Rip off seller on ebay?

#

Started by Billy Blue

Am I wrong or is this guy trying to rip people off?

This is the bootleg of HAMFC and therefore was not given away at the gig as stated in the description. Maybe he doesn’t even have the vinyl?

I was under the impression that it was rare, only 1000 made. I’m pretty sure that it was never a bootleg and only as described in the description - I’m sure I’ve seen these go for as much as £45.

I have two versions of this single. One is on A&M and has Gemil on the front cover. The second version doesn’t mention A&M and just has a catalogue number SC09. The second version has a picture of Michael on the front cover and the Gemil picture is on the reverse.

I believe the first version is the one that was actually given out at the Dublin and Belfast gigs and the second version is a bootleg. I wasn’t at either gig as I was working as a barman at the time to finance my studies and bar staff do not get time off at Christmas in Ireland :(. I did pick up the single (A&M version) in a second-hand shop in Dublin a short time afterwards. The version advertised on eBay appears to be the bootleg version. The only weird thing is that the seller claims he got this version at the gig. He is also selling a T-shirt from the same gig in a separate auction which makes it look like he really was at the gig. Maybe both versions were pressed by T? or maybe this guy is just trying to pull a fast one?

The description is clear. This is the bootleg version. Well I think that the original A&M version was actually given in the venue. Some bootlegs were given outside. Even the pic is of the bootleg’s one. I don’t think the guy is trying to rip anyone off. He has the edition number in the auction and a trully T? fan should know what he is bidding on … Simple as that … ;) I have seen the bootleg version going up to 40 Euros at auctions … I don’t know if people know it is not the real stuff which usually goes for at least 90 Euros…

I emailed the guy the following…

“From your description of this item and the picture featured it is clear that this is not one of the original 1000 7”s of HAMFX from the December 92 shows; I would recommend that you amend your listing accordingly.

There is a bootleg version of this single with a picture of Michael on the cover.

Users of Therapy?’s official website are aware that your item is not an original but since there’s no guarantee that your buyer knows, you may end up with a complaint to eBay on your hands…”

Am sure if he genuinely didn’t know it’s a bootleg, he’ll change the listing or cancel the auction…:)

Well the thing is that if you are not a FAN then you can easily be fooled. The records ( i also got both ) both say limited edition 1000 and one side of the cover is ALMOST the same …

I think it is possible to be a fan and not check this site, I wouldn’t have known the difference if i didn’t come on here and have it explained.

With only a 1000 copies in circulation - not many people will have seen the original to differentiate between the two - I had this on my watch list and would probably have believed it was genuine based on the description.

A reply:

Hi Sarah

Sorry for the confusion…but this is the origional single I got in Dublins SFX in ‘92…the confusion arrises because I took the pic and description from a previous sellers auction.

I will ammend description accordingly immediately but rest assured this is an origional one of the 1000 only.

best wishes

B.

hooch: i think your insistence of it not being a genuine copy must have worked as if you now look at the e-bay link posted earlier it says: “The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing.”

Looks like it is the original A&M vinyl. He’s relisted it with the correct picture.

Yeah, he emailed again and apologised, said he was gonna relist it - just plain laziness stealing someone else’s listing, especially if it’s not even for the same thing, lol

Well, good luck bidders! :D

Somebody has just paid fifty Euro for what looks to be the bootleg version (Cat. No. SC09).

I realise the auction has ended, but check this out:

You asked:
“Does the cover show Gemil (triangle head thing) in a santa hat, or bass player Micheal McKeegan? Also, is the writing in block letters or script? Thanks.”

cover picture shows bassist (triangle thingy in santa hat on reverse) - all writing on sleeve is block capitals (record has a mix) - hope this helps…

4047299875 THERAPY - HAVE A MERRY XMAS (LTD ED. 1992 GIG 7”) 02-Nov-04

It was the bootleg, and even if this isn’t the same auction you’re all talking about, it was being advertised as an origional. It went for about £40.

The one auctioned was definitely the bootleg.

The official A&M 7” has an official A&M headed letter explaining that it was limited to 1000 copies and only available at the Dublin and Belfast gigs.

I don’t know if this letter was with every 7” given out, but it’s in the sleeve of my copy.
