How about Potato Junkie, Bad Mother, Not In Any Name, Church of Noise, etc. etc.? There’s a thread about the meaning of the lyrics of some songs, you can find the songs I just mentioned in that thread as well. It’s somewhere in the General Topics section.

in what way does six mile water refer to the Northern Ireland problem? i never thought it would be like that, just thought it was about the small town where andy and michael used to live and things like that.

I don’t think that song refers to any of ‘The Troubles’ as such its like you said just about where Andy and Michael gew up.

I don’t think any song is directly about the troubles, but these songs have obvious references: Bad Mother, 6 Mile Water & Potato Junkie.

Im sure there are more indirect references but I can’t think of any right now. I don’t think most people would even realise these references unless they knew what they are looking for.

god kicks is probably the only t? song that deals exclusively with the troubles. you won’t find a whole lot in bad mother or potato junkie - there’s only about one line of a reference in those songs.

And .. what about the album Infernal Love (1995).. the song Loose, has reference to northern ireland… diane and also 30 Seconds might be though to have Northern references…

But bloddy hell, all of Andy’s lyrics could be sugested to have northern relevance and understandablly so !! christ the’re all from up there ! its not suprising some of it rubbed of in the songs…

Diane definitely has no NI reference as it was written by Grant Hart from Minneapolis. It’s about a girl being raped and killed, so no political background.

I don’t know if it’s about the problems in NI spesifically, but…

Title: Six Mile Water

I’ve always found Six Mile Water for being about the conflict in Northern Ireland. A song about a country divided in two. “We come from across the border”
- The border between protestants and catholics?

Title: Shitkicker

I was just reading the proper lyrics for the first time, and i think this song sums up “the troubles” - the song made me think of these paramilitary “godfathers” (or whatever they call themselves) - i can just imagine someone like that saying i am “the king of this town”.
It would have made sense if the lyrics are related to this as towns like ballyclare and larne where the guys originally came from definately have those “types” - so does everywhere but i suppose it would be worse in a small town cause of the size difference, y’know? It would be more in your face.
But of course the song could be about something completely different

I found a live version of 6 mile water on my computer and in it Andy explains what Six Mile Water is all about.

“Its a song about Northern Ireland, but its not a preachy or political song. Its about a river called the 6 mile water that joined Michael’s house and my house whenever we where growing up and starting the band and whenever we get home sick we think about that place.”

I figured it was troubles related but obviously not.

I think you’re right, but it’s indeed possible to see it troubles-related; a second layer as in a lot of poems. The Irish are well-known for their poetry after all.

My last post on the subject was inspired by hearing that students from Queens university where being intimadated from a certain area by loyalist “paramilitaries” - for playing music too loud - that gives you the mentality of these people - i thought the words of Shitkicker would be the sort of things these people say when they made these threats.

As far as im aware its refers to a monthly event known as ‘International Charles Bukowski Meetup Day’ where people all across the world meetup and discuss their love for this guy who used to be a Beat Poet (til his death in 94). Some of his stuff is quite funny yet honest and you can really see Andy etc liking this guys crazy work.
