DEGRASSI - THE BAND - SUCK ASS

#

Started by Dermot (The Derm)

My mate told me Degrassi sucked and they sounded like a third - rate Iron Madien / Guns N’ Roses. We’e not curious about your band at all. Imagine coming onto a Therapy? site just to mouth off about your own band! Pathetic

Sjeez, relax dude.

Your first statement in your original post says exactly that you can tell by a band’s name that their lyrics are going to suck. This doesn’t make sense AT ALL.

I don’t think you said that a band SHOULD HAVE a name of at least two words, but you DID say that their lyrics can’t be good if the name is only one word. Read your post yourself man.

The lyrics of the three bands I mentioned do not suck. So, I proved you wrong. I thought you were good in discussing stuff with valid arguments. This post of yours was just stupid, so I had to react. Listen te Hellbelly. He’s right you know…

che was talking about the musical side of degrassi , i was wondering about the lyrical side of things. the name didnt give me much to ponder on. i DIDNT say the band sucked i was ONLY talking about the lyrics.
i DIDNT say that degrassi sucked because the had a one word name, That’s not even the issue. I said if you can’t come up with two to four words to come up with a VISION (did you all read that?) how are they going to write a song? do you guys get that? a VISION? if you use one word then excellent! but with more words you have more options. do you get it?
like most of the times you can tell by a band names how they’re lyrics are going to be. more often than not bands with good names will have good lyrics and more often a band’s name makes you wanna check out the band.
for example Janes addiction, that’s two words but a vision. Soundgarden that is sound and garden two words , that’s a vision. like therapy and a question mark , that’s a vision. rage against the machine , thats four words but it’s visionary but hootie and the blowfish is NOT. (remember i’m talking about coming up with a vision)
i hope degrassi doesnt think i’m ripping on his band. if there’s any advice i’d give it’s be change the name. you can always improve on the music later.
as for che and hellbelly please try again. i know how desperately you all wanna have a go at me but come on you can do better. and the same goes to you rene, maybe you should try to read before you respond.

We’re not out to have a go at you, it’s just that everyone at this site wants to point out each others mistakes. Your first reply sounded awfully like you meant that bands with one word names couldn’t come up with good lyrics. Your reply was in response to a message from Che saying that a freind had said that Degrassi suck. So we can see where the negative aspect comes from.
Teethgrinder mentioned a couple of one word bands which went against your theory of band names.
Then you start dissing us for not reading your posts!!! That was really cheap. We can read them fine. Maybe the problem isn’t in the reading.
And now we can all expect a A4 size response disputing the fact that we can read.

I agree with Hellbelly here. It seems like you always react to posts with a feeling that people are against you. I just thought you’re initial post was weird to say the least, and I reacted to that, NOT because it was you. I still disagree with your statement that a band’s name and lyrics are related to eachother. That really doens’t make sense. Therapy and a questionmark a vision. Puhlease. Sure, a band name can make you curious about their music, but it doesn’t relate to their lyrics by definition at all. Also not ‘more often than not’, like you said. Before you accuse me of not reading again.

The remark that I should start reading your posts is stupid and cheap. I do read your posts, otherwise I couldn’t and wouldn’t react to them. Don’t act like we’re all too stupid to read. That pisses me off.

Oh, and ‘…change the name. you can always improve on the music later.’ LOL. That makes sense.

hellbelly how thick is your skull? read this. teethgrinder if i am correct implied that therapy? , metallica , megadeath are all bad names but have good lyrics. am i right rene? (i think i am)
but you thought that he said that therapy?, metallica and megadeath are all good names and that rene was saying that i was saying that all bands with one names suck. even rene admits he wasnt implying that. (am i correct rene?)
so there you go like the insecure person that you are you thought it would be a good moment to jump in but you ended up lookng like a complete idiot.
and to stick to my original comments what i said does not mean in any way that bands with one name suck. maybe your comprehension level is very low (if that’s the case i forgive you). you could ask language experts to come here and they’ll tell you the same thing. ever taken a basic logic or philosophy class? it’ll tell you the same thing - YOU ARE WRONG.
admit it you just wanted to jump in but made an idiot of yourself.
and to stick to my main point: i’ve come up with this observation that bands that have thought provoking names will have a lot to say in thier lyrics- thier lyrics will have substance. you can agree or disagree. if you cant come up with a good name for your band you’ll have a hard time with the lyrics. all the bands that i think of that have good names have substance in their lyrics. i see a connection and i stated it. but if you disagree just say so but to say that i am wrong is bullshit because there’s no right or wrong here because they’re just observations.
and here’s an example. i dont know crave release or degrassi but if they were both playing the same night i’d go see crave release because thier name just pulls me to that direction. just an example.
by the way i dont think anyone is against me but sure a lot of people will like to have a go. try again.

and beleive me band names are important or people wouldnt spend time on it. therapy? is once again very unique. so is metallica - a unique name. they both have substance in their lyrics.
i think there’s a connection somehow.
but if you think all those names above are shit then i respect that. it’s your opinion and we shouldnt be arguing.
what really pissed me off was the way certain people jumped in… haha try again.

hey ronald it’s an observation i’ve made over the years. i’ve been going to record stores over the years and checking out all kinds of bands. i see some with names that kinda like make me laugh so i always check the lyrics and they dont have much in them no depth etc.
and i’ve checked out all these bands that have thought provoking names and their lyrics have substance , they have depth.
which made me think if you cant come up with a decent name then you’ll have a hard time with the lyrics because a song is so many words. i mean if rage against the machine sang backstreetboys lyrics well then they wouldnt be sincere or they would be just an exception to my observation. ( but they have great lyrics)
but by all means if you think degrassi is a good name then by all means think so. i wont argue with that.
rene- che said his mate said degrassi were a third rate iron maiden guns n roses type band. if that is indeed that case i can only imagine what they lyrics will be like. and that’s why i said they can always improve on the music because they’re third rate iron maiden , guns and roses. but if that’s the stuff you like then by all means i’m not stopping you.
just get this- it’s an observation i made , there’s no right or wrong in it.

I really don’t think the name of a band has much bearing on their lyrics. Take for example:

* Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet - Good name, good lyrics.
* Who Is The Girl in the Red Dress and Why Does She Keep Calling Me Andrew? - Pretty damn creative name, pretty lame lyrics.
* Foo Fighters - Not the best of names, but some good lyrics.
* Smoking Popes - Great name, but weak lyrics. They’re quirky and semi-creative, but not too deep.
* Fury In The Slaughterhouse - A borderline. Sometimes I think it’s a hokey death-metal sounding name, other times I think it’s good. Same with the lyrics for the most part. However, they are Germans writing English lyrics, which I can imagine might be difficult.
* Smashing Pumpkins - When you think about it, a pretty crappy name. Great lyrics though.
* Our Lady Peace - Hate the name (hate the music too), but I suppose the lyrics are deep. They’re not too crafty at naming albums either: ‘Happiness is not a fish you can catch’ for example.

So many bands pick names from seemingly arbitrary sources. Some might just take the name of a movie (Sleeper), some random object (Shoenen Knife) or a person (Mookie Blaylock). Oddly enough, Matthew Good has said that he hates the fact that the Matthew Good Band is named after him. The band just had to print up a record label quickly and once they became popular, it was just too hard to change.

I’ve heard bands with great lyrics and poor music. I’ve heard bands with great music and really lame lyrics. There’s no rule that says you need to pick a band that has both, because sometimes that can be a rare thing. And finally, lyrics, music and names are so subjective that they really can’t have that much impact on one another.

smashing pumpkins is an excellent name. just like when i read the lyrics of all these great bands i go ok this makes sense i know how they got such a name the lyrics are great. it’s a way with words.
like joy division - excellent name , ian curtis was a poet. and there are many other examples so on so on.
names are important it depends how good you are with words. it shows in the lyrics too.

Firstly you are talking a huge amount of fabricated shite, mentioning Maiden & Gn’R. Secondly you asked why a band should mention a band on another band’s site? Well that’s why I went into ‘non-therapy? related topics’, you fucking metalhead moron! If you don’t want to read something, just flick right past it…it’s really quite simple. (Which I’m sure is a term probabley in the brainless metal heckler’s job description). Saying something on a message board is simply freedom of speech. Not all bands are born with silver spoons up their asses, so they have to get their ‘plugs’ from other sources to get their name around. If that offends you, then good. you’ve made my day.

Mike - Before you start mouthing off to some people here, get your facts straight. You also posted messages in other sections besides the non-therapy related one, which are not here for that purpose. And don’t give me that freedom of speech crap. Sure, I support freedom of speech in every way, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use the board as it was meant to be, being divided into very clear topics.

Yes Mr. Teethgrinder point taken and digested without bitterness. I just failed to see, at the time how a band ‘plug’ would offend people. You have to admit, it’s a lot less depressing than reading messages by a bunch of folk who all like the same band and yet do little else but slag each other off. I understand perfectly that the board was broken divided different sections. Sometimes bands who don’t break rules don’t get noticed. Don’t worry my friend there need not be any more ‘non-therapy’ related band plugs for a while. Thank you for offering your opinion.

Yes ‘Teethgrinder’ I take your point. Essentially writing, typing or saying something without censorship is freedom of speech. I was not trying to be pretentious, by refering to any messages as an exercise of that. Is it really that offensive, however for any band to ‘plug’ gigs and events on another band’s message board? Surely if that band shares similar tastes to most of the people who post on it, then there is effectively some common ground there and no ill intentions whatsoever. If Therapy? fans (and I am one too), want to police the message board as if it were their household possesion, then that is up to them. I just don’t think it says alot for Irish and the UK music scene if we are all too busy biting each other’s backs and trying to belittle each other under false names.

Mike, I wasn’t commenting on the fact that you were plugging your band on this message board. My beef was that you were doing it in almost every section of the board. For these kinds of messages (not related to T?) this section of the board was created. I’d appreciate if you’d use the right sections for your messages.

Good luck with your band. If you start making money, what’s my share? Cheers.
