What distortion units do have?

#

Started by marksims

Hi all!!

I have a Proco Rat 2 distortion pedal going through a Digitech RP200 multi-effects processor. The distortion I get is just EVIL with some of the amp settings. I am careful not to overdo it as too much gain and you ever muddy sound territory.

I did have a Danelectro Daddy-O overdrive but it was too tinny, not enough balls if you know what I mean. As soon as I found the RAT I was in love!!!

Keep jamming folks, T? rocks!!!

Mark.

i use one old bass tech from ibanez (for middle frequencies distorted parts) and the bass overdrive boss pedal, which is totally great … you can really have your individual setting for bass frequencies and trebles …

i think mike uses that too, al least i know that he was using it a couple of years ago …

Cheers

my set up is a bit simpler these days, less and less fx.

gibson sg junior thru a peavey(which is not very good)
fx - marshall drivemaster (old but hard as nails)
- phaser set on slow, sometimes in studio i use a cheap zoom 505 for odd delay sounds.
also use a dunlop wah wah.

What i love most is my ebow, it is tricky to get the hang of but to simulate cello’s or violins it the dogs bollox.
Combine that with a slide and you have a very cool sound.

I run a lead from fx out on the amp into the PA which
gives a nice grind and loads of low end growl. Thankfully it keeps things defined for tight rythm.

I also a yamaha sbv bass, love the body shape.

I have an Epiphone LP 100 (a cheaper Les Paul cos it’s not got pick-up plates) which I play through a Marshall Park Series G50R CD. I just use the footpedal that comes with it to distort the signal. I did want to get a wah pedal, like maybe the Crybaby, but I didn’t get one when I had the cash (d’oh - I spent the money on booze) and now I’m too skint.

I’ve also got the Boss Bass Overdrive pedal, which I’ve still got from my bass-playing days. It’s actually quite good to use if I want to enhance harmonics, because my current guitar and amp don’t play them very well.

I use a Boss multi effect machine with which I wasn’t too pleased, but recently I managed to get a good distortion out of it. That and a very old (guitar) Morley wah adds a lot to my bass sound when I need it.

Sadly, as I just moved back to the UK from the US I only have 2 old amps to play them through. :(

I’ve just tried out the new Digitech X-series Death Metal pedal and by god its fuzzy, I played the intro to Screamager on it and the windows shook in the shop!!!! I was in there with my girlfriend and she was looking through some flute music when I played it, she hit the floor!!! HEHEHE!!!!

Evil sounds, we like that.

Love and respect!!

Title: Distortion

I bought a bc rich guitar a few weeks back and i was blown away by the difference the humbucker pick-ups made to the distortion from my amp. My original guitar has single coils so i think i will change the bridge pick- up to a humbucker, because i find the bc rich to be too “small” for me to play comfortably but i suppose i might get used to it. And i think people see them as being very cheesy too!
The best pedal i remember hearing was a Boss “Heavy metal” my bro had some years ago, but i havent seen them for sale for years, i must try and track one down.

I haven’t, because my sound is great and I use the units I mentioned earlier in this thread. I read about it on the Sansamp site and I wonder why you want to buy it. It all depends on what you have already and on what you want with your sound. So, tell me more.

Sure, I have a basic solid-state amp, and the only effects I (infrequently) use are my old guitar effects, none of which really ‘do it’ for me, so I’m looking for a ‘tone fix’. I’m not particularly interested in getting any full on distortion, though if what I get manages that as well, then all the better. I’m interested in building up a strong core tone, and want to avoid the route I followed when I was still a regular guitar player, which was to mess around with lots of different effects (coming up with some cool whacked out sounds, but nothing I could ‘call my own’ ;)). I’m not interested in whether the sound I get is an accurate emulation of a particular amp (so buying a bass POD seems a bit pointless), but I’d like something that I can DI, which the Bass Driver obviously can.
Umm, anything else you want to know?

I think what you pointed out is almost exactly what the Sansamp Bass Driver does. The best thing though, is to ask a store to try it for a week or two. If they don’t agree and tell you to buy it or leave it, send an e-mail to the Sansamp company.

Yes, I should probably do that, though my local guitar shop doesn’t stock them. They said they could order one for me, but they kind of implied (through threats and obscene hand gestures) that they could order one _if_ I wanted to buy it… I’m short of the cash at the moment, anyway, so there’s no hurry, whatever I do. Whereas there would be if I had the money, obviously. ;)

Thanks for your views, by the way

Problem is that most stores only want to sell and don’t think about keeping customers happy. The least they can do is offer you the possibility to try the damned thing in their shop, in a seclusive room with your own bass and similar amp, for as long as you want. As far as I have experienced, this is normal where I live. Try to make a deal like this.

Well, I know that they would do that with something that they actually had in stock, but they don’t want to go to the trouble of ordering something in specially, unless they were pretty sure they were going to sell it, I suppose. I’ll see if I can work something out with them when I actually have the money, though.

And if they won’t co-operate, don’t buy the damned thing and try it somewhere else.
It’s always the same with those lousy music stores. They think they own the world and push you to buy gear and stuff you don’t want, and if there’s something wrong with the equipment, it’s always your own fault! I can’t think of any musician who didn’t have these problems.

I’ve never had any probem from the local Belfast music shops-in fact, they’ve all been really enjoyable to visit. Awww.

I use a Gibson Voodoo V (Yes, a GIBSON VOODOO V!- I love my guitar:)) through a Daelectro Black Paisley and then through a GuitarPort, into my Dad’s laptop, into my horribly bad PA head, to my mystery 20 year Carlsburg cabinet, with the torn speaker hanging out of the Cab and sounding fantasic! God bless you, Line 6. Now, I’ll need to buy a new speaker…

Who needs distorsion pedals? Just crank your amp up (overdrive it), mic it to a shed (or some other wooden building that´s not that stable), tear the speaker (for that fuzz), and let rip. I suppose it helps if you put a 700watt peavey through 200watt speakers (jejeje). I´ll need some new ones soon…

Ibane Tube Screamer, DOD American Metal (if it still works), a BOSS GT-3 multi-effects processor (piece of crap, impossible to program), and the BOSS OD-20 Drive Zone, which is basically every BOSS distortion pedal in one with the knobs to tweak it properly..unlike the pain in the butt GT-3.
