Cable: get the Down-Lift The Up-Trodden album, it’s absolutely brilliant, very Pavement-like.

yes, they are unreleased Cable tracks - sublingual era demos… some of them were due to be b-sides on the never released Honolulu single.

Gorilla album - yes, enough tracks for one were recorded

maybe the tracks i mentioned are early versions of what could of been recorded for honaulu?? sorry about the spelling.

i also got copies of the four radio 1 peel sessions and the reading 95 set that was featured on peels show. so there is rare stuff out there.

with regards to the gorilla album. i remember they had a feature in metal hammer around 97 when they released outside i think. anyway it said in the article they where currently recording an album. If they did they must have recorded ‘Superstar’ cos that track was a gem…and i need it!

theres a radio session they did in derby to with 3 tracks that wern’t on any ep.

indeed they did. got that on an old cd up in the attic. must get up there soon and dig that out, now you’ve mentioned it. great track.

There’s the ‘Manic Sound Panic’ EP too. Managed to pick up a mint condition copy of that in London last year! Hadn’t heard of the No Excuse single before, what’s it like?

yeah, but i’ve only got that on 12” (wasn’t on cd), so i’ve not got it ripped. last year? i bought mine at the time :p

No Excuse rules. Neil’s bass drums are working overtime and there’s an awesome jazz break in the middle. interesting note: Therapy? supported the band at the gig where the live tracks were recorded (and it was f*cking hot in there too)

I was only a poor lickle sixth-former back then, so I wasn’t buying many records or owt. Funnily enough, I got into T? and The Beyond around the same time and in the same way - by someone else in the sixth form common room passing me a tape and saying “you might like this…”

Ah, so it’s another early one, then?

BTW, saw the name Gorilla in a listing for the Underworld in Camden and thought they’d reformed, but it turns out to be this bunch of imposters!

I think personally the best bands in rock in the last ten years are nirvana, pixies, failure, helmet, hum, kerbdog and cable. All have there cult status expect for cable. Maybe it’s there but it aint noticed outside derby. Being a derby decendent i’ll tell u we all still cream over the first album, but it ain’t enough, i think we need to try and get them to reform or something. they would be huge now. It’s weird derby is such a shithole but when it came to bands i was watching cable and gorilla within kicking distance so it was all good, shame u dont get that nowdays!

erm never heard em before to be honest, saw the pic on the main page. theres 3 ex stumble members in it right?? i was never into them didn’t like the arrogance of that ollie, i knew alot of people from woodlands who said he was a ****. Ain’t really into the indie thing either. I guess they made a good start though by not having him in the band. Unless hes had a facelift?? I don’t know…

Title:  The Beyond/Gorilla

Hiyas, yes, Im a newbie, and I found this forum after searching for the beyond & gorilla on google !!!

I was a HUGE Beyond and Gorilla fan back in the day, I cant believe Neil is now in Therapy !! I had no idea :D (if you read this neil, please email me)

The Beyond had 2 fabulous albums, “Crawl” and “Chasm”. Gorilla were just as good, apart from the haircuts ;) The day John Whitby cut those locks off was a sad day indeed… We used to get involved in foodfights with the band after gigs ! Ah, memories are flooding back

<I was a Therapy fan back in the day too, im sure they used to support The Beyond on tour>

that’s quite bizarre. i saw your board name and i instantly thought of… when i toured with The Beyond and had food fights after gigs at the Venue! :D those things were great, although the van always stank of dog food and treacle afterwards, ergh.

no idea what Whitby is up to, and you know what Neil’s up to. i’m currently working on a website for Jim & Andy’s latest band, Leon.

i had Manic Sound Panic on the other day, and texted them to say so. heh, they called me some great names :D

do any of Dunderfunk still make noise?

Id love to get in touch with the guys, or hear what theyre up to. You must let me know more about Leon ?

I moved to London in 1998, and then to Sheffield just 2 months ago, so Ive NO idea wht Dunderfunk are up to. They were fab too :D

Ooh im getting all nostalgic/excited ! <thanks for the welcome btw) :)

the funniest part, in my opinion, was when i’d turn around to go and get dressed backstage, and Neil would be pissing himself laughing, but have to play Sick, really seriously. :D

we always looked forward to playing up in Edinburgh. i think it was the biggest laugh of any tour. good stuff. :)

Didn’t Andy Gatford dye his hair in 2 parts once??? now that was dodgy!!

I just ripped a copy of the live session Gorilla did for radio Freedom in derby in 96 or 97??? on Mp3, including 3 non ep tracks, plus i finally got a copy of the live favourite ‘Superstar’ (at Last!!!!, studio version). I Need More!

If you ever see this Neil share that album you apparently recorded, the people of Derby need it!!!!!!!!!!

I need that albums worth of Gorilla stuff too !!!!

Were you at the accoustic gig they did at a pub in Derby ? Ive seen it on video - it looked fab ! They did some covers, including the *Prisoner Cell Block H* theme tune - hahahaha !

i think they did a few acoustic sets in derby, i went to one once at the Dolphin, it was pretty cramped in there, i was getting poked in the face by the guitars every minute or two… I remember them covering ‘Greenback’ (from Resivior Dogs) which suited Gorilla amazingly. I would love to hear that again. Can’t remember much more about the covers but i remember there where some pretty strange choices in there..
