I prefer the Nirvana version, though there’s something kind of compelling about listening to a Leadbelly CD. He sings so low, it’s sort of hypnotic, and Where Did You Sleep Last Night? is the last song on the cd that I have.

And you?

No, not a fan, but I do love those really old blues songs, so I have quite a collection of stuff like that.

Have any of you heard Mark Lanegan’s version on his first solo album, THE WINDING SHEET.
It was was originally supposed to be a side project with KURT COBAIN, but Nirvana were just starting to make a name for themselves and KURT couldn’t commit to it full time, so he just did some guitars and backing vocals on the album instead.

He actually did the guitar work for this track on the album.
It’s where he got the idea to play it on Nirvana’s UNPLUGGED album.

The version on THE WINDING SHEET very like Nirvana’s version, only done with electric guitars.

Why is everyone raving on about Mark Lanegan’s solo work when no-one notices the gems he procreated with the Screaming Trees?

Ah! Yes…

It was the SCREAMING TREES that I first started listening to. Then found out about his solo albums. His solo stuff is good, but very mellow. His best album is “I’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU” which is an album of cover versions. Not even his own stuff.

To be honest! SCREAMING TREES are much better than Marks solo stuff. But that is mostly because of his bandmates, LEE and VAN CONNOR who wrote most of the music.
SWEET OBLIVION and DUST are 2 of my favourite albums of all time. They are up there with “TROUBLEGUM” and “SUICIDE PACT - YOU FIRST” as far as I’m concerned.

And lets not forget about QUEENS OF THE STONEAGE. The few songs he’s been involved with from them are excellent. Especially IN THE FADE from “RATED R”.
