The first thing that strikes me is that these songs are definetly growers. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, cos I remember getting into HA very much on the first listen and then losing interest quickly.

Pleasently surprised to see that it does sound very different from the last couple of albums - I wasn’t expecting that.

Good to hear Micheals bass really making a contribution again!

Not too sure about some of Andys vocals - sound a bit off key to anyone else?

Anyone else get an Opal Mantra vibe from the guitar on Rise Up?

Overal, sounds promising. Looking froward to the album.

I agree with everything you said. No, really.

1. It doesn`t sound as poppy as HA, but also not TOO raw (like Spyf)
2. More focus on the bass - great. Good demonstrated in “this ship is sinking
3. The vocals are not bad, but I feel they come of a bit generic. The whole structure of each song doesn`t sound very different for some reason to me.
3. Opal Mantra vibe in Rise up - yeah, I think so too. Not sure if this is because of the guitar.
4. The overall mood of “This ship is sinking” reminds me somewhat on the Trigger Inside B-Side Stuff.
5. Also very much remarkable: The drums! Superb work imho.

I’ve listened to them and I think I’ll wait for the album to come out so I can hear everything together.I’m digging the bass sound on these songs.Losing a second guitar and not wanting to overdub much or at all brings M. up to the front growling. As much as I like Neils playing on HA and I’m sure on this one,I still miss Grahems groove that he gave T?’s stuff when he was with them.

So I brought the tracks home and listened to them on proper speakers rather than cheap in-ear things… and I am much more swayed now!

I have seen comparisons with Trigger Inside b-sides, but to me, what these three songs make me thing of is:

…imagine So Much For The Ten Year Plan wasn’t a best of album, with two new tracks. Imagine it was a full new album, with two of the tracks being Bad Karma… and Fat Camp. It makes me think that these tracks would have fitted on that album, as if the band were in the same place when they recorded those two tracks and these new ones…

Which cheers me up no end, cos I love Fat Camp and Bad Karma…!

Yeah that’s exactly what I thought on first listen - reminded me a lot of Tatty Seaside Town and Nice and Sleazy. Which is great!

That wasn’t my comment (re Trigger Inside b-sides), that was someone else further up.

I should have been clearer in my post. I mean, I have seen others compare with T.I. b-sides… my comparison is with Bad Karma/Fat Camp…

Just to be clear.

So I put up the lyrics on the web page — can anyone fill in the blanks / make corrections?

Check the shape of your eyes, you’re taking too much
And loosen your smile, you’re pushing too hard
You’re lost for words, for what it’s worth
You use your gun, you get the fate you deserve

I try to heal these scars, I don’t need your help
[?] is choked, I get a swollen throat
So medicated, I’m not for sale
A tell-tale sign, [?], you…

Rise up, rise up, make yourself well
Rise up, rise up, make yourself well

[?] yourself away, step out of the trance
[?], watching others pass
I drag you away, [?]
[?], and learn to…

Rise up, rise up, make yourself well
Rise up, rise up, make yourself well
Rise up, rise up, make yourself well
Rise up, rise up, make yourself well

Check the shape of your eyes
Check the shape of your eyes
Check the shape of your eyes
Check the shape of your eyes

Rise up, rise up, make yourself well
Rise up, rise up, make yourself well
Rise up, rise up, make yourself well
Rise up, rise up, make yourself well
Rise up, rise up, rise up, rise up
Rise up, rise up, rise up, rise up

This ship is sinking, well, I’m gonna go with it
Straight to the bottom, I’ll push you back up
This ship is sinking, and it’s taking me with it
Straight to the bottom, where we belong

This ship is sinking, this ship is sinking
This ship is sinking, sinking

My heart is broken, and you did it
It took you five minutes, and I died in an instant
And now, I’m going straight to Hell
With a ship-wrecked mind, [?] all is well, yeah

This ship is sinking, this ship is sinking
This ship is sinking, sinking

Ah-ah
Ah-ah
Ah-ah
Ah-ah

The ocean’s wide, and you dropped me in it, now I need a bottle of wine to get me through this
And now I’m going straight to Hell, I’ll probably see you there

This ship is sinking, this ship is sinking
This ship is sinking, sinking

Ah-ah

Nice one, thanks! Had to look up the meaning of that one…

Just in case anyone else is interested:

Quote (author unknown):

tr.v. keel·hauled, keel·haul·ing, keel·hauls

1. Nautical. To discipline by dragging under the keel of a ship.
2. To rebuke harshly.

I don’t think you really have to subscribe to Real Player (but I don’t have the latest version, so I’m not sure about it).

You can just get the crappy cut down version for free on realplayer.com somewhere. Don’t do it though. The thing is like a veneral disease infecting your computer and giving it herpes and a bad case of pissing razors.

Someone leech it and post it.

…it has smthg to do with Nurse, I’d say, doesn’t it?

mmmmhhh

however, I have to listen to them again and again to have a proper opinion…

2nd verse to Rise Up:

time will heal these scars
i don’t need your help
the melody’s choked
stuck in a swollen throat
self-medicated and over-served
the tell-tale signs
you make your fate when you

You’ll just have to wait for the rest :p

Hope to not step into any ‘Fettnäpfchen’ here, but they do sound very rough. Is there still going to be any mastering done on them? Sound is a little rough and demo like.

It’s in real audio format of course they’ll sound rough. Nothing ruins cymbals, and any mixing in general like audio compression.

Hmm. Those tracks are… ok. I did like Rise Up, but though I like Joy Division, This Ship Is Sinking was a bit poo IMO. I dunno what I was expecting from the album, but while these tracks aren’t bad (and I’m also willing to allow for the shitness of Realplayer sound), I think if the other 10 were of this standard I’d be a bit disappointed with the album.

This is an opinion after one listen, mind! Still really looking forward to the album!
