But that’s a bit different, isn’t it? You mave not have heard anything of Tomahawk’s music, but you surely have heard who’s in the band and you decided to go and see them because of Mike Patton and the rest of the band, didn’t you?
Well, of course, I didnÄt go to see bands I don’t know anything about. I may not have heard anything of them or their music, but I need to have at least a description what kind of music they’re playing. I don’t want to end up at a free jazz show or at a Schlager event. :)

Well, actually I decided to go and see them because Mr. McKeegan recommended them to me when he saw they were playing in Amsterdam. I found out at that point that Mike Patton was in the band. However, I don’t really consider that knowing anything about the band as a band is about the music, not about the people, if you know what I mean.

You are technically correct, though ;-)

Well, actually in this case, I’m wrong and you’re right. I thought that Tomahawk got so much media attention that you might know what to expect even without having heard their music. But as you seemed to have missed the reports about them (due to your constant work for the T? cause, I suppose :)) I was wrong, ‘coz recommendations don’t count in my opinion.
Anyway, did you like them? I’ve seen them in Cologne a few days earlier or later and thought they were pretty amazing. I hope you didn’t miss the Melvins on that night.

To be honest, for whichever reason ;-), I hadn’t heard anything about them in the media, so I was a complete Tomahawk-newbie going to that gig …and man, am I glad I did! Mind you, this was their first tour supporting the self-titled debut, not the Mit Gas tour…

I enjoyed myself to bits that night and was blown away by the energy of the band, and especially Mike. I now have both their albums, as a result of going to that show. Sadly, I missed them on the Mit Gas tour when they played in Amsterdam again.

I also thought it was quite funny that he was setting up his own equipment before the show :-)

I don’t recall seeing the Melvins, so that’s either due to the fact you were talking about their second tour, or they didn’t make a big impression on me.

I was talking of the second tour this summer.

If you enjoyed Tomahawk, check out Fantomas, if you don’t already have. Tomahawk sounds like a mixture of Faith No More (when they’re rockin’) and Fantomas (when Mr. Patton does his vocal exercises :)). They were on tour last year and quite disturbing to the loads of Slayer fans in the audience (‘coz Dave Lombardo did the drumming).

i found shit loads of great bands by turning up to gigs and seeing band i didn’t know, specialy when they’re support acts to tha band you actually wanted to see, like Dark Star, Tenner, Orange Can, Crashland… all of which are now dropped, broken up or playing weddings and christenings somewhere in sidcup. but at least those four i would generaly consider some of my fave bands ever, (‘cept tenner who only released four songs) still…

I’d definately go see a band I’d never heard of. I go to small local gigs all the time. OK so you can’t always guarantee the quality of the music. But just occaisionaly you get some good, cheap entertainment. Every band has to start somewhere. The good musicians get encouraged and the bad ones get told to sod off.

Absolutely. That’s how I got into Therapy? - had never heard them or even of them but went along to a gig for the sake of it - best night of my life :D

It’s always cool to go to smaller venues and check out the local bands, like Smurftastic said - you never know what you might find ;)

Probably wouldn’t go, mainly as none of my mates would so have no-one to go with (the cool ones all live further north ;)), but then, stay in far too much - really love Scarce, and only heard of them because they suppported another bad, so therre’s definitely gold out there.

I’ve seen loads of unsigned/ up and coming bands on nights out, the only problem is, in the morning I usually can’t remember if they were any good or not! The only band who I could really remember was David Devant & His Spirit Wife!

I would…but if the gig was like £20 then I’d think hmmm.
I’d have to know a little bit about them.
i’ve bought albums without knowing anything about a band other that “They’re a bit rock/punky/metally. Vocals a bit like Bon Scott meets Ozzy” or whatever.

people not going to local shows: this is one of the reasons why real rock music is going under, and mtv spins all those dickheads all the time. its not easy for a new band to gain a following…

on the other side, nowadays everyone believes he can make music, with all those shitty bands around, who really wants to go to a local show, when the chances the band is good are about 1:1000…

bands (plus it was at a venue i’ve hated
for years due to their over use of red
lighting, which fucks with some cameras,
inclluding a few of mine.. figured good

ended up really liking one of the bands,
plus realized the amazing talent of the
guitarist in “the swinging utters” who
could play accordian while smoking a cig.
sent some photos along to their site, which cool enough.. all emails are answered… by the bands wives! it’s really a cool family vibe..
