your best T? gig ever?

#

Started by tatty seaside town

mine was in 1995 …
totally cool concert … i was in the first row in front of the evil priest himself …
it was my first concert ever …
they played in Vienna at the “Museumsquartier”
i remember that there was far too much fog everywhere on the stage befor the guys got on stage an during the first song “epilepsy” you couldn´t see anything except from the first row, where i stood.
Micheal jumped around the whole time …
(nowadays he seems to get old, but he stays the “jumper on the stage” …)
he accidental spit on my hand … i thought like “i will never ever wash this hand again” *g*
they played really like the good stuff from “infernal”, the good stuff from “gum”(no some songs, cause good would be every song from this record) and then like teethgrinder, nausea, accelerator and potatoe junkie of course …

well …probably i don´t remember the set list anymore …
but it was really the best T? gig ever!
The crowd were probably the craziest motherfuckers …

and there was the girl sitting next to fyfe playing the chello … does anybody know her name?
she had this real tiny mini skirt … you could see the interessting parts, cause she hat to hold the chello between her knees and when she got on or off stage for the songs she performed with the guys she had to put away the chello first before she could stand up :)

yeah this concert had everything … sex, drugs and rock´n´roll

still got headache when i think of my headbanging all the time … someone make a thread about “best T? song to headbang to?” i would say NAUSEA :)

cheers

Played cello on some dates when Martin was unavailable (before he was a permanent member). One of these was at Torhout in 1995 and another was the Norwich UEA gig on June 9, 1995. She also played on the band’s Evening Session, where the set list was Bad Mother, Our Love Must Die, and 30 Seconds. Other credits include cello in Paul Weller’s band (she was on Later With Jools Holland) and playing cello on Bush’s The Science of Things.

But they may have had another stand-in female replacement cellist. *shrug*

hats off to what was quiet possibly the best night of my life :D

And London, The Mean Fiddler in August 1991. It was my first my first T? gig ever. actually, I went there to see Babes In Toyland but their support act (these young and gifted fellows we all love so much)blew me away. I’ve never heard anything of them before, but a T? addict from then on.

hey, i was there too, and obviously it’s my favourite gig. the setlist was very good (even if in milan few months before was a little better), the atmosphere was hot, the band was in a good mood, and to see a naked man in such a very good shape was very cool :)

Great location and very good atmosphere.

I’ve only visited 8 gigs, but my top three would be:

1. Zottegem, 2001
2. Utrecht, 2001
3. Lokeren, 2002

Surprisingly, two of those were festivals, be it very small ones. I haven’t been to any gigs before 2000, so I can only rank recent gigs!

If we are just talking T? gigs, the few bits I remember of Ocean on the Shameless tour were fantastic, just cos I was amazed how many Shameless songs they played. Unfortuantely (and don’t get me wrong, I’m not proud here, I’m annoyed with myself) I was little the worse for wear so I don’t remember as much as I would like. But the bits I do remember, rocked.

Aside from that, I guess Tunbridge Wells Forum was good cos it was so small and we got Fat Camp for the first time ever.

London this tour was too manic to actually _enjoy_, it was more a case of survival, but Oxford was cool (except for that stupid step).

But perhaps the moment that lives in my memory is.. hmm, 2000, 2001, not sure, but I’d seen T? two, maybe three times that tour. Was knackered. Went to Portsmouth, met up with Evil Elvis (2?!) and stood at the back waiting for them to come on, saying, I’m knackered, I’ll stand here with you for this one. And in a shock change to the set list (yes, there USED to be surprises!) they opened with Knives. Within two bars, I had put the drink down and dashed to the front. Some may not get it, but, opening with that song, when I was so knackered, well, it just spurred me… and I went for it. Bull by the horns.

The only other time that has ever happened is when I went to see Reef at the Forum (I believe). I like them, but am not a huge fan, but went cos a lot of mates were going. Was going to be content looking from a nice vantage point. 30 seconds in, I realised they had just grabbed me, and I was well up there.

It’s good when bands can do that.

Iris! I was at the same gig in Tilburg in ‘94. Cool! Did anyone go the the postponed gig in Gent, ‘95? They were actually gonna play in Deinze, but there seemed to be a few problems so the show was cancelled. You could use the same ticket to go to Gent… Love the shows they did in De Vooruit. I think my favourite is Doornroosje 2000. Definitely! Graham breakdancing, The A-Team sounds, Martin flying round through the venue. I remember somebody called him Martinair at that time…*

The recent Belfast gig was intense. Absolutely amazing! The best ever! If you weren’t there, then you’ll get to see it all when the DVD comes out!

After that it would have to be at The Mill in Preston in 1994. A small club gig, before Troublegum was released. Opal Mantra single had just been released, and the band were really starting to make an impact. A full house, and I stood about a metre away from Andrew James Cairns, as he cranked it out.
There was this laughable barrier, and it kept collapsing, due to the mental moshing - some laugh! Plus the fact that we got to hear Troublegum tracks that we’d never heard before.

I also remember the opening act Shrapnel, mainly cos they’re lanky git of a bassist went crowd surfing and stood on my head! Oh, I had a sore neck in the morning! What a great night that was though..the sweat was dripping off the ceiling and I remember people climbing on the pipes which ran along it! Judging from what you’ve said about Andy, I was probably right next to you as well!

Title: Re: your best T? gig ever?

Hard to pick just one. Me, I’d say all of them including the very first one ages ago when I saw them just by chance and had never heard a song before.
However, the show at the Ocean in London in 2001 was awesome. After that we just were unable to relax for weeks, too much adrenaline I suppose.
Yet I still think the best one was the last one I been to and that’s in Italy. I’ve seen Therapy? play a bit of everywhere in Europe but I’d never seen them play in my country before and I had not been to Italy for a long time so I was looking forward to it and was very excited. Didn’t matter if the venue was too big or too small, if it was sold out or if there were only 13 people, if the setlist could have been a bit different…everything was just perfect and we couldn’t have begged for more. They started Potato Junkie, I knew it was nearly over and felt kind of sad. Me mate and I had the best time of our lives, since we met up at the station in the morning, got our face and ears sunburnt, meant to open a bottle of wine we had brought and swore for hours after realizing we’d forgotten the corkscrew, wore santa’s hoods on the beach and were given funny looks. the gig itself was good fun and we lost our voice singing along. we came back home grinning from ear to ear, happy, content, we testified something great again, we took pity on everyone who has never seen (and never will)those four guys at work. All of that we still talk about after a whole month so it must have been something important that we’ll never forget

just before the gig I said to my friend I wanted to get one of the setlists and thought, “let’s just hope Michael won’t spit on any of them”…of course we were joking about this habit of his, then at the end of it my friend was given the setlist nearest to him and back in our car she said nonchalantly “Awww look, there’s a spitt…”. “Whaaaaat?!”. “Naaah, was only kidding…there’s just footprints…;)”

Title: Paris, Olympia, 1995 […] […] […]

ok, i’m new here and i seem to have ripped my guts out on this message: much nonsense, much fan-psychoism and whatnot…if you read it be warned: this message has ended up being a complete rant about some feelings related to T? gigs…

“well, my first big show ever was the T? gig at the Olympia in Paris 1995: since then, nothing has really been the same :)

actually, that concert will always be a reference for me of what a concert should be…and i can assure that i’ve been on many a gig since then :)

when i moved to madrid, spain back in 1998, after missing their Paris gig in May of that year (frantic action that may was…getting a bit nostalgic…sniff), i was a bit melancholic (sp?) and thought i’d missed out my chance to see T? ever again (beleive it or not, i didn’t think they were going to last much after Semi-Detached, though i personally loved it ;))…fortunately -and it really came like a shock to me- my slow downward spiral to depression was quite interrupted by a magic evening in september/october 1998: new country, new city, a new start…that never comes!…a bad experience at the very first to keep it short and: there’s T? again, the guys that introduced me to live rock performances!

in madrid, T? wasn’t as hyped as elsewhere in europe (the music scene was by then on of my major complaints…call it small things if you want…but those matter a lot;)) and except for tgum noone was very interested in them…and after neither actually…

soo…i see this little anouncement on a “mishmash” panel behind a tv-guy and read SOMETHING like the T? semi-detached logo…hm?…could it be?…well, there are few words for my then manic-depressive reaction (uplift of course): for one month i was living for that moment (YES, no matter how good the guys are, THAT is sad!)and when the moment came for three hours -including groop dogdrill and Diamond Dave by the t-shirt stand;)- i was in my own world of happiness; just too hard to describe ;)…the T? show i’d regretfully missed out in Paris due to an insignificant (i know now…) exam was to be the last time i missed out on things i REALLY want to do: carpe diem, live for the now! :)

beginning in Paris -my personal affair to T? is music is really a PERSONAL thing as you’re reading (if you, whoever you might be, are still there)- i’ve ended up in madrid; an incredible uplift in the midst of downhill and EVERYBODY singing (in fact, i remember complaining about the low levels of the PA…) and having such a great time! one counterpart though was that the guys that were there were not what i’d expected: no die hard fans there and i was the only person screaming and awaiting (shouting) for Potato Junkie during the whole show. i remember mihael taking a pic of us and i’m still wondering where/if he still has it. fan-nonsense for sure, but i’m the guy with that “perrier” hat on ;)…

and now, with what is for me the most consistent album (as a whole) since Semi-Detached (yeah, during the years i’d really appreciated those easy singalongs, “catchy” melodies of that album… ;)): HIGH ANXIETY!

so, if T? don’t come to me (haven’t visited spain since ‘98) i WILL have to go to them, specially after this GREAT album.

see u in Portugal this summer!

Rock Ternat 2000!

My brother-in-law and myself didn’t have tickets, but we thought it wouldn’t sell out so we went to Ternat (1,5 hours drive) in the afternoon. Of course the festival was sold out, but we bought one VIP ticket from some guy hanging around at the entrance. My brother-in-law used the VIP ticket, and this guy got me in backstage, pretending to be his assistant.

The show itself was amazing. It was on the SMFTTYP tour and they played everything I wanted to hear. It was as if they could read my mind. Between songs, I would think “Hey, I haven’t heard Isolation for some time” and they’d start Isolation. Halfway through, when they started Die Laughing, I just forgot about the world around me and went totally nuts. The most intense performance experience of my life. There was one moment, I was in the middle of the pit and by chance everybody was moving away from me. I stood there, both arms in the air, totally alone, on top of the world. I will never forget this moment, it’s impossible to describe how it felt.

A close second would be “De Velinx” 2001 on the Shameless tour. Very nice venue, people shouting fo Teethgrinder between songs, T? coming back for 2 encores (and only one encore on the setlist) and finishing off with Teethgrinder, Andy throwing his guitar away during Teethgrinder, lots of great memories. It was so good, that I went out the next day to buy tickets for Tilburg a few weeks later.

Planet X, Liverpool, sometime on the Pleasure Death tour. that was great, just because nobody was really expecting a band like them. they were supporting Anathema, and i’d say about 80% of the audience was there for them.

Krazy House, Liverpool, Nurse tour. heh, i was completely hammered at that gig, as was my girlfriend. towards the end, we were about to get thrown out by the lame bouncers. next thing i knew, Andy appeared, “he’s with us!” threw a laminate round my neck and escorted me to the dressing room. after about half a beer, we realised my girlfriend was still out there, so Fyfe lent me his laminate to go and grab her. fun!
