bad karma: that situation sounds very similar to my own. i had never really listened to depeche mode until i heard “barrel of a gun” and subsequently bought Ultra. and, the same as you, have slowly been getting more and more albums. i do think that the early ones are a bit hit and miss but “Violator” and “Songs of Faith and Devotion” are both masterpieces. For a good DVD of their’s go for “one Night in Paris” which was filmed on the “Exciter” tour.

hehe,it was quite similar with me - although i liked enjoy the silence from the moment i first saw it on TV in ‘90 or so.
then,my dad bought “songs of faith and devotion” a few years later and i HATED it.
after “barrel of a gun” was released, i changed my mind tho.and when ‘it’s no good’ came out i was converted :D
i don’t have all the albums yet but i’m getting there.my fave studio album until now is “black celebration”.
“101” wins without competition.

101 the live album is currently available in most fopp record stores (in the UK) for £5. i recommend that you all buy it. but under no circumstances buy the 101 dvd as it sounds like shit and is very, very incomplete.

@romy, black celebration is a good album but compared to songs of faith and devotion it is pant’s. sorry, just my opinion, i must stop expressing such things.

don’t get me wrong,i’ve grown to love songs of faith and devotion,it’s just that black celebration is my fave,i couldn’t even explain why, but it is. each to their own,i’d say :)

i have the 101 film on video,it was shown on TV some months ago. it’s nothing special, but nice to watch nevertheless.

I got into DM through the Ultra album too lol. I never really liked their old stuff (“I Just Can’t Get Enough” and the like), but when I heard “Barrel Of A Gun”, I thought it was fucking brilliant. Been collecting all of their old albums. Violator is definitely my fav.

For the most part I liked what I’d heard before Ultra but it wasn’t wasn’t a great deal- just odd singles here and there. Then seemingly like everyone else I got into them when Ultra came out and I heard “It’s no good”. I’ve also slowly been building up albums but I still really love Ultra more than the rest.

My dad also started getting into them more and more by hearing me playing stuff and it ended up with me taking him to see them in Manchester for his birthday, awwww… :)

Child of the Eighties, it was nearly impossible to not like Depeche Mode. I can’t count how often the Black Celebration album rotated on my record-player. And A Question Of Time still is one of my eighties favorites.

Count me in! Depeche Mode are great, I hope they will release an other album, but I think they will because Martin Gore and Dave gahan have a sort of love/hate relationship and “Depeche Mode” is where they will meet again!I don’t have a fvaourite album, but the 101 live album is one of the best for sure!

Wow i don’t know why but i thought i would be the only Depeche Mode fan here, theres a sale on in Virgin at the min and most of their back catalogue is priced at £4.99 each.I reccomend Violator or Songs Of Faith And Devotion as a good buy.
I bought Construction Time,Speak And Spell,A Broken Frame and Music For The Masses i’m still have a few gaps in my collection i just need People Are People,Some Great Reward and Black Celebration and then i have all their studio albums.
Before i bought Ultra i only knew a few songs like Just Can’t Get Enough,Enjoy The Silence and Personal Jesus then i heard Barrel Of A Gun,Home and Its No Good and after that i was hooked.
I bought Dave Gahan’s solo album Paper Monsters a few months ago,its a good album anyone else heard it?

Quote (author unknown):

Depeche Mode plan new album

Depeche Mode plan to begin work in January on their first album since 2001’s Exciter.

Martin Gore, Dave Gahan and Andrew Fletcher will meet next month in Santa Barbara, Calfornia, with Mute Records chief Daniel Miller, their manager Jonathan Kessler and producer Ben Hiller to discuss plans for the album.

Last year frontman Gahan released his debut solo album, Paper Monsters, and threatened to leave the band unless Depeche Mode’s songwriter guitarist-keyboard player Gore was willing to involve him more in songwriting.

He told German magazine Spiegel, “Martin sometimes even told me how to sing certain passages. I often felt like an instrument being used by others.”

Since their breakthrough hit in 1981 with New Life, Depeche Mode have become one of Britain’s most successful rock exports playing arenas wouldwide in support of best selling albums like Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion.

Co-founder keyboard player Vince Clarke quit in 1981 to form Yazoo. His replacement Alan Wilder left the band in 1995.

It is? I think DM are well past their sell-by date to be honest, Exciter I thought was shite. They were a much better band when Gahan was a smackhead.

I moved to Barcelona a few years back and in the first week I was here Depeche Mode played. Great gig, one of the main reasons I went to see them though was, as you pointed out, they never play Ireland. I reckon they’d fill the Point Depot.
