best support band (past and/or present)

#

Started by not_that_kind_of_guy (a story on the radio)

right, i know most people don’t bother watching support bands at gigs, but on the rare occasions when you do, which support band and at which gig most impressed you?

for me it was the cooper temple clause supporting muse back on the origin of symmetry tour. i didn’t want to watch them (i had heard nothing by them at that point and was more interested in the bar) but they were most impressive.

anyone else?

There are a few of bands I can think of that I saw and liked as support acts a long time ago and subsequently became quite big; Placebo supporting Whale and Skunk Anansie supporting Killing Joke spring to mind.

Am sure I’ve seen many a great support in my time but unless they made it big or I managed to find a release fairly soon after then I’ve forgotten them :(

Godsmack supporting Metallica

Although these guys are already pretty big in the States I think, I only bothered to listen to them since I saw them in Hannover last December… but their albums are fucking brilliant ;)

Title: Manic street preachers

I have a Manics NME special magazine and in one section it mentions that they where supporting Therapy? in a tour of europe, shortly before yer man richey took off, i suppose that would have an interesting gig. Apparently Andy french kissed Richey at some point, which would have been a bizarre sight no doubt.
Someone told me last night that Anthrax could be supporting Metallica when thay play here in June with slippity Knot, so that shall make it all worthwhile if its true.

Some great sounding gigs there - I mean Killing Joke supporting Joy Division… you lucky, lucky man!

The best support band for me was british sea power, seeing as I went to see them and not the headliners.

I went to see Keith Caputo of ex-Life of Agony fame supporting Travis. I left after I saw him. It was OK, but he was clearly too drunk and nervous.

Still, it was better than Travis :)

Megadeth supporting Metallica back in ‘92 was pretty cool, to say the least!

Some other support bands I enjoyed that come to mind right now are Suicidal Tendencies, Godsmack, Down By Law and Tacker. I pretty much always watch the support bands when I go to a gig, you never know what you’ll discover!
