Speed Cameras

#

Started by Citizen Erased

The UK government is supposed to be publishing a thingy showing how speed cameras save lives, but its a fair bet that there’ll be much whinging about how they’re only there to raise money.

My understanding is that they only fine you if you’re breaking the law, which doesn’t seem particularly unreasonable. If you don’t want to be caught STOP SPEEDING YOU MORON! Which is pretty much what I did after I was done for £100 and 3 points a couple of years ago.

Anyone any thoughts? Most people that speed seem to be cocky boy racer types in really crappy old cars or 30-50 year olds in BMWs and Mercs who seem to think that they’re above the law (you can often hear someone say ‘look at that cunt’ when one goes past. Well, you can in my car anyway). Alomst exclusively they’re male as well.

Amen to that, I have no sympathy with people who incur fines for speeding. It’s very easy to just, well, not.

I dont condone(sp) speeding, but it was a mates new car and we were just having a bit of fun, coz no-one else was around.I enjoy going fast, but I absolutely hate the boy racer scene.you know, happy hardcore blaring out of a crappy stereo, and five people crammed in the back jeering at anyone that goes past.

“This speed is what I need to help me kill some time

I’m the driver
I’m in control

Need to drive, I feel good
Need to drive, I’m alive
(Accelerate) Need to drive, (Accelerate) so alive
(Accelerate) Need to drive, (Accelerate) feel alive “

Well, when someone else IS around, you probably wouldn’t notice until you’d run them down. It’s just stupid and pointless, I hate it.

It’s exactly the same in Germany.

In london it seems they don’t care. My aunty got caught on one and they sent her a fine and she paid that but they also asked her to send her license so they could put the points on the license, she didn’tand they never said anything again.

well i got once caught for”racing” too by one of those lovely cameras…i was driving 40 in a 30 km/h zone :D…yeah i’m bad :)

135mph to outrun a camera? I remember the test they did on Top Gear and they said it was more like the 170mph mark. Haha! Found it;

Sure the camera just wasn’t loaded or something? I entered a competetion to win a TVR Tuscan once, I didn’t win :( Even if I did I doubt I’d get insured until I was 25- it’d look cool on the drive though! :)

On the racer front- I hate them all! Scum in old knackered civics, escorts, corsas and the occaisonaly very old BMW. Blacked out windows and big exhausts and a “System yo!” thats worth more than the shit-heap its put in, just so they can irritate you from an even greater distance. Its just a shame someone has to clean up once they kill themselves and usually, others too.

Speaking of which, I’ve got to go and get a new tyre today after driving over scal wreckage yesterday in Eccles. Nothing had been done about clearing the road so there was no choice. This is the second in 11 months at £80 a time…grumble…complain…moan…whinge! Sorry I’ll stop now :)

Hah, I know what you mean. ” I can do 100, but it’s okay because I’m a safe driver” Yeah right, if you were a safe driver you wouldn’t be doing a 100!

It is very silly. You also get people flashing you to warn you of cameras coming up. Stupid.

I’m going against the grain a little here…

I’m all for speed cameras outside schools and residential area’s where children are crossing, or for instance, on motorways where there are people working close to the road etc…

But (and here’s the but!) There is no element of discretion here - driving at 35 in a 30 zone at 3:30 in the morning on a well lit dual carriageway? would the police issue a ticket? - NO
would a camera? - YES

You are taking the human element out of upholding the law! And I think this is wrong!

Plus I totally disagree with the speed limits that we have on the motorways - they are not relevant to modern driving - the 70mph was introduced years ago - and the technological advances in cars these days mean that travelling along a motorway at 90mph is not particularly dangerous (in my opinion)

And just to make clear - I am not just pissed off because I have been caught speeding - Because I have not - I consider myself a safe driver and I feel I drive at an apropriate speed.

Let the backlash start!

How about if a camera clocked you and then a human decided on the seriousness of your speedyness, taking into account factors such as actual speed, time of day, type of area etc and then awarded the penalty dependant on that?

But that is not what happenes - this is almost an automated response - a camera catches you, a request is made from the DVLA, an envelope is sent to your house - there is little or no descision making other than when the camera is calibrated at what speed it will trigger to catch you…

A lot of these cameras are placed to make money - fact.

One example of this is near me where a road, as long as i can remember, has been a 40mph zone - one day speed cameras went up and the limit was reduced to 30mph… there is no obligation for any authority to re-signpost that the speedlimit has been reduced. If the 40mph signs are simply removed then the speed limit has been legally altered.

People continued to travel down this road at 40mph as they always had (this is a wide main road in a non residential area). Until the speed camera flashed everyone that went through!

Eventually the local press covered the incident enough that the council had to put signs up informing people of the reduced speed limit - not before these cameras had fleeced loads of people £60 and 3 points a go!

I agree it’s stupid not to resignpost limits that have changed, mind.

Having been in a motorway pile up where a handful of people were killed (I wasn’t driving btw), I can honestly say that that attitude can cost lives. Here’s a tip - leave a few minutes earlier

deadsetgav wrote:

So did I, until I crashed (not the occasion above, another time with no other vehicles involved). At least I got the chance to re-evaluate things…

Having worked in a job that meant doing over 500 miles a week - I can safely say that on every motorway in the UK there are thousands of drivers every day that drive over 70 mph safely…

There are always going to be accidents and sure - i’m not stupid enough to think that speed is not sometimes a determining factor - but many of the accidents that happen would occur regardless of if the car was traveling at 70 or 90 mph

I wasn’t suggesting that everyone should drive like a beserker… but there is a very large middle ground that most of the UK seems to drive in. Plus - In Germany where there are no restrictions on speed the roads are statisically no more dangerous than here.

I’m sure if I had been in a situation like Citizen - i would probably feel different.

When I made the statement about driving at what I thought was an appropriate speed - i was not saying i tear round town at 50mph cause i can ‘handle’ a car - i simply meant driving at a sensible speed without constantly watching the speedo on the car…

No - cause a picture of a car passing some white lines does not give any indication as to the conditions at the time…
