To make sure my recent moderation actions in the ‘Again and Again’ thread haven’t given the impression that I’m against discussing T?’s drummers, I would just like to repeat here what I said in my e-mail to richboy explaining why I edited his post:
i would like to say that rene is not against discussing the drummers - he cleared that up with me as he says above.
anyway, having seen the band live with fyfe, graham, keith and neil, i think fyfe was the best drummer, not only that therapy? had, but better than most other bands i can think of. in kerrangs review of their gig at the ulster hall (the one that turned out to be fyfe’s last gig with the band) when the magazine wasn’t quite so bollocks it said that he was the best young drummer in the british isles, and i’d go along with that.
having said that, fyfe left a long time ago. so therefore if they didn’t get a new drummer, there would have been no band for the last 8 years, so that does make the discussion kind of irrelevant. on the other hand, if graham or neil had been crap, there wouldn’t have been such a discussion either - because there would be a right answer. you have to admit that although everyone has their favourites, all of therapy?’s drummers have been very talented.
i think we should have a big drum-off comp between them all to decide

I think thats not a point …
T? wouldn´t even exist if Fyfe wasn´t in T for the first 5 albums?
so its 5 albums him and 5 the others …
you can see it from different sites really …

Yeah some drumm battle would be great :)
Like some DJ Battles *g*
I don´t think that graham or neil are crap … but as i said some months ago graham couldn´t play everything Fyfe could and the old songs didn´t feel right with him. But thats everybodys own feeling really!
Graham had a much more primitiv style … i don´t like primitive drummers … (that doesn´t mean, that they are crap players … but i like to hear some things going on, on the drums - some more like 8 or 16 notes and the speed is irrelevant … that doesn´t impress me … as i know how to play it)
I think Neil is a step forward.
Someone knows if he uses a timble for the old songs yet?
He didn´t have one on the last tour :(

I’m kinda biased, since I always had a thing for Fyfe, but I’ll vote for him anyway. Then again, I’m not too fussed these days, so I guess mostly anyone would do…

Here is my interesting T? drummer-related story. Loved Fyfe, he was a big part of why I ended up loving the band so much. Mid-late 90’s though, my second favourite drummer, with a very crisp and original style, was Cable’s drummer Mr Neil Cooper… So imaging my delight when my favourite band seemingly randomly hooked up with my 2nd favourite drummer… ahhh! I told lots of people who weren’t interested. And now I’ve told all of you!
Is it true Graham is related to Ronan Keating? If it is I’m not surprised T? never really mention it… though maybe they could have reached a whole new market supporting Boyzone… ‘hey kids, this one’s called Neck Freak…’

There exists a classic photo of therapy? and boyzone sitting around together backstage or at some awards, the look on the therapy? guys faces is priceless! Just too good for words, if looks could kill, the photographer would be a corpse, boyzone on the other hand are all quite chuffed looking, with the tough guys giving them some street cred!
I think the photo was in a hotpress magazine year book from about 5 years ago? must see if i can dig it up.

Fyfe all the way.
When he was with them,THERAPY? were still the best three-piece band around. THERAPY? made their best work during that period and Fyfe definitely contributed to that. His drum sound was very special, kinda metallic at some times like I never heard by any other drummer after again. Neil seems like a good bloke too. Graham didn’t appeal to me much.

My personal opinion is that Fyfe is (was?) great drummer and I specially love that “bongo”-sound on Nurse, etc.. Currently I think that Neil is the greatest drummer of all time in all fuckin’ music business but maybe HA (being so fuckin’ great album) has something to do with that opinion :D

Neil is fanfu*kintastic! With the same influences and styles to fyfe and the rest of the band, he fits perfectly. Graham was mint! His loose style fitted with what T? were doing at the time, but imagine if Fyfe had played on SP-YF? How cool would that have been, could have ended up with a totally different album.Anyway, perhaps this thread has died a death so to speak, and we could talk about something else…just a thought. If we dont then it will just be bickering and people putting down these three drummer’s talents. And lets face it none of us have ever acheived what these three guys have done, so maybe we should give them a break…

But in saying that, all the drummers that have passed through the halls of Therapy? have fitted the bill.
And I agree after hearing the sample of Rise Up, it was YEAH. Neil is really shaping up had is really getting to grips with the Therapy? sound but at the same time bringing something new to the band. Which is what you want.
Keep up the good work Neil!! Much appreciated.

Really can’t put the drummers of T? to “who’s best”-order…
I have enjoyed everyone’s playing on record and on stage. They play so differently comparing to each other (ok, Fyfe & Neil has similarities) that it is doomed to try to figure that out who’s best because there is so much opinions that are responces.
Somehow one The Smiths lyrics popped to my head: “Some girls are bigger than others, and some girls mothers are bigger than other girls mothers”. :D
Hopefully Neil likes to be in T? and don’t get fed up with touring like the 2 others…

Being a drummer myself(and pretty damn good I might add),I think Fyfe,Graham and Neil were and are some fine drummers and all have added to the T? sound.Obviously Fyfe shaped the sound for them early on and there are a lot of people who are loyal to him.I found T? again many years later when SPYF came out and I was blown away by Grahams playing. There was a lot of imagination on that album and it also grooved.I liked that.He does play a bit primitive at times but if that’s what’s called for then so be it.I would also call that playing simple.I do miss him in the band.i think Neil has injected some vigor into the band and put some fire under Andy and Micheals asses.I’m really not a fan of the double kick kit and the one rack tom but to each his own.

Not being a drummer myself I can’t comment on any of the technical bits. SO I’ll just comment on the effect each seems to have (to me) on the music.
Fyfe clearly had more of a contribution to shaping the overall sound of the band than the others. His rhythms were much more diverse, original and (pardon the pun) groovy.
Graham to me ,seemed much more of a steady pounding big hitter in the John Bonham vein. But I agree with sonofjaguare, the stuff on SPYF was great. Especially Ten Year Plan, the drums drove that sone more than the guitar.
Neil seems to be more of a jackhammer. It’ll be interesting to really listen to his contributions on the new CD.

I’m just commenting on his kit.No I can’t hear what the kit looks like but I do know what it looks like and it looks like a kit from the hair metal days and it’s pretty cheesy.Either there should be another rack or lose the second kick and use a double pedal.Nothing against Neil but the kit is cheesy.

Hmmm, probably agree myself with that, but I also think a lot of drummers are getting lazy and using two feet for all the fast bass drum work when sometimes they should be using one-footed techniques and developing the speed of their right foot (or left, if they are left-handed). Using two bass drums (or a double pedal) has a time and a place, of course, and there are some sounds that just don’t work one-footed, but I think you lose some of the bounce and the feel when you use two feet.
