Top Ten Rock Albums.

#

Started by Misanthropologist (d)

If you had to list ten all-time classic rock albums (classic not just necessarily because you like them, but because they should be recognised as such), what would you include? I have a friend who is moving away from the shaky and slightly creepy world of hip-hop and erm, folk (probably) into a better place(tm), and she wants to know what the ten indispensable albums are. And I’m crap at answering stuff likethat, so I thought I’d ask you guys! :)

It’s pretty vague, I know, but I guess there should be some sort of diversity there, to cover a wide spectrum. *shrugs*

Suggestions?

Wow - where do you start?

I think my personal top ten would have:

Therapy? - Troublegum
Faith No More - Angel Dust
Nirvana - Bleach
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Black Sabbath - Vol 4
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Alice In Chains - Dirt
Tool - Aenema
Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley

and depending on my mood of a day any of the following could also make it

RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream, - Strapping Young Lad - City, Ministry - Psalm 69, Carcass - Heartwork, Helmet - Betty, Pearl Jam - Ten, STP - Purple, Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction…

shit - i bet thats no use at all!

Heh, no, there’s some good suggestions there. It’s so hard picking them, I know. I keep giving up after about five (The same T? Nirvana, NIN, & GNR that you listed, um, and I think something you didn’t list, but I can’t think what it is, now… gah! YOu’re supposed to be giving me ideas, not making me lose ones I already had! :p)

Wow, this is a hard one. When it comes to classic classic rock, I can’t say too much about Jimi Hendrix or Deep Purple stuff, but since everyone here used rock as just guitar music…

1. Therapy? - Troublegum
2. Alice Cooper - Killer / Hey Stoopid
3. Metallica - Black Album
4. RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
5. WASP - Crimson Idol
6. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
7. Faith No More - Angel Dust
8. Rolling Stones - Greatest Hits (every collection including Beast Of Burden and Paint It Black)

and everything by STRANGE FRUIT! :D

God, and a fuckin’ lot more. Can’t think of ten albums now.

Iron Maiden’s debut has got to be in there somewhere! Led Zep too.

Um - Some others that I can think of that wouldn’t make the top ten but would be damn close:

Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E
Pantera - Vulgur Display Of Power
Deftones - Adrenaline
Offspring - Smash
White Zombie - Astro Creep 2000
Monster Magnet - Dopes To Infinity
Paradise Lost - Draconian Times
Fear Factory - Demanufacture
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses
Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar
Rage Against The Machine - RATM
Wildhearts - Earth Vs

Were the 90’s a better era of music or is it nostalgia? I listen to some of the stuff now and as much as I love it - it never seems to hold up compared to stuff like the above…

Strange enough, you’ve spoken much more often about my birthday than I did. Why not say “Happy birthday”, and be over it? ;)

No. Can’t agree. Good things can’t be mentioned often enough. (Otherwise a T? message board would be unneccessary, and I think this would be a pity ;) )

not that i necessarily like all the above but i guess these are the best to make someone like rock music.

OH!, so now you want me to wish you a happy birthday when it isn’t even your birthday anymore! Birthday birthday birthday, that’s all I hear. :D

But you’re right, good things should be talked about.

p.s. another good list, Trigger.

No, not anymore. Even if you’d be on your knees begging to accept your wishes and congratulations. No way.

@ trigger
Not so sure if Radiohead would be the best way to convince someone to like rock music. It’s more for the more experienced ears I think. But good list anyway.

Nice try, but there;s no way you’re going to get me to go down on my knees (sort of like this) and BEG you to PLEASE accept my fondest wishes and congratulations.

What?! Gah! Foiled again!!! ;)

By the way everybody, I’ll be passing on these lists in a week or so, so there’s still time to get your ‘vote’ in. :)

Well, I’m going to be the first to dispute this by saying I don’t think rock is any ‘better’ than hip-hop or folk.

Anyway…
The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Joy Division - Closer
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
Therapy? - Semi-Detached

Pixies - Doolittle
Primus - Frizzlefry
Whipping Boy - Heartworm

Like I said, if I were to do this tomorrow it’d likely contain 10 entirely different albums including the likes of Metallica, Anthrax, Sonic Youth, Iggy Pop, Bob Mould etc…
