two manic street preachers in the top ten. all good stuff. this poll hasn’t actually finished yet so it could change. wouldn’t it be great if james was number 1?

he got my vote too, it would be really great if james would win, though that Aneurin Bevan dude seems very popular, who ever he may be

Its nice to see James get some attention for a change normally its Nicky or Richey who are the focus.

Aneurin Bevan was a politician who helped set up the National Health Service.

What’s Richey Edwards doing on there?

Who’s he ever inspired? Apart from fucked-up self-harming teenagers? Come on, the guy is/was way short of “hero” status…

Well he did write some rather good lyrics.

Writing a few song lyrics hardly qualifies him as a “hero” though, does it? Dylan Thomas wrote some great literature, and he’s not even in the top ten.

And Tom Jones?! What the fuck?! Here’s a man who’s had several extra-marital affairs, a ridiculous amount of plastic surgery, and too many sessions on the sunbed, and yet he’s now classed as a Welsh hero. Jesus.

Says more about the Welsh than anything else.

What makes someone a hero and what does this poll say about the welsh?

The poll implies that the Welsh don’t have any proper heroes, and so have to make do with jokers like Tom Jones and Richey Edwards.

I think the poll shows that in our celebrity-obsessed society we as a whole worship idiots like David Beckham and other fake idols (like the Pop Idol stuff), who do absolutely fuck all to make this world better while ignoring people out there making a difference like doctors, soldiers, aid workers and the few honest politicians we still have left.

When someone like Tom Jones dies, there will be mourning by his fans, there will be stories all over the news, public memorials, etc etc. If a doctor spends his entire life helping cancer patients and dies, noone apart from his friends and family will give a shit.

And that’s the sad truth.

I think these types of polls are really just popularity contests.I don’t know if there are many heros around today in our society nevermind just Wales.Every year our society seems to become more and more obsessed with celeb culture.
