Still listen to their early stuff, but can’t say I’m that bothered by the news.

i’m a bit surprised that they are going to split, i just read it on nme.com. the best thing to come out of this is that i already had tickets for the astoria gig in december which will presumably be their last ever gig. i actually thought the last album was rather good but the single from the greatest hits album was terrible. overall though i think the world will be a sadder place without suede.

This is a bit of a shock i read on another site Richard was talking about Suede releasing a new album as early as next year.A New Morning was a commerical disaster and their recent Singles compilation didn’t really do well.I have been a fan since i first heard Animal Nitrate way back in 93.I remember once reading an interview with Brett and he said he wanted to release five great Suede albums althought their recent albums Head Music and A New Morning were not exactly classics i still thought they were good albums.Their Self Titled debut and Dog Man Star albums are two of the best albums of the 90’s.I just thought the two new tracks on Singles Attitude and Love The Way You Love were ok.I thought they might have released another album after the Singles tour and then called it a day.

RIP Suede

Gotta disagree. To me Suede were a one trick pony in terms of their overall sound, image, and lyrical topics. I think their debut is great, and Dog Man Star a classic, but they just got boring after Bernard Butler left. Who knows, their solo stuff/collaborations might be far more interesting than their recent releases…

Bretts solo career will most probably bomb in a spectacular style, theres two Suede books coming out soon one is an offical book which is supposed to be a warts and all account of the band. There was rumours that they recently recorded demos with Jim Reid from The Jesus And Mary Chain.I hope sometime in the future they release a compilation similar to Sci-Fi Lullabies.

Depends on how you define success as in sales or his solo albums reception by the critics, but given that Brett is the singer and the most well know out of the current line its almost given he will be more ‘successful’.I just can’t imagine him as a chart act anymore he will always have the cult Suede audience to rely on to sell gig tickets.Simon or Matt might make it into his live band,Alex use to be in Strangelove who knows what he might do.Richard Oakes could embark on a solo career similar to Bernard Butlers.Speaking of Bernard i wonder what he thinks of the split?

Bernard said recently he regretted leaving Suede and was sorry he fell out with Brett. In last months Bang Brett was asked if the two of them would ever work again and he said he wouldn’t want to sully the reputation. But who knows they may work together again,Bernard was able to patch up his differences with McAlmont and work on another album.

Well, taking a break to concentrate on solo projects, doesn’t literally mean they split up. I think it will depend on the success of these projects whether they will come back together again, they might call this ‘due to popular demand’ then.
From an artistic point of view I think that it’s not such a disappointment (sorry to all true Suede lovers), Suede definitely belong in the ‘Bands That Get Gradually Worse’ thread, at least in my opinion.

Kinda surprising…
A New Morning wasn’t very good…but hey…every band releases something like that once in a while…I still give them a lot of credit.
Anderson should work with Johnny Marr. :D

Creep. Why not just say Bowie? ;)

Bowie has shown his good taste in music by covering The Pixies. So why should he work with Anderson? :)

And Johnny Marr should get Bernie to do another Electronic album instead of wasting his talent with Mr. Anderson.
Does this make me the second non-Suede fan in this thread?

Most definitely. Anderson deserves everything he gets though. He’s an idiot.

I think I may be starting to realise I’m actually the third non-Suede fan in this thread :p

Well, I feel it’s now my duty to band together the anti-Suede posse to laugh and say ‘ha-ha’ in a Nelson style voice. Suspect the reason you haven’t got a lot of non-Suede fans posting in this thread is because it’s about Suede ;)

I love Brett Anderson, he loves Bowie and really, that’s all it takes
Suede are wonderful, I love Dog Man Star
Bowie even invited them to tour with him which would have been the most amazin thing to see

I love Suede and I’m sad :(

I used to hate Suede at first too. Mainly because they where hyped like shit. (Good thing I don’t live in the U.K.) Underneath it…they write great songs…their B-sides are even better than their album tracks. :D

I’m just gonna deny too. :P

Denial, ain’t it a terrible thing?!

Face up to the fact - you ain’t ever going to see Suede live again until the day, if it comes, they reform ;)

On a positive note, they’re still doing their December tour, playing about two miles away from my house, and tickets are still available… :p

Around the time of Suedes first album was released Brett and Bowie were both interviewed and appeared on the NME cover,Bowie was very complimentary and suggested working on something with them he also wanted Suede to cover one of his songs but Brett didn’t think it was a good idea.

Heres a statement by Brett Anderson on the ‘split’

Posted: Sat Nov 08, 2003 12:49 pm Post subject: Statement from Brett

There’s obviously been a lot of emotion and rumours flying around over the last few days so I thought I’d try and set the record straight on a couple of things.
Firstly I’d like everyone to know that this decision was based purely on creative reasons.Personally I feel that the only way to escape the artistic dead end I have found myself in is to work at least for a while outside the band. There has been speculation about record sales and chart positions ,blah, blah, blah but the bottom line is I NEED TO DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET MY DEMON BACK.
I know that a lot of people will never be able to understand this. I’d like them to know that this is not a decision we have enterered into lightly and ask them to trust that ultimately the band know what is best for Suede.
Finally you should all know that we will remain good friends and that I can genuinely see us working together again. What we have done has been too special to just throw away.

Thanks for caring.

Brett

So it looks possible Suede could possibly reform/regroup in four to five years much like New Order did.

Heh, I enjoyed that purely cause Izzard used it in a video (think it was Glorious) and seemed very apt.

also, bad karma, with regards to pulp, as much as i would like it, i can’t forsee jarvis ever working under the “pulp” name again. although they’re on “hiatus”, i don’t think it’ll ever happen. no one bought “we love life” except me. and you presumably judging by your signature.

xxx

Yeah i bought it;)

Pulps greatest hits didn’t sell many copies either and Suedes Singles compilation only charted at 56 and then bombed out of the charts, but both albums might have an afterlife in years to come when people want to check these bands out.

Yeah it was the Bon Jovi piss take at the start - “I wanna be bigger than McDonalds”

When did Pulp split anyway?

Maybe you’ll find info in the split thread about Suede and Pulp splitting up.
I always thought this was what ‘spliz threads’ should be about :).

To get myself the status of a Suede-listener-but not-really-lover rather than being a non-Duede fan:
I love Addicted, though mostly because of the fantastic video with the marvellous John Hurt in it.
