Nirvana

Obviously Nirvana are still big, which is a bit odd considering its nearly ten years, but i was wondering if any of you people still listen too them. I was a big fan when i was younger, i listen to incesticide and bleach now andthink there is some great songs particularly “big cheese” from bleach. But i cant buy that “most important rock band ever” stuff that was on the tv when they brought out that greatest hits collection , a bit OTT perhaps?
But definately i love a lot of their songs.

Well I’m 18 years old but I still listen to Nirvana. I don’t own much of their records (Nevermind, In Utero & Unplugged in NY) and I believe they have made some really good music. I don’t know what it was like to really grow up with Nirvana, but after all those years, well they’re still immortal…

I still listen to Nirvana, they were one of the first bands I got into (along with Ugly Kid Joe and Guns ‘n’ Roses :D) and they really were bloody fantastic, no denying it.

I don’t think they were the greatest band in the world and if Kurt was still alive I doubt they’d be held in such high regard, but they shouldn’t be slated for being popular.

I think they’ve always been over-rated. Kurt Cobain was a fuck-up idiot, and their best music is heavily influenced by other bands (i.e. The Pixies)…

I appreciate what they did for the music industry more than the music they released. Kurt NoBrain wrote some good songs, but they were never THAT good in my opinion.

Still, without Nirvana, T? would have been less likely to get a deal with a major label, and without a major label deal there’d be less of us into T?…

I agree they did do a lot of good for the genre as a whole, and a lot of bands (and fans) benefited from their success. It’s a shame that’s the way it is though, one band get the right marketing and suddenly every label in town jumps on the bandwagon (Limp Bizkit>Papa Roach>Linkin Park etc)

important rock band? not the most important, but they opened alot of doors for good music, they made punk “cool” again.

thin lizzy and led zep would probably deserve that title…

You own a copy of a Nirvana album don’t you? So do about 40 million other people. Of course that’s not trendy ;) It’s like those people at an Offspring gig singing along with “I’m not a trendy asshole, do what I want, do what I feel like”… well, you’re following the lead of the band, so.. I’m not having a dig, I’m just stating a point.

@hooch. I agree. I’m so annoyed that any rock band with a DJ and a rapper has a much better chance of getting signed than one without.

I still listen to Nirvana every now and again,i mainly just listen to bootlegs.I think if Cobain was still around today Nirvana would probably have been seen as one hit wonders,i don’t think In Utero would have been as successful as it has without his suicide.Nirvana would probably have followed the same career paths as SoundGarden and the Smashing Pumpkins etc and split up,maybe Cobain might have released a solo album like Evan Dandos.

i like nirvana though have to agree with other people here that they are still over-rated by a lot of people. having said that, i didn’t get into them until “in utero” and the whole seattle “grunge” thing was never that appealing to me anyway. i very rarely listen to them at all now. as for the legend of kurt (or is it curt, i can never remember), to be honest, and i’ll probably get in trouble here for saying this, i think he was a good frontman and that but he was a bit of a bastard to commit suicide and leave his wife and baby daughter to deal with it. and don’t start with that conspiracy theory stuff…

well people, in my humble little opinion, i think nirvana piss all over every band of the last 10 years. When a defunct band can release a track (you know you’re right) 8 years after they split and STILL make everything else sound poor you KNOW they’re pretty special. I think the music world is a sorrier place without them.

it’s kinda ironic that the music that was written against all those popular and cool kids is now loved by most of those kids though they don’t know what it is all about
i hate it when they play “smells …” in dancings(often with destiny’s child dubbed over it) and everyone goes wild and stuff but no one knows what that song means

Agreed. I think he was a completely self-absorbed weirdo with little regard for the effect his suicide would have on his kid, wife, bandmates, and impressionable fans.

Strange to think he was my hero when I was a fifteen.

We used to piss on each other ‘s favorite band… but I have to admid I’ve always respected Nirvana. I don’t think they were overrated back then, but they are now. I’m in the mid 20’s so grew up with this band (thanks to a cool uncle who also got me into Dead kennedys ramones pixies stiff little fingers and loads of other good stuff).
I had a ticket for the rds in dublin for that european tour and was WELL pissed off when he shot himself (he was found the day the concert was to take place) . I took up guitar after hearing them and learned NEVERMIND track by track so i can thank them for that. I think cobain had problems and suicide is selfish but i dont know what demons the guy had or invented or whatever so can’t comment. Just glad i was there at the time cause they kinda soundtracked my teenage years. Agree with the guy who said “you know your right” is better than most stuff that came out in the last 10 years it would suggest they were special allright. Hope they relaease more of this stuff cause there’s shitloads of it.

A friend of mine had a framed ticket for a gig in wales ( fucked if I can remember what venue it was ) which was the actual day he did himself in, I’m guessing the Dublin gig was scheduled for the day after? He was offered over £400 for it by a collector but wouldn’t part with it. I do wonder if he hadn’t shot himself if Nirvana would simply be a relic of a bygone age, a bit like Pearl Jam became?

I can appreciate Nirvana a lot more now than when they first came out, it’s odd how you can get into bands more when the hyberboyle dies down a bit, you end up listening more to the music than journalistic opinion.
