Scopophobia Regional Coding

#

Started by Shuff

Ok, so I bought the Scopophobia DVD today. That’s great, the only problem is that I live in Canada. Does anyone know if it’s possible for me to play the DVD in Canada?

Any help would be great. I’ve searched the net, but can’t understand all the technical stuff.

Thanks

Title: Region

Its not coded for US/CAN players best to my knowledge. You need a player that ignores region codes. I haven’t gotten it for this reason.

My copy of Scopophobia says it’s Region 0 (i.e. not coded to any particular region). Which should mean it will play on any player (standalone or PC) in any region. However, the video signal is encoded in PAL (the standard used in Europe) and not NTSC (the standard used in North America). PC’s shouldn’t have a problem with this, but if you’re playing it on a standalone DVD player, your TV will need to be able to display PAL signals. The manual for your TV may (or may not) tell you whether it can do this. Although, the best way to determine this, is to stick the DVD in the player, press play and see what happens… :)

Just writing to let North Americans know that cdzone.co.uk has March 22 as a release date for Scopophobia in Region 1. It’s listed at just under £14.

If this is true, I wish I hadn’t bought my Region 2 version now.

Title: DVD Region Question (merged)

I assume the Therapy DVD is Pal, but what I need to know about is the regional coding. Could some hardcore Therapy fan check their back of their DVD and see if it has a little globe with a 2 in the middle of it? Does anybody know the regional coding on it?
Cheers

I have a 3 or 4 year old Sony DVP-S335 DVD Player and it can play both NTSC and PAL DVD’s with colours.
I don’t know do you have the same thing with your players as we have here and you should try to check that the your player really plays PAL colour system before you buy PAL DVD…
I used to have “thin” scart-cable and that showed NTSC disks only in black&white, when I changed that to “full”/”thicker” cable I could see all the colours.

My only problem is that the player plays only region 0 & 2 DVD’s, I would have love to buy “Weird Al” Yankovic’s DVD if the region would have been 0 or 2 instead of 1. Those region-codes are really stupid!

Region codes fucking suck! But Scopophobia does not work on my NTSC DVD player… It’s easy to go around on a computer DVD-ROM however. Also, many of the cheap DVD players available at Future Shop and Best Buy are region-free. Just look at the Nova and Daytek brands. They aren’t recognized names, but they play everything. Even wma, wmv, mpeg, jpeg, DVD-/+…

Also I was able to find a cheap ($50) DVD player which has a PAL to NTSC converter built in, which works good to.

As far as I’m aware usa is region one and as the Therapy? DVD is a music DVD and not film then it doesn’t need a region coz it’s only the film industry which is all pissie about regions but it will be PAL instead of NTSC so as long as your TV’s OK with PAL (most tv are these days) then it should be fine. Don’t hold me to this but i’m quite sure that it’s the way it works.

Oh yeah your region 1 by the way!

Title: Disregard previous reply

Scopophobia will not work on regular North American DVD players. Therapy?’s DVD is a PAL DVD, and so will not work on regular North American NTSC systems. It is regionally encoded. However, some DVD players in North America don’t have regional encoding, and the DVD will work on those players. If you have a region 0 player, then you’re in luck. It’s mostly the cheap DVD players that don’t have regional encoding.

You should be able to flash the software on your home DVD player (called firmware) to make it region free.

Try searching the web for ‘upgrading firmware’ then the manufacturer of your DVD player.

Careful! Regional coding is not the same as the difference between NTSC and PAL e.g. Sex In The City Series 1 is freely available in the UK as a Region 2 DVD,HOWEVER it is NTSC not PAL and will only play in black and white on some TVs. Regional coding is not about catering for different (existing) TV standards, it is purely and simply about controlling where in the world certain titles can be viewed at any given time.

I live in the states and I just ordered it from Amazon UK. You might be able to find region 0 DVD players at some stores, I know that there are some available at stores like Circuit City (at least when I asked them, they said yes). The way that I got around that stuff was just playing it on my laptop. I understand that might not be a perfect solution for you, but it works.

Good luck!

The only issue is the picture for some of the PAL discs can tend to skip a little if there is real quick movement on screen. But what do you expect for $40? With Scopophobia it isn’t bad.

The DVD isn’t region encoded, it region 0 (i.e. worldwide) but it is PAL. I know this has been said already but this post I’m quoting seemed to come afterwards (unless hooch is messing with my head on these merged threads :))

Title: UK USA PAL NTSC

In sympathy for our US brothers and sisters, I wish UK bands with a global fanbase would start to release their DVDs as region 0, NTSC encoded discs.

This is because while 90% of modern TVs in the UK (and I think Europe) can easily display NTSC images, in the US hardly any TVs seem to be able to display PAL - probably because there’s generally little need for it.

In order to get around this, you have to buy a special DVD player with a converter, as we’ve seen from this thread. It’s cool you can get them so cheaply now though.

Alternatively, the SubPop Video Network DVD I bought recently is a double sided region 0 disc - one side is PAL, the other NTSC. The drawback here is that it’s probably expensive to produce these discs, and you can’t have any artwork on them…
