On Andy’s request: your favourite Beatles album?

#

Started by Superunknown

I didn’t post this in the “other artists” section since Andy mentioned it in his latest diary entry.

So what’s your favourite Beatles album (not counting compilations)? Personally I think they’ve never made a bad record and they sure deserve their reputation as one of the best (if not the best) rock band ever.
My Top 5:

1. The Beatles (White Album)… I don’t know why many people think this should have been a single album only. Every song is great (except for Ringo’s maybe) and the variety of styles is amazing. “Helter Skelter” was like 30 years ahead of its time.

2. Abbey Road… A very close second with some of my very favourite Beatles songs (“Here Comes The Sun”, “Something” and the amazing medley on side B). A great farewell album. Nobody ever called it quits like this.

3. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonley Heart’s Club Band… A great concept album with a few weak spots (“Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite”, “Good Morning Good Morning”)

4. Rubber Soul… “Revolver“‘s musical twin. Some songs didn’t age too well but others are completely timeless (“In My Life”, “Michelle”, “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown”)

5. Revolver… I always thought this one was overrated. Maybe it was revolutionary at the time but IMO it pales in comparison to “Abbey Road” & “The White Album”. Sure, there are great songs here (“Eleanor Rigby” being the most memorable), but there is a bunch of forgettable ones (“Dr. Robert”, “Love You To”).

I really love Ringo’s drums on the title track’s reprise version)

2. Abbey Road
If I could write a song I wish that I’d written “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” because it is a classic in everyway!

3. Magical Mystery Tour
Another classic “I Am The Walrus” is on this.

Can’t make top 5 since those are all the Beatles records I have. I was more into The Rolling Stones because they were far more dangerous and bluesy… :p

1. revolver - i wish i could explain why this is my fav. but i can’t… it just is…
2. abbey road - the best farewell album in the history of music…
3. white album - some of the greatest beatles songs ever, and some that should have been left out… would have made the best single album ever…
4. let it be… naked - the mixes on this album are just amazing… i hated the original, with it’s strings and shit… this is how it should have always sounded…
5. sgt. pepper - the whole is stronger then the sum of it’s parts… some songs are really great, others only work if you listen to the entire album at once…

Have moved it, since no one’s talking about the diary ;)

I really don’t like The Beatles. And before I get the familiar backlash, yes I understand how they changed the face of music forever blah blah but they’re still just so…average.

i have never really sat down and listened to a beatles album in it’s entirety. this may be due to my age, or it may just be because i think they are rather over-rated. as an influence i can see how they changed a lot of things with regard to music and i respect them a lot for what they have done but i wouldn’t consider myself a fan. perhaps i should give them a “proper” listen, but having said that, they don’t really interest me that much.

I have enormous respect for them and how much they did for music (more than a lot of people realise, even), but I have to say I don’t find a lot of their music in my CD player very often. I’m really into the late 60s psychedelic movement, but I don’t class The Beatles as one of my favourite bands of the time. I simply don’t like a lot of their songs. Anyway:

1. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Yeah, a lot of people say it’s more important than good, and quite a few people say it’s a long way from their best album, but it has my favourite production on and I simply like all the songs apart from Good Morning, Good Morning.

2. Revolver
Wonderful pop album with some excellent psychedelic moments in it. Has that kind of mature pop thing that I like best from them, really.

3. Magical Mystery Tour
More of a collection than an album, I really like this one too… very psychedelic and some great songs, although a few I’m not so keen on.

4. Rubber Soul
Their best early pop era stuff, with some absolute gems in there (In My Life is phenominal), but a bit cheesy and annoying in places.

Then there’s Abbey Road, White Album, Let It Be and all the early stuff which I only like a bit from really. The four albums above I do really like, the rest I find patchy.
