Hi all! I wonder how you guys got into Therapy?, here’s my story, don’t know if you’re interested. Enjoy!
It was in ‘94 (I was 13) that I first saw Therapy? on MTV Europe, it was Nowhere. Shortly after this, I heard Die Laughing. Back then, I was still into music like 2 Unlimited and Ace Of Base and stuff (I know, I was stupid…), so I never listened to any hard rock. This continued for some years, then they suddenly hit the top 10 of the Dutch charts with Diane. This was during the Happy Hardcore days, which I also liked (I know, stupid me again…). Of course, I remembered T? from Nowhere and Die Laughing, but I never looked for a T? album. A couple of years later, somewhere in ‘98, I started to get more and more interested in rock music, first I listened to Nirvana (Nevermind, still love that one!), and some Metallica stuff (started with One, great classic, always loved this song, even in my Euro-trash-pop days…). After that, I started to look for more rock music, I then I remembered Therapy? I got the album Troublegum, and immediately listened to Nowhere and Die Laughing. Aah, the sound of recognition! This was what rock should be like! I didn’t stop listening to that album for weeks. After that, I went looking for more T? albums, first Infernal Love. At first, I didn’t really like this album, but this album has grown to me, I listened to it quite a lot before I really discovered the brilliance of some songs, like Jude The Obscene, and A Moment Of Clarity. Then I got Born In A Crash, my favs on that album being Opal Mantra and Innocent X (live). The next album I listened to was Nurse. At first, I didn’t liked it, so I tried Semi-Detached, which was pretty much love at first hearing… I guess it’s my favourite album, with great songs like Lonely, Cryin’ Only, Straight Life, Church Of Noise. I decided to give Nurse another shot, and surprise surprise, I liked it all of a sudden! But then I figured: hey, since I have already those albums, I might as well get the early ones to! I saw Caucasian Psychosis somewhere in a small record shop (where they have some rare bootlegs and stuff), for only 30 guilders. The sound of this album isn’t perfect, but there are some great songs on it, like Punishment Kiss, Innocent X, and Potato Junkie. Of course I immediately bought Suicide Pact after its release, but I really disliked the album in the beginning, it just didn’t fit well into T?’s other stuff for me. After a while though, I started to listen to it more often, and now I actually quite like it, Little Tongues First being my fav on this one. So then I had all the official albums (except So Much For The Ten Year Plan), so I started to look for some b-sides and live stuff. Now, I made two albums with B-sides, about all of them are on it, and a self-made live album, with songs from different festivals and gigs. Last October, I visited my first T? concert, which was great. This will certainly not be my last concert, that’s for sure.
I know I still have a lot of catching up to do with some of you, but I turned out to be a T? fan, just like every single one of you did. Now, when I’m in a bar or something, I sometimes wear my T? shirt, with the band on it. Some people are looking at it, and you see them frown, but some also recognise Therapy?, which is pretty nice too! But I actually don’t mind that many people don’t know Therapy?, it’s just my own style, which makes me quite unique, at least in my surroundings, since I never met any real T? fan before around here. Now, the search for live bootlegs continues, and some other T? stuff too. I purchased a T? poster via E-bay (which unfortunately hasn’t arrived yet), a hooded sweater and a shirt at the 013 concert, and a badge for my bag or something.
This is about it. Was this a great story or what? To be continued? Yeah, of course, what did you think? But now I would like to know how you guys got into Therapy?
