Kits of the World

#

Started by Fordonian

After looking at the other posts I could find by using the search and putting in “kits” I thought;

1. No one really seems to have talked of their own kits, yet other gear gets discussed such as distortion units and whatnot.

2. Yet in other threads alot of people do seem to enjoy “talking shop” so why dont we do that eh?

Thus I hatched a plan to start this and ask what kits people have and any other bits and bobs about them which may be interesting. Then I had a third thought, oh yes, a third;

3. Even though we’re talking drums and its on the Therapy? board, lets try to avoid getting side tracked and the names Fyfe, Graham and Neil being in the same post, especailly when “better” and “worse” come up too. Please? :)

What does anyone else think? Should we begin?

Cool! This is my machine of neighbour annoyance and I’ve spent more of my student loan on it than anything for uni and it feels good!

Yamaha Oak Custom (Blue Ridge Blue Oak)
22” X 17” Bass Drum 2 - because its more metal that way!
10” X 9” Tom
12” X 10” Tom
14” X 12” “Floor” Tom - its mounted of a cymbal stand but its down on the right.
14” X 5” Snare- Oak in blue ridge as well.

Cymbals;
Zildjians-
22” Z Custom Ride
18” A series Rock Crash
17” A Custom Crash
18” Z Custom China
10” A Series Splash
10” K Series Splash
9” Trash Splash
14” Z custom(top)/A mastersound hats.
12”/14” Oriental Trash Hats

Pearl hardware including a pair Eliminators for the BD’s
Protection Racket cases
Oh I use Ahead sticks quite a bit but not all the time.

I’ve seen and messed around in shops with Tama hardware but I just stuck with pearl because it was the first brand I bought and I like to have it all matching, oh and its good stuff too. Quite like the idea of the Tama series that leans in towards the drummer- nice idea and it looks cool.

I’d say try a Z Custom for ting and ping- they’ve got tonnes. The only problem with mine is because its a 22” and so heavy, it takes a while to respond and get the wash going unless I really lay into it but then it doesn’t want to stop :)

I tune my 10” tom a little higher aswell but not nealy high enough to get that Fyfe sound- I do want a second snare that I can crank right up though, but I can’t afford it at the moment and I’m not sure exactly what to go for.

Mmm, I don’t know much about drums, exept the fact that I (being a bassist) have been playing with some very good drummers over the years.
The one I’m playing with right now has a Sonor kit with a 20” kick with double pedals, a ‘regular’ snare, five toms from high to low (I don’t know the sizes) and some good copperware, including a chinaman. Most important fact though: he’s a great and inventive drummer to play with; he makes me a better bassist.

Yeah the bassist in my band has got me doing things I’ve not tried before (in a musical sense!) and I feel I’ve improved alot for it. It good when that happens.

I once jammed with a bassist who was obsessed with Dream Theatre and it just didn’t work. That’ll be the other end of he spectrum then.

Oh and if your kit, or your drummer’s kit was an animal, what would it be? No ignore that, I’m drunk.

Thats another thing on my list for kit expansion- another tom. I want to put an 18” X 18” floor tom on it but everyone I’ve said that to thinks its a silly idea and I should get an 8” mounted one- fools! I want a evil meaty bugger for double stops and rolls like thunder :D

Other stuff I want would definately by more cymbals- some more ‘off the beaten track’ ones like swishes and to mess about with putting rivets in stuff. Oh and lots more chinas because I love ‘em! :)

It doesn’t seem that basic- standard number of tubs maybe but its an export so at least you know the drums are good. Also seems like a good selection and amount of cymbals. I think the for that price you got a very good deal! 2 or 3 of the cymbals would cost more than that new! My ride and 17” crash come to more than that. Actually- you got a very, very good deal! :)

My first kit cost £150 second hand and it showed- I think the make was “Linko” and it came with “Made in Taiwan” stickers! Rock!

Very light too- the 14” floor tom off the Oak kit weighs about the same as the bass drum from the first kit which was 22” X 16”- probably basswood at that level.

Oh yeah and the first thing I bought for it was a Pearl double pedal and that cost £175. That pedal has only just retired- lasted about 8 or 9 years. Sort of shows the kit eh? Well, at least the kit makes me appreciate the Oak beasty!

My self, my first kit was a tama swing star with 22 x 16 inch bass drum, 12, 13 and 16 inch toms, and a premier 14 inch snare drum, with solar by sabian cymbals. The whole lot cost me 260 pounds. It was good, but nothing beets Mapex!

As for adding additional drums. I wouldn’t listen to people who think that adding an 18 inch tom is silly. I’v egot an 8 and an 18 inch toms and no one sais i’m silly. You can have as many drums and cymbals as you want and to hell with what the people say.

Yeah, the 18” will kick ass. The main thing that was said was about the “jump” in size between what’ll be the floors- 14” X 12” to an 18” X 18”. But they dont get it- thats what I want!! Its a meaty beast of a drum! Just wish I had the cash- well, my last ever student loan payment comes in at the end of April :D

Hmmm…maybe I’ll get it, maybe…

Hay saten. I know you would probably quash the idea, but whynot buy a 16 x 13 inch suspended floor tom, and then when it comes to an 18 inch tom, move your 14 inch tom up next to the 12 inch rack tom.

When i ordered my 18 inch floor tom, i did the same trick that i’m suggesting to you. Believe me, if you position the tom correctly, you can hit it propally!

Nah, I wouldn’t quash it- I can see what your saying but I dont know if I’d do it myself. The way I mine setup is so that my china is right above the right hand bass drum (Lars Ulrich rip-off I know) just for the muscle memory aspect of thinking “Snare and china, now! BANG!!!” and having it nice and noisey! I also like to use the china for riding quite a bit when hammering the bass drums. And I (probably quite sadly) think it looks cooool! :D

I may try it out though and mess around with the setup- after all, why not?

Looking at your setup though man- it must be a massive bank of toms! :D And as we all know you can never have too many drums and cymbals eh?

Ah, drums… :)

I know you and Ratamahatta both love the Mapex but I’ll tell you the Yammy’s still kick ass!!!

That’s true enough.

My amount of toms isn’t much, just 6 toms and 2 snare drums.

Myself, i couldn’t afford a second bass drum, so i’m consintrating on the cymbal front.

Cymbals to come.

1, 6 inch splash recent addition.
2, 12 inch oriantle china trash splash with 6 inch a custom splash on top.
a zilbell cymbal 9.5 inches.
18 inch a custom china.

I might add a second pair of high hats later.

Well six toms is twice the number I have! :)
Actually, two snares is aswell!

Yeah, Ive got a cymbal addiction- I’ve not actually got enough stands for cymbals anymore so when its birthday and Christmas time and people say “We don’t know what to get you!” I just give them a Pearl catalogue with certain things circled and send ‘em to the shops!

I’m torn between getting a 20” Oriental China or an A series one- I really like both of them but money constraints and all that. I think I need at least two more crashes aswell! Wheres that lottery win when you need it?! :)

I also want to look into getting a swish- not sure of size or finish yet but I have briefly played on a 20” traditional finish one that sounded great, but the next time I went into the shop it had gone.

What are you considering in terms of the second pair of hats? I’d recomend some Zildjian trash hats. I’ve got a pair and they sound cool! Only problem is that with an earplug in they dont seem to have enough sustain and can sound a bit dead- leading to some overplaying at gigs. In reality though, they seem to cut through anything and make a cool and distinctive ride sound if opened a touch and used instead of the ride itself. Anyway, thats just my thought eh? :D

Oh and don’t think I’m rich with that second bass drum- almost my entire kit is owned by the student loans company! :D

Cheers!

I’m looking in to installing a pair of 13 inch a custom projection high hats to be located on my right hand side so i could play open handed.

I might even consider replacing my mastersounds with 14 inch projection high hats also. I really love the projection a customs, their really loud, and verry good for having that washy sound when you do cymbal runs. But i had to have standard splashes and chinas because they don’t do them in projection, although i like the short sound you can get from the splashes.

Fordonian wrote:

Yeah- I want to get the trash hats out on the right between the china and the ride. However a remote eliminator pedal will cost me about £230, so not just yet. As much as playing open handed I want to group my other ride sounds together- ride, china, extra hats and the rock crash for some noisey crash riding! I’ll also put the swish over there when I finally get it.

I haven’t actually got any projection stuff myself but a mate has a 17” projection crash and says its the best cymbal hes ever played and heard. Personally I’m trying to avoid buying all Z Customs and looking like the guy from Creed! ergh!

Have you (or anyone for that matter) seen or tried those titanium Zildjians yet? I haven’t even seen one myself but I’m quite interested in hearing them or chatting to someone who has.

It doesn’t really matter what cymbals you get, be it all z customs, or z customs with an avedis cymbal in the set up it doesn’t matter what you use, you won’t be patrinised!

And if anyone does, just tell them to fuck off, your leed your own life in a way that i lead mine.

All my cymbals are a customs at the moment, but the orientle cymbal and the zelbell cymbal will be the only none a customs in my set up. When i tell my friends how many drums and cymbals i have, i blow them away!

People can be omazed by how much equipment you’ve got.

I don’t mind what cymbals I’m getting- if i like the characterists of it, I’ll by it- but Zildjian only- I’m biased but I know I shouldn’t be! :0

I just don’t want all Z Customs because it kind of narrows down what I can play style wise and the variety in tone- I prefer to get a broad spread so I’ll probably wind up covering most of the ranges and mess with putting rivets in some and other silly things! :) Oh, if I had the money, or an endorsement (yeah right!) :D

I know what you mean about people being impressed by gear! Its so funny! My band knows a few local bands that think they’re rockstars and when they ramble about their gear we always bring ours up- much better and more of it :)

I know you like stands, but how about going for a Drum rack? If you like Pearl hardware, then Pearl do drum racks. They are very usefull, they don’t take up as much space, and you can have 3 layers of cymbals, and as many cymbal arms that you can get on before the rack colapses.

Note, In order that the rack would be more stable, Attach it to your bass drums, they would be more secure then

Fordonian wrote:

That is actually a very good idea. I’ve not really considered a rack before for more than a day and theres no reason why. The only thing that may be a problem would be the diameter of the posts that Yamaha use for the YESS mountings fitting with the Pearl stuff.

At the moment my 10” and 12” toms are mounted on a Yamaha tri-holder but the tri-holder itself is mounted in an old Premier stand because the Pearl ones wont take it- too small if I remember correctly. Hmmm…

Actually, the YESS arm for the 14” is held to the cybmal stand with a Pearl AX-20 (I think, could be wrong) clamp. This could well work!

Right! I’m going to go and email a guy at Pearl, download the latest Pearl hardware catalogue and then do my research without leaving the house because my head is far too hungover!

Cheers man- an inspired suggestion! :D

It doesn’t matter whether your tom holder is a Premier or not, The rack clamp would still secure it.

And if the diameter of the 2 back poasts could only contain 1 bass drum, then buy a couple more rack arms, so the whole rack can accommidate both bass drums.
