I’ve not heard the album myself, but since they advertised on tv the other week we can’t keep the thing in stock, it keeps flying off the shelves!

Heh, when I heard it my first thought was actually ‘now this is what David Grey’s debut should have sounded like’ - he is indeed very dull but I think he and Damien Rice are worlds apart.

yep david grey(quite an apt surname) and damien rice are worlds apart. but in terms of “this is shite and it makes me want to kill myself” type thang, they are about equal.

What is it in Ireland at the moment, david kitt, damien rice, mundy, kieran goss, paddy casey…aghhhhh,
all tedious excuses for entertainers.

the only singer songwriter in Ireland that i know of, that is worth his salt is Damien Dempsey. But most people dont like him, just shows that taste is a personal thing.
Come to think of it, Graham hopkins new band are more of that boring dirge…
Middle of the road shite that doesnt challenge at all.

… and that doesn’t include the boy/girl bands - in Ireland, such groups thrive like vermin. I think they’re more popular here than any other country in the world.

Marketing men are evil, just pure evil. Louie Walsh too.

The best band in Ireland at the moment, in my opinion, is TURN - and they had to release their album by themselves, cos no record label in Ireland or the UK was interested.

What a lousy country this can be to live in, at times…

the music “scene” in ireland… i dunno at all, at all!
playing in a band in ireland kinda blows, i find when playing here and there it can be a bit frustrating, playing to 2 or 3 people because you’re the opening act and the headlining band and their friends dont know ye so they wont watch ye. I mean how many people on these boards would go see a band they nothing about? there are small, non profit promoters out there that put on gigs throughout ireland but the fact that people dont show up, the venues dont fancy losing custom when a cover band who play “a great version of stairway, man” could be bringing in the crowd.

in cork you have the R.C.M.C, limerick the A.M.C., Galway N.N.M.C., longford: NOEGO Promotions, dublin and belfast also have numerous collectives.

in galway i have seen local(one man down, diatribe, trigger), national (tooth, dangerfields, dogboy conspiracy, and international(darkest hour, dawncore, skinlab, brood, lightyear) bands, put on by people who want to do something about the “scene” (i hate that word). not trying to attack anyone but you can all contribute: fanzines, webzines, go to as many gigs as possible, start a band. make the word realise that before louis, before flatley, we had therapy?, thin lizzy, kerbdog, the boomtown Fu#king rats…

NNMC in galway: http://way.to/newnoise
“The next New Noise Music Collective show is on the horizon. Mark Wed. 22nd Oct. ’03 in your diaries or carve it into your arm as there is going to be a benefit show in The Warwick in aid of the Galway Rape Crisis Centre. Doors will be at 9pm and threading the boards on the night will be (in no particular order): Trigger, Giveamanakick, The Dogboy Conspiracy, Fixxxer, Ultan Conlon, 10 past 7, James Finnegan and Fuktifino. Besides it being for a very good cause, it promises to be a completely kick ass night.”

if you can make it please do.

anyway enough of my ranting… take care

Erk, I agree with you there man. There’s a cover band from my town (they do Skynyrd & Floyd etc…), and they’re treated like fucking Gods

I always try to watch original bands (believe me, it’s very infrequent in my town), but a lot of Irish people just haven’t a fuckin’ notion. They’re not interested in listening to something they haven’t heard on the radio ten times already that day.

So a lot of local bands end up dropping any original material they started off with, in favour of covers, ‘cos otherwise venues aren’t interested in booking them.

It’s all horribly stale :(

The buds are a great cork band, like shambuenos as well and some others.
I like damien rice, hes got a beautiful voice and is nothing
i repeat, nothing like david “oh shit, me heads fell off from all the bobbing up and down” gray.
plus he’s a cohen fan…what you dont like cohen? ARRRRRGH :D

leonard cohen is great… the first time i heard him was on ‘pump up the volume’, quality movie, ‘everybody knows’ was on it. i was a bit pi##ed when i bought the soundtrack and there was a cover by some other folks on it, not to worry though rollins, pixies and a few other acts were on it!

I was in Cork last Sunday night for a gig by TURN, and was very impressed by local support band “Rulers of the Planet”. It’s always nice to find a support band that DOESN’T suck donkey balls! :D

Any Irish from this board ever hear them play? A cool lo-fi metal sound with a vocalist that looks and acts like Ian Brown of the Stone Roses. I know, that sounds fucked but works very well. I’ll be buying their EP, methinks.
