Preferred Plectrums?

#

Started by always_drunk

Ok, I know i’m a newbie to this board so i should start an interesting discussion about a slightly bigger piece of musical equipment in the hope that people get to know me quicker. Unfortunately i have spent all weekend using my new favourite plectrum and have now decided to switch to this brand instead of my usual.

I have been using Jim Dunlop .73’s for a long time now and had found them to be best for my style of playing (the only drawback being that i have a grey carpet so if i drop them i can lose them for days).

But last Friday i went to see Senser play at Barfly. They played a fantastic set and i their guitarist was outstanding. At the end of the set i was at that side of the stage so i applauded his riffage and he shook my hand. Inside his hand was a PickBoy 070.

At first i thought it was a much heavier pick because its quite thick and has ridges to prevent it dropping out of sweaty gig hands. Its just as good as the .73’s i am used to but i haven’t dropped it once.

Do any other people use this type of plectrum or have a brand that they have remained loyal to for a long time?

Couldn’t find the 070 but the 100 looks the same anyway.

What a cool thread, why did no one think of this before?! :)

When I play guitar I stick with the basic Gibson picks that you can buy just about anywhere. Prefer the equilateral shaped ones, and either medium or heavy. Oh, and I used to use these really cool transparent purple picks that were ridiculously chunky, but with curved edges front to back. They had a really cool attack, but it was almost impossible to play more than three strings at once with ;) I seem to have lost those now. When playing bass (which I mostly stick to now) , I use my fingers. Here are my two favourites: ;)

I usually use the yellow .73 mm Jim Dunlop, but they keep disappearing against my white (grey, really) floorcarpet.

I shall look into getting a 070 Pickboy.

Use green Dunlop Tortex .88 for guitar and blue Dunlop Tortex 1.0 for bass (or fingers - depends what i’m playing and how lazy i feel)

Found one of those chunky purple picks. It was a Jim Dunlop ‘Big Stubby’ (got to love that name) They were 3mm thick.

used to use one of those for bass - but they do about as much good to the strings as Ron Atkinson does to race relations…

I haven’t found a bass pick that i favour yet. might try one of those PickBoy 100’s.

I thought i’d get a slagging for this thread at first but then i realised that plectrums are the least talked about part of guitar equipment but are still really important.

I’ll try to limit my drunk 6 a.m. postings though. ;)

Its not the kind of things those guitar shop types sit round chatting about… but it is surprising how peoples tastes vary.

There is a guitar shop nearby that ‘invented’ the round plectrum - a plastic circle with a hole in that looks like a washer… it is supposed to improve your grip but cant ever remember this being an issue for myself.

Just remembered I’ve got this new really weird one. It’s three different thicknesses, depending on which edge you use, and has a point on it for pinched harmonics, plus a sort of jagged edge, which makes chords jangle a bit more. And a thing for getting stones out of horses’ hooves.

its not one of those ‘sharkfin’ style ones is it? I saw that and thought Wow - got to have one - till i tried to use it and found that they were, infact, useless!

Umm, it _might_ be… It does look a bit like a shark-fin, but I’ve seen others that also look like that, and aren’t nearly so comprehensive. I can however confirm that it is in fact useless.

I wonder what happens to stray plectrums… i mean - socks go missing in washing machines, but they aren’t lost - we all know they are stuck to the drum with static…

but plectrums… I must have bought hundreds and they just bloody vanish! strange?

Plectrum heaven?

Most probably they got to the stray picks home. If no one collects them, they’re given to Status Quo. That’s right, they get put down down, deeper and down.

Yeah - you might get the chance to host blankety blank or something!

I’ve got a 3.0 mm Jim Dunlop “Big Stubby” for my bass, but I don’t tend to use it. Just my (now calloused) fingers.

Btw, did anyone here get really bad blisters when they first started playing their instruments? I used to have blisters and green scabs for months. Ouch.

i saw a fantstic picture of the thumb belonging to the guy from Crowded House. He had taken off a whole load off skin because the tour was so long and his thumb was just red and bleeding, it looked really painful but he said he made some replacement skin every night using a mix of Vinegar and Super Glue. don’t fancy that myself.

I use the Big Stubby for bass. I have HORRIBLE control if I try to play with my fingers- pops every note (not good). For guitar… depends what I’m playing, but the grey dunlops are fairly standard, so that’s what I tend to stick to. Or gibson mediums, because they came with my guitar.

The guitarist in my band only ever uses the tiny little plectrums, like the type used for jazz lead, except he’s playing ‘So much for the 10 year plan’ etc. with them- he won’t use normal sized picks for anything.

Also, I never for caluses (damn my spelling!) on my fingers. Even after 6 years of playing guitar, acoustic, bass… even double bass, my fingers are still pretty soft, but I’m used to it, and it doesn’t hurt anymore.

I use either a thick purple Jim Dunlop pick of a heavy Fender pick I bought months ago. I also got hold of the new Pickboy carbon nylon picks and tried them for a bit, but they felt strange when picking if you know what I mean!

I did have a 3mm stubby a while back but gave up with it, it made my thumb cramp!!!

Back to my les paul then…

seeya!!

When I play my 12-string guitar, which is seldom, I use a JD .60 mm.

I usually play bass however and prefer the index and middle fingers. Sometimes though I use a strange pick/plectrum with three different thicknesses similar to the one Misanthropologist descibed. It’s been ‘in the family’ for 17 years now and will probably become an heirloom.

I recently put a clause in my will which says that any - yet to point out - bass player who’s lost the index and/or middle finger of the right hand, can have mine. That is after I’m dead, off course.

Title: Prefered plectrums

To be quite honnist, i use any old plectrum. However, i don’t always use 1. I tend to find it easy to finger pick when it comes to picking the strings. I only use the plectrum for strumming.

One of my picks could never be used as an heirloom- I grind them away until they’re unplayable in days! Anyone else get this problem? Its also worn away the finish on my guitar above the pickgaurd, and the pickgaurd itself is pretty badly scratched up. Ah, well.

Not usually, though I do have an ‘heirloom’ of sorts: it was an almost new pick, and I played one Cradle of Filth song (from vempire, don’t remember the names anymore) and when I’d finished, the pick was a centimetre shorter and there were bits of plastic ‘dust’ over everything. Was pretty crazy (imagine the pickboy pictured above, with the tip shaved off to where you can see the grip. From one song.)

But normally I’m not that heavy handed. Swear. :)

I got a pick from the guitar player with The Misfits (Dez from Black Flag) at the Limelight the other night. He uses those black Jim Dunlops. I like those too, but I’ve recently discovered their ‘Riffs’ collection, and despite the fruitty colours, could become my plectrum of choice.
