Meyer

So basically I got axed from the TherapY? street team without ever recieving one mail, sticker or flyer from THerapy? nice work spit fire. I reacon thats the end of that so.

It’s a common thing, wanting the photos.
It makes sense also.. it keeps the costs
down knowing that only people doing the
right things w/ the stuff are getting it.

What’s crap is that you signed up, and
offered to help out the other acts, specifically
to help Therapy?.. and you got jack shit
from ‘em for T?.

Sigh. So it goes. Not a good sign for
label support… I’ve delt w/ the
management of a few street teams in
the past (I’d typically do other
“favors”, and only once actually hung
posters + the like).. and they’ve
always ALWAYS been nicer about stuff.
Because it seems this guy is collecting
a check, period.. most other people
running the teams, while getting paid,
are fans as well…

ohhhhhhhhhh well.. ;/

Title: Wow…

This is rough. I think this is another case of a label who is going to ignore the N. American market. I am on the Street Team, I know Cody and Scott @ Spitfire, and they really are doing the best they can with what they’ve got. However, I do know that Spitfire has chosen not to promo Therapy? in the US because I haven’t heard a peep. I even had to go to three different stores in order to find a copy of HA. I ended up at an indie store, and found it there. The “chains” I visited before did not even know it was released.

Here is my two cents on this:

Spitfire (not Scott or Cody specifically) is mostly unwilling to promo Therapy? properly in the US. I say that instead of bitching about it, we should d/l the flyer above, and hit kinkos. Let’s put ‘em up! I know Andy and the boys will appreciate it, and that is who really counts. Let’s show the support Therapy? deserves!

Problem with this is, there’s little to
no point in putting up fliers, if a>
the band isn’t playing in that town,
b> none of the mainstream shops (which
are the ones most people use!) have
copies of the album.

sigh. not to poop on the idea, just
depressing all around.

Title: advertisements I HAVE seen

I was pleasently surprised that both REVOLVER and ALTERNATIVE PRESS magazines had ads for HIGH ANXIETY, especially REVOLVER. I just did’nt think I’d see them anywhere in the states. And my favorite indie chain here in Arizona did have little red fliers for it at the counter.I was pretty damn happy about that.
